When the Miami Dolphins traded a fifth-round pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for quarterback Tyler Thigpen in late September, it didn't make a dent in the NFL landscape, except to those connoisseurs of interesting offensive formations. In 2008, the Coastal Carolina alum ran 359 of his 420 snaps from the shotgun formation for Kansas City, an extreme 85 percent, even for a league heading more to the shotgun every year. Kansas City's offensive ace in the hole last season was the Pistol formation, which offensive coordinator Chan Gailey superimposed on his struggling offense. Invented by Chris Ault of the Nevada Wolfpack, the Pistol is a short shotgun formation with a halfback behind the quarterback and an H-back or blocking fullback outside. It's an interesting way to apply wide-open concepts without losing the blocking stability that is so necessary in the NFL.
I definately think we'll see more of this as the year goes on.

rafaelforum_veteranI live in Reno so I've seen a ton of the pistol offense and I'm also a UF alum so I've watched a ton of the Gator offense as well. Both of these offenses use the running QB to gain an advantage on the D (or at least negate the D's advantage). I have felt for years that the future NFL offense will borrow heavily from the concepts. We saw the beginnings of that in last year's wildcat. Going forward I believe that will develop into a well rounded attack. Of course people will play the silly name game about whether it's a wildcat or a pistol but the basic concepts are the same.

The question going forward is how, or if, the Dolphins will use these new looks and merge them with what they're already known for. It would be simple enough to counteract the rolling and blitzing defensive backs Miami's faced in the last few weeks with a motion to Pistol, allowing different directional and blocking ideas to stump the defenses who believe they have the Wildcat solved.

BigDogsHuntNew MemberThe Ronnie/Rickey run first - pass only if called - WildCat gave us the mismatch with personnel in the beginning. We have modified the unbalanced power line, and now the Pistol wrinkle with Pat W. (or Ronnie/Rickey) and as they say, Motion from WildCat to Pistol would be another wrinkle.
The Pistol with Pat W. is very interesting - and the POTENTIAL exceeds the traditional WildCat based on Pass (the minute Pat gets comfortable with NFL Speed and his own accuracy and being amped).
