Im warming up to this. i think 'ol noodle arm will give us the best chance to win and may be a better mentor to henne than josh ,who henne has arguably been outplaying.im kinda dissapointed as i was lookin forward to seeing some long bombs to ginn and pennington cant quite get it out there like the others ,but i have a feeling we will be seeing many henne to ginn bombs in the future.

 

Clearly I hate the Jets and everything about them. Coaches Owners, Staff and Players. CHAD as well.

But chads now a Dolphin, and we do not have some noodlehead upstairs making the decisions anymore so we have to trust the front office.

WE ARE not superbowl contenders this year! FACE IT UNDERSTAND THIS.

John beck and Josh have not impressed the coaching staff. Henne is WAY to ripe to plug in and ruin him. He will get his chances here and there and in 1/2 years will be the MAN. This front office will not rush him in.. So be patient.

Chad might not have the best arm strength as some other QB's but here is the point. Hes very smart, and a Leader.

Hes not going to just throw the ball up there and pary it gets caught. This offense is not build around that this year.

Our offense will be very west coast ish though its not a west coast offense.

Alot of RUNS, Sweeps, and short routes. We have inexperienced Wideouts as well.

Were going to be a RUN to setup the pass team. Two tight ends, HEAVY BLOCKING team this year with a few long tosses in there to keep em honest sort of...

Chad fits this perfect he knows coverages, he can make these throws, he can play smart and manage the offense without being asked to WIN the games.

If Ricky, Ronnie, and or TE's can move the ball dinking and dunking we will be ok. Im guessing about 17-21 points a game will be our average and our defense will probably give up about 17-21 points a game

Making this years games be very competative and if Chad can play smart he can help win some games. We are not looking at 10-6 season here guys
were a .500 team and it will be tough but we might be able to squeak out 7-9 to 9-7 season this year and that would be a HUGE turnaround for us..

Lets be realistic. If you want to win the superbol this year we can. You just have to spend 59.99 at Gamestop and grab a new copy of Madden.. Just make sure you get the PS3 version this year!

 

Good sound and realistic post. I do think Chad will enable us to stay in games more and more this year and when your in a game late anything can happen. With the conditioning these players have been through we will be much more competitive and have less defensive breakdowns then we had last year in the 4th QTR and we will win games this way. 8-8 would be a big big improvement and an extremely successfull season.

Man THANK YOU!..I do not like Pennington but as bad as it is..he gives us the best chance this year to be competitive...notice competitive and not playoffs or wildcards . Lets try to be as realistic as we can...we are rebuilding..and it is going to take some time. We are starting to get a nice foundation of younger talent but we are still a bit aways.

We need to take some baby steps first before we make leaps. We are coming off a 1-15 season...if we were to win 5-6 or 7 ganmes...that would be a HUGE step. Pennington solidifies what obviously was a glaring need to this front office. They believe witht the stability Chad will bring will make this team better down the road. Just my opinion.

 

The key is keeping him healthy.

He's been the starting QB since Week 4 2002 and has started an entire 16 game regular season schedule ONCE. He's been hurt for holding onto the ball too long, bad plays by the Offensive Line and scrambling for a first down. Do not think since Jake Long is in house that he'll be okay. This is Chad. He finds new fun ways to get hurt each season.

 

IS the guy healthy? I didn't think the he ever really recovered from that gosh awful looking arm/shoulder injury he suffered in preseason back 4-5 years ago - was it the Redskins? Can't remember.

 

So "the trifecta" was wrong about McCown but somehow Chad "I have no arm" Pennington is the answer? Bill Parcells knows only that he can trust some guys and not others. Obviously CP's a Parcells guy, that's not always a good thing, but what does he have left? Injuries and an eventual benching are the high note he left NY on.

This idea that he is some type of caretaker QB is misguided. Only once has he had a truly outstanding TD to INT ratio and that was in his first year as a starter. His last two seasons have seen 27 TDs and 25 INTs, impressive is it not?

What does he bring? Completions, assuming our guys stop dropping passes, but don't expect any 20 yard outs or deep posts. Leadership, he does have an aura around him even if his physical abilities are lacking. Great potential for injury, this could be Trent Green all over again.

I didn't like the Green or McCown signings and I don't like this one either.

 

You've got it all wrong, here's the list of Chad injurys:

- 2003 - Broken left wrist in Preseason vs Giants -- missed six regular season games, seven starts.

- 2004 - Tore his rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder @ Buffalo -- missed three games, passed up season ending surgery to come back for December (where the Jets went 1-3) and the playoffs (1-1).

- 2005 -- Tore his rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder AGAIN vs Jacksonville -- missed 13 games.

- 2006 - First ever healthy season. Yay Chad!!! 18 TD's, 17 INT's, 10-7 record (one playoff loss).

- 2007 - Tore two ligaments in his right ankle Week 1 vs New England -- missed Week 2 @ Baltimore came back and was never the same before being benched for Kellen Clemens after the eight game of the season.

Chad is 32-29 as a starter (Just regular season is that record I believe. You can add on a 2-3 postseason record if you'd like) but without games against Miami he is below .500.

 

Chad Pennington is twice the quarterback Josh McCown is. Had Pennington been available when they signed McCown, they wouldn't have signed McCown in the first place.

McCown was the best available QB to not give up anything. Now that Chad became available for nothing in return, they moved on it. It's smart business.

 

Yeah, I knew there was a rotator cuff or two in there and he hurried back from injuries, never allowing real recovery. Those are bad.

 

I agree Pennington is the best option for the short term as long as he doesn't hurt the development of our two young QBs (I'm assuming McCown is gone). I know Parcells loves to keep young talented QBs on the bench for old vets (Bledsoe/Romo) but I hope that doesn't happen here.

Yeah Pennington is the best short term chance for wins, IMO.

 

It will be interesting to see a lot of flip-flopping in the Dolphin world in the next few weeks. A week ago, Dolphin fans claimed the Jets had a "horrible QB situation" now they have the same and are happy.

Just strange.

Just for the record. Chad is a good QB and with the right weapons can win games. Is he a game changer, not really. Does he make your team more competitive? Yes and that is good. He will help your young QB core and might make my Dolphins 08 prediction go from 4 and under to around 6-7 games.

I am going to try to get down for Web Weekend this year. It is in November but I don't remember for which game. If it is for the Raiders game, I'll track you down and buy you a beer.

 

Pennington could really help us win an extra game or two, we are still rebuilding, so maybe we win 6-7 games instead of 4-5. BUT if we keep Beck and Henne, they get another year to develop and we have a better WR core, better OL and running game ready for when one of them takes the reigns in a year or two.

 

I'm still hoping that they provide as much protection as possible for Pennington to stay healthy as long as possible.

If they were to go out and sign LeCharles Bentley and Terry Glenn that would give the Dolphins' youth a couple of guys to look up to and overall a very solid offense. Most importantly however it would give Chad a full stack on the offensive line with something he hasn't had in his career. Runners as dominant as Ronnie and Ricky can be. Even Curtis Martin in his best years was not dominant. He could carry many times, but he couldn't do the stuff that Ricky and Ronnie can.

I think it'll be fine. I expect him to have a mid 80s QB rating and we'll be a 6-7 win team.

Yup, that sums it up. People (including Greg Cote) are over-analyzing this. Thanks to Brett Farve unexpectedly becoming a Jet, a QB upgrade (not a huge upgrade, but an upgrade) became available to the Dolphins, and the front office grabbed it. It doesn't turn us into a playoff team, but it makes us better. Why not do it?

Let's look at this... If Chad Pennington had such a terrible shoulder surgery and wasn't worth being in the league don't you think the Front Office would have noticed?

We are still on the fence for Terry Glenn because of an injury and haven't signed him while we give him time to recover.

Remember when we Signed Duante CulPepper? ..

Well there was a guy with a very similar shoulder surgery (Drew Brees) to Chad's that went on to sign on with New Orleans and throw for 4000+ yards..

Not saying Pennington will do it but the shoulder should really be of no concern to us, just the wideouts he will throw too.

The reason for the move is so that the rest of the team which is very young has someone to lead it. The offense will gain experience and Henne will have a good mentor (who will get beat up this year to protect Henne mentally).

Success is more important than draft position sometimes. Even if we have a 6-10 to 7-9 season we'll still be in line for whoever we need.

Many haven't noticed it, but in fact if all goes according to plan (when i's the last time it did?) we have:

QB- check
OL- for the most part check except depth
TE- check overall
WR- needs one more guy plus maybe a veteran (a 3 and a 4)
RB- check with Ronnie

So in the future all we really need on offense is more or less one pick for a RB and one pick for a WR. Let's say we take a WR in the second round with the Washington pick and we take a capable RB to eventually replace Ricky in 2010. We fill out the backup roster with veterans.

We're at the closest we've been in years to fielding a young and powerful offense. You need someone like Pennington to lead that for at least a year.

Defense... That's another story but it has its positives.

A Qb's completion percentage means less then nothing in the preseason.

If you were a HC, and on one hand you have a Qb that set records and led teams to the playoffs, and on the other, you have a Qb who has started 3 games, who would you go with, no matter what the preseason was like?

Dan was a BAD pre-season performer...year in, year out...but come game 1 he was lights out.

Not true the Jets had a horrible TEAM for quite a few years and they are still fighting to be respectable. This year they are trying to buy a team and we will see how that works out.

While Brett is a GREAT QB in that GB system he may not be the same guy in New York... He may be though we will see.

I think the Jets and Dolphins will be about the same record 8-8 9-7 range. I know you do not think that but Buffalo is better and I honestly think the Jets will lose the first game of the season to the Fins in Miami...and the Jets will win the second game in New York later this year.

I see use splitting Buffalo and losing twice to NE.

 

Not true. I remember his rookie year, he was unbelievable in preseason. It was obvious the Fins had somebody very special, especially compared to Woodley. After his rookie year, who cared how he played in preseason? It was obvious he was great.

Beck is no Dan Marino, obviously. Most guys don't have the luxury of not playing well in camp/preseason and still getting a shot.

 

I certainly think this signals the end of both McCown and Beck's careers with the Miami Dolphins.

 

I think you are premature on one of those predictions

 

My point was that even the greatest were not always great during the preseason.

I remember pretty much every pass that man threw his entire career and besides a few notable games/plays here and there, he would stink it up during the preseason. Now whether that was because either :

a. he didnt really care
b. he was rusty
c. Coach Shula/JJ was installing new packages/formations
d. testing out newly aquired players

Might be up for debate.

No one is saying Beck/Henne is Marino or any other HOF QB.

BUT, that Beck or whomever isn't playing lights out during the preseason is obviously a telling sign but its not the end all, be all sign.

EDIT: If it were, then go ahead and label QBs like Favre, Elway, Young, etc. etc. etc. as busts as well.

 

If you're talking about how they played in preseason once they were established as starters, then that's a different kettle of fish. They played badly (if they did play badly, which I don't know) because it didn't matter. Like Marino, Elway got the starting job as a rookie. Favre took longer to get the job, but had physical skills Beck could only dream of. Young (assuming you mean Steve) had years of quarterbacking in Tampa Bay and then backing up Montana (which meant lots of playing time, since Montana got hurt) before he got the starting job. Again, no comparison to Beck.

We're getting a little far afield, but another factor with Beck is that he's already past his mid 20s. That puts him on a much tighter timetable than your average second-year pro. Physically he's not going to get any better than he is now.

By the way, if you have preseason stats for Marino, Favre, Elway or Steve Young, I'd love to see them. If you can find Marino's numbers for an August 1983 game against the Skins they will make your eyes pop out.

 

Thats the problem though, each QB had a situation that they were placed in and as we've seen throughout history, some have succeeded and began to swim, so to speak, and some have just sunk straight to the bottom.

Then there's the late bloomers of which Young is a part of.

Well...again that is relative to the situation...as with Young...I mean seriously looking at him in Tampa he looked like crap. Yet, when he went to San Fran and got some great tutelage from Walsh, Montana etc. he was able to turn his career around.

Again, I am not suggesting this is the same with Beck. As I honestly feel that he has some serious issues. But all I am saying is that in the end, I would rather try and give Beck the benefit of the doubt for at least a few more weeks before I would suggest that (based on his preseason performances) he is not going to be an effective QB in this league and we make him the one we end up cutting.

I wish I did but unfortunately my noggin and years of watching football is all I have. :lol: Not that I haven't tried to find them... I can however easily get regular season stats for Young's, Favre's first few starts etc. which are less than stellar (and why it shows that Marino was indeed the Best:up:).

If they thought Beck was the guy then Chad Henne wouldn't have been picked. If they thought Beck would at least be a good mentor to Henne they wouldn't have picked up McCown and Pennington. Beck has too options. Step it big time and really wow them or become trade bait. At this point he'd have to pull a Derek Anderson I think to have a shot at staying with the 'Fins.
