The Dolphins' Taylor: The Long Goodbye
I understand Taylor's under contract. I understand he's obligated to attend next month's minicamp. I also understand he's not going anywhere unless the Dolphins decide to trade him or cut him. Chad Johnson, Part II, right? Not quite. First, he never made a public stink. Second, he tried to meet with the head coach and was rebuffed. Third, he tried to sort out his issues with the club privately and got nowhere. Fourth, he's the face of this franchise -- admired by teammates, loved by fans and honored by the NFL.
So he took a turn on Dancing With the Stars. So what? This has nothing to do with that and everything to do with his not conforming to Bill Parcells' program. But Taylor let the Dolphins know he wasn't Parcells' kind of guy and asked for a get-out-Miami card. I haven't seen one, and I don't expect it soon. That should make for some interesting conversation if/when Taylor fails to show for minicamp.
People tell me that Taylor, who turns 34 in September, would like to play one more year where he has a chance to do something other than lose another 10 or 11 games. That's not unreasonable, and maybe you agree; maybe you don't. But tell me this: What in the world are the Dolphins getting out of this mess other than bad press?
