As an aside, Kindle was taken with one of the 2 #2's we traded for Brandon Marshall.

the other player is Orlando Franklin, this is one of the reasons why I think the draft is way over hyped.

 

I suspect he is just unable to play physically, he never really recovered from his accident.

I don't see him as an upgrade over any player the Dolphins already have in the positions you noted he might play for the Dolphins. Obviously the Ravens would rather have an injured and overweight Suggs on their roster at this time than Kindle. I don't see Kindle as someone the Dolphins should be interested in at this time.

The draft is the end all, be all........... no hype.... Free agency is all hype. Free Agents suck. Same goes for Veteran outcasts with enough value to be on the trading block. :yes:

Huh? We never had Franklin, we traded two 2nd's and it was their choice what to do with them. Not every pick pans out, obviously.
The key point here is the "proven vets" arent staying on the team regardless.... so you'd better get something for them....... Still not sure how Kindle was taken with one of the #2's we traded to Denver. Did Denver trade that pick to the Ravens ?

My point is that in general, Free Agency is hype, the Best Free agents are looking to cash in and never really play to their potential. Good team players aren't let go. Cam Wake was technically a great Free agent signing but that really doesn't have anything to do with what i was talking about. He came from relative obscurity as an undrafted rookie free agent.

I make it a habit to follow who is drafted with the picks that are traded for a vet starter and 90% of the time, the team with the vet has a starter, the team with the picks winds up with da nada.

Cutler to the Bears for example.

 

Welker, it goes on and on.... your right about that.... Nothing beats a sure thing. But when that sure thing is walking out on you, your going to at least try to get something back in return. These proven vet's we're talking about were traded because they had to be, not because the team was dying to get that draft pick and roll the dice.

I'd be interested to see the trades where the team gave up a valuable pick that turned into great player, when the player they traded for pales in comparison...... I think that list would/could be more telling !

 

Right now we do appear to be ahead in the Davis for a #2 pick trade, so it is not always a truism.

Ireland really churned draft picks this past yr but as nearly as I can see, we wound up with Egnew so far from the Marshall trade.

We are down a 6th rd pick in 2013, but we did land a 6th rd pick from Dallas for Ryan Cook who is actually playing well for the cowboys the last time I checked.

Not to derail this thread, but this is exactly why I was against trading Vontae Davis for a 2nd round pick.

Believe what you want, but Vontae was already an established player who at worst would contribute at an average NFL level. He was 24 years old. If I had to put a number on it, I'd say that the 2nd round pick we got for him has a less than 30% chance of contributing to our team the way Vontae has and would have continued to.

 

Depends, VD was a headache apparently, and I suspect we use that pick on a high success type of player like a Left Guard or MLB. maybe even a Safety.

And even if we do, those guys aren't slam dunks in the 2nd round either. Guard, 40% maybe. But MLB and Safety....small chance they'll give the production Vontae gave/would've given, IMO. I'll keep that at around 30%

 

Those 3 positions rarely bust, true one can point to Jason Allen however he was something of a tweener coming off of a major hip injury with learning issues.

I've rarely seen a 2nd rd MLB or LG bust out.

I'd toss in a passrusher but think the org likes Vernon so why draft a guy who has no clear path to playing time?

 

Kindle had an awful injury before even stepping onto the field. It's a damn shame because it's a waste of talent and horrible thing to have happen to someone.

That's ridiculous. Had we not made the trade for Marshall, there is no telling whom the pick would have been used for.

 

Why are we down a 6th? Didn't we also get one in the Davis trade?

 

And there is always the exception that proves the rule. For every Cam Wake... how many utter and abject failures are there on every team? For us, for example, how many have failed to make the team.. Of course, here that is seen as an excuse to deride Ireland - deserved or not. But every team roots through a goodly number of free agents to find one acorn in the pile of leafs, rotted vegetation, and other droppings.

 

However, we will not really know the value of that trade for 2-3 years. Anything now is only suspicion, supposition, or speculation - at best.
But keep in mind that most really consistently good teams are formed through the draft. One may find an occasional gem, and a few pieces of the puzzle - but most of the good teams develop their own players through the draft. The number of abysmal teams Washington fielded while spending liberally from the coffers of Snyder's treasure store should be very instructive:

Very High Cost free agents seem to habitually get fat, happy, and usually lazy. We want guys with that lean and hungry look.

 

The other thing is with Vontae is the change of systems in Indy and extremely poor pass rush is affecting his coverage stats. You dont go from being at least average for a few years (some years better then average) to terrible without a logical reason.

Yes we did. We should actually be up picks in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 7th. We have more picks right now then any other team next year.

Were owning this trade so far. Vontae played like absolute dog crap (Made Marshall look like an All Pro) and then went out with an ankle injury the last 2 games.

 

Draft picks are opps to bring in cheap, young, players with upside and mold them into solid contributors with the carrot (a big 2nd contract) or stick (getting fired). It's low risk, high reward, and most teams build primarily thru the draft, not via trade or FA. IMO.

That can be done with later round picks, and they work even cheaper.

This is actually one of the geniuses for Ireland, we got 3 cheap yrs from Cam Wake as CFL refugee basically b/c NFL GM's do not think much of the talent that plays in that league, their bias worked against them.

 

We got a 7th for Cook.

 

While Marshall has been out with a back injury. Davis only had a bad rating for his first game in Indy. The next two games his pass coverage ratings according to PFF were a combined +2.9. Neither Marshall or Carroll have any 2 games this season where their combined coverage ratings have been as high as +2.9

 

I believe Sergio Kindle had narcolepsy coming out, which was really problematic in team meetings where he'd fall asleep. He was never much of a player at Texas though, I thought.

 

I agree, and before that draft there were a lot of rumors that Miami was interested in Kindle, even in the 1st. That was worrisome until we saw them pass on Kindle two times. Sign of relief time, but then again to wonder a bit because the great Ozzie Newsome seldom blows early picks.
