This is another thread that is similar to the view of Nolan's defense in Denver that I did a while back. However, this time it is against the San Diego Chargers. After hours of watching the game, rewinding in full speed, rewinding in slow motion and jotting down everything, I finished it and it is below. Also, you will see some images as you continue to read on (if you read lol). I would have used images earlier had I figured out how to take a snap shot of them. However, I finally did figure out and added quite a bit that I hope are helpful to you guys. You guys will see what I saw so I think we will all be on the same page or at least I hope so.

    1ST & 10

    Chargers Personnel - 2 TE's, 2 WR's, Singleback.

Denver Personnel - 3 man line.

    LE - 4 technique.
    NT - 0 technique.
    RE - 3 technique.
    Dumervil - 5 technique.
    Haggan - 5 technique.

Safety walks up to the LOS, single high safety closing down the middle of the field (MOFC). San Diego runs the ball and picks up eight yards.

    2ND & 2

    Chargers Personnel - 2 WR's, 1 TE and 2 tailbacks.

Denver Personnel - 4 man line.

    LE - 5 technique.
    NT - 1 technique.
    DT - 3 technique.
    RE - 5 technique.
    SOLB - 7 technique.

2 deep look with cornerbacks five yards off of wide receivers. Andra Davis blitzes through the A gap to stuff the run up the middle by San Diego.

    3RD & 2

    Chargers Personnel - 4 total WR's (2x2), Singleback.

Denver Personnel - 3 man line.

    LE - 3 technique.
    NT - 1 technique (weakside)
RE (Dumervil) - 5 technique in 3 point stance.

Denver runs Cover 1 Robber, DJ Williams being the Robber.

    1ST & GOAL

Chargers Personnel - 4 total wide receivers (3x1 Set), Singleback.

Denver Personnel - 3 man line.

    LE - 3 technique.
    NT - 1 technique.
    RE - 4 technique.

Denver has two cornerbacks in the game, the safety is on the slot receiver (#2 from passing strength) and a single-high safety with man coverage.

    2ND & GOAL

Chargers Personnel - 3 Wide Receivers, 1 TE, Singleback.

Denver Personnel - 3 man line.

    LE - 3 technique.
    NT - 0 technique.
    RE - 3 technique.
    SOLB - 7 technique.
    WOLB - 5 technique.

Denver has man coverage on the pass catchers with a single-high safety again.

    3RD & GOAL

Chargers Personnel - 4 Wide Receivers, Singleback.

Denver Personnel - 3 man line.

    LE - 5 technique.
    DT - 3 technique.
    NT - 1 technique.
SOLB - Stand up 5 technique.

Single high safety again, Cover 1 Robber used here. DJ Williams used as Robber whilst Wesley Woodyard has trail technique responsibility on tailback. DJ Williams was caught looking at the # 1 pass catcher outside for some odd reason and got beat over the top by Legedu Naanee.

    1ST & 10

Chargers Personnel - Wildcat (or Wildfrog as they call it), unbalanced line. LaDainian Tomlinson used as trigger man whilst Darren Sproles stands next to him. Twin sets on strong side, Rivers on flank alone on weak side.

Denver Personnel - 3 man line, 3 linebackers, 5 defensive backs. Cover 0 called by Nolan.

LE - 2 technique head up.
    NT - 1 technique.
    RE - 7 technique.

A defensive back walked up late and was used as a blitzer.

    2ND & 9

Chargers Personnel - Two Wide Receivers (1x1), 1 TE, 2 tailbacks.

Denver Personnel - 3 man line.

    LE - 3 technique.
    NT - 0 technique.
    RE - 4 technique.

    SOLB (Dumervil) - 7 technique.
    WOLB (Haggan) - 5 technique.

Cornerbacks continue to play press-bail coverage on outsides. Strong safety walks into tackle box and plays trail technique / man on tailback out of the backfield. Single high safety rotates into the middle of the field, closing that down.

    3RD & 8

    Chargers Personnel - 4 WR's (3x1), Singleback.

LE (Dumervil) - wide open five technique with hand in dirt.
    NT - 1 technique.
    RE - 3 technique.
    WOLB - 5 technique. -

Nolan used a 3-3-5 set here. Two deep set but it ended up being an offside penalty, which moved up the marker five yards.

    3RD & 3

Chargers Personnel - 4 total wide receivers (3x1), 1 Tailback next to Rivers in Shotgun form.

Denver Personnel - 4 man line. 4-2-5 used here.

    LE - 5 technique.
    DT - 3 technique.
    NT - 1 technique.
RE - 5 technique. (Dumervil used as wide open five here)

Cornerbacks play press-bail coverage again, man coverage overall and single high safety once again. Renaldo Hill the constant single high.

    1ST & 10

Unable to see because of a high camera angle and commentators showing some other highlights right up to the snap. All I could see was a 3-5-3 used by Nolan against the Wildcat of the Chargers.

    2ND & 9

Chargers Personnel - 4 total wide receivers (3x1 set), Singleback. San Diego motions to a 4x1 set, with the tailback coming out of the backfield.

Denver Personnel - 3 man line.

    LE - 5 technique.
    NT - 0 technique.
    RE - 3 technique.
Dumervil - WOLB - stand up 5 technique.
Haggan - SOLB - Across # 2 receiver on passing strength.

Denver has a single linebacker underneath here, one safety deep. Dumervil ends up dropping so its a three man line.

    1ST & 10

Chargers Personnel - Single wide receiver, 3 tight ends to one side, singleback.

    Denver's Personnel - 3 man line. 4 DB's with 1 deep ( Dawkins in box, Hill @ 15 yards deep).

    LE - 4 technique.
    NT - 1 technique.
    RE - 3 technique.
    WOLB - 5 technique. - Dumervil.
    SOLB - 5 technique. - Haggan.

    2ND & 9

Chargers Personnel - 3 total wide receivers (2x1), 2 tailbacks.

    Denver Personnel - 4 DB's and 3 man line.

    LE - 4 technique.
    NT - 1 technique.
    RE - 3 technique.
    WOLB - Dumervil - 5 technique.
    SOLB - Haggan - 5 technique.

The cornerbacks played man to man coverage, the strong safety was lined up on the # 3 who had a short split and the free safety was fifteen yards across the OC. In other words, MOFC, Cover 1.

    1ST & 10

Chargers Personnel - 2 Wide Receivers, 1 Tight End, 2 tailbacks.

Denver Personnel - 3 man line.

    LE - 5 technique.
NT - 1 technique (strong side)

Cover 1, single high safety with man coverage on outsides.

    2ND & 12

Chargers Personnel - 4 Wide receivers.

Denver Personnel - 3 man line, three linebackers, five defensive backs.

    LE - 5 technique.
    NT - 1 technique.
    RE - 3 technique.

Dumervil covers the slot receiver on the right (defensive view). Middle of the field closed (MOFC).

    3RD & 3

Chargers Personnel - 4 wide receivers, Singleback.

Denver Personnel - 4 man line, 2 linebackers, 5 defensive backs.

    LE - 5 technique.
    NT - 1 technique.
    DT - 3 technique.

Denver runs MOFO (middle of the field open) and runs a Cover 2 out of the 4-2-5 defense.

    1ST & 10

Chargers Personnel - 2 Wide Receivers, 1 Tight End, Singleback.

Denver Personnel - 3 man line.

Defensive backs run Cover 1 Man.

    2ND & 1

Chargers Personnel - Three wide receivers, one tight end, Singleback.

Denver Personnel - 3 man line.

    LE - 3 technique.
NT - 1 technique strong side.
    RE - 2i
    SOLB - Haggan - 7 technique.
    WOLB - Dumervil - 5 technique.

Denver runs a single high look once again, man coverage outsides.

    1ST & 10

Chargers Personnel - 2 Wide Receivers, 2 RB's, 2 Tight Ends (Manumaluena in place of the RG).

NT - 1 technique strong side.
    RE - 3 technique.
    Dumervil - WOLB - 5 technique.
    Haggan - SOLB - 7 technique.

Denver runs 2 deep at ten to twelve yards. It ends up being a run play, in which both safeties crash down.

    2ND & 8

Chargers Personnel - 2 RB, 1 TE, 2 Wide Receivers.

Denver Personnel - 3 man line.

    LE - 4 technique.
    NT - 1 technique.
    RE - 3 technique.
WOLB - Dumervil - Five technique.
SOLB - Haggan - Five technique.

Strong safety McBath, who replaced injured Dawkins, covered Y here whilst the cornerbacks played press-bail and man coverage again.

    3RD & 1

Chargers Personnel - 4 wide receivers, Singleback.

    Denver Personnel - 4 man line. 4-2-5.

    LE - 5 technique.
    DT - 3 technique.
    NT - 1 technique.
    RE - 5 technique.

Man coverage here. Could not identify which coverage it was.

    1ST & 10

Unable to see due to camera angle.

    2ND & 9

    Chargers Personnel - 2 Wide Receivers & 1 Tight End (2x1), 2 tailbacks (motion).

    Summary

As I watched this game and broke it down, it seemed like the defense was not always on the same page, specifically the secondary. Andre Goodman would play zone when he's suppose to play man and they would give up a long play. Another instance is when Champ Bailey is playing outside leverage whilst Andre Goodman plays inside leverage, for whatever reason, and ends up getting beat on a jump ball that went for twenty plus. Throughout the game, Goodman struggled. Nolan once again faced some bunch formations and when San Diego ran the ball, they picked up four or five often IIRC. Short passes gave Nolan trouble IMO, especially out of the bunch and trip sets. I wrote some notes at the top of my notebook and some of them were that I often saw an ILB blitzing through the A gap. It was usually Andra Davis. I wrote "MOFC" and underlined three times about four pages into my notes. It was a constant with Nolan's coverages. I also jotted down the following "Denver's struggles - physical wide receivers and lateral runs". Further, I wrote that the defensive line struggled to apply constant pressure. I had a talk with Conuficus the other night about this. The defensive line does not actually apply pressure by getting into the backfield, they usually push the pass blocker into the backfield and collapse the pocket that way. Not a lot of shedding blocks, more running through them. Last, I wrote that when it's third and long, the Broncos often rush four. In the first half, they did it almost every time.

I hope this helps clear some things up.

As long as i don't see so much 4DL,1 MLB on passing downs i'll be happy.

I'm looking to see if Nolan really belongs in the NFL because his last 4 years have been very shaky in my eyes.He can bring his different looks to the tabel but at the end of the day it's going to come down to the play of our new OLB's and new FS.

This site didn't think much of Roth or Hill as players but i'd just about pencil us in the playoffs if we had them two again.

I admittedly didn't read the down and distances plays (I'll probably come back to that after we **** up at some point in the season wondering why the hell we ran what we did, come here, and notice that it's a trend for Mike Nolan  ).

I did read the summary (and look at the pretty pictures  ). It's good to know that they keep the MOFC and that they take away the deep ball. How is this scheme against the run?

Nice write-up and I'm sure the research took a whole lot of time together (that's what I consider the downs and specific plays which is why I read the summary).

I would suggest maybe doing this

when you write acronyms for the first time because not everyone may understand what they mean

Otherwise very nice write up, Alen :)

I love how you say "I hope this helps clear things up" at the end...

The snapshots were sweet, but it's difficult to visualize the matchups and alignments without them. The summary was definitely worth the read and I certainly appreciate the effort involved in diving into the minutia of game film.

That said, it seemed like this guy[IMG]was trying to teach this guy[IMG]

God help me, I couldn't resist...

I did simplify it. I put the acronyms and their meanings.

Don't group us all in there. ;)

Eh, Nolan is an odd duck, I look at trends with players and coaches, and Nolan, for his entire career, has swung from "GREAT!" to "W..T..H!"

He led some great Giants defenses, then failed in Washington, then was back to the norm with the Jets, then was lucky to land a job as a Wr coach with the Ravens, then took over for Marvin Lewis and that D was Top 10, then failed in SF (and badly) then rebounded in Denver.

Nolan the DC unit on average finished #14 in the NFL, which is virtually the definition of "mediocre'..but #14 in total Defense for the SparanoPhins is a 10 place jump upwards.

The other odd thing about Mike Nolan's scheme is, he is much more effective in dealing with passing offenses than running offenses.

Neither of the teams they went to made the playoffs.

If you really don't think filling our two biggest needs with proven nfl starters would not change the outcome of our season. Then theirs no point in trying to talk to ya, lol.

Everyone from Las Vagas to me would have them as a playoff team right now if we didn't have them holes.

alen1, No i won't lol i was more talking about the talking heads of this site that are only right about 30% of the time and thought Beck would just be handed the team and that we wouldn't draft a QB in the 1st few rounds in the 2008 draft.

Every site has them talking heads that are only right 30% of the time yet 70% of the people take their word as if it was the word of God.

Funny, do you really suppose Roth was that much of a difference making player?

Because he wasn't, in fact Taylor and Roth finished #6 and #7 in PFF's final rankings of OLB's..lol

As for Hill, eh, Wilson did look like the much better player when he was signed, sometimes that just doesn't pan out.

Does Las Vegas have the Browns or Broncos as playoff teams right now? And every team, bar none, has holes.

Roth and Hill ?? Two more mediocre players would put us over the top ?? I don't think so. Roth was a flawed OLB in this scheme and had exactly 1/2 of one season that he played ok in. Then went up north somewhere had exactly 1/2 of one season that he played ok in....what does that prove ?? He can't cover at all, which was our main issue last season. He is strong against the run but very weak as a pass rusher (another weak point for our D last season)....what exactly does he bring ??

Hill was good two seasons ago here. I was disappointed in seeing him go because I just knew that the Wilson move was going to be a disaster. Unfortunately, I was right (not that I am very often, but this particular time I was). Still, Hill is simply a journeyman FS who had exactly one good season with us. To top it off, he's now playing SS, which puts him out of place. Either way you look at it, he's just a journeyman DB and not a difference maker in any D...

Maybe Nolan isn't the second coming of Buddy Ryan, but he certainly has better credentials than Pasqueloni. I'll take that, at this point, over the formation of a new D called the "Black Hole"....not because it was something special, but because we left the middle so wide open, it was like an empty baseball field out there...our S's and ILBs might have well have been just leather covered bases out there because they certainly didn't cover anyone...
