It's the summer dead period so I thought I'd throw this one out for a bit of fun.
What's your all-time Dolphins squad?
You can pick any player who has played for the Dolphins, but we'll limit this to just the starters and a backup QB.
Have at it!

On a side note, I think all of us have chosen some top All Time Dolphins teams and any one of these would DOMINATE the league.
My only note on Shula however is that I would want the Don Shula if the 70s versus the latter years. He was mean, nasty and played an in your face smash mouth game -

Wow, that's pretty rough! Thanks for the info guys.
One more question- he moved into my neighborhood around 1977 or 1978. Was he still playing at that time? I remember he had big parties all the time and there were other athletes there.....but this was when I was 5 years old. The parties continued into the early 80's and then they moved over to Weston. -
Fernandez was done in the mid 70's, so probably retired (from football) when he was in your neighborhood.

No, it was definitely Manny the football player- he had a daughter Christina that was my age so I was over there a decent bit. He invited the neighborhood over at least a couple times a month and all the dads would love the locker room stories, game stories, etc...my dad's 83 though and his memory isn't there anymore. He said I met a good bit of that early 70's team but i was too young to realize it was royalty.
I do remember a lot of football games in his backyard with the neighborhood kids though...we'd start playing and the adults would come out with us. So it would be a pretty cool memory if I actually had all the pieces.
One memory I do have vividly- I was probably 8 or 9. Christina and I were walking from her house to my house, and suddenly she announced "I have to pee". So she walked to some bushes on the side of the road and did her thing. I couldn't really see anything but as a young boy, I naturally paid attention...and here comes Manny driving around the corner in his Cadillac. He stopped the car right next to me and gave me a look of hate and intensity that I'll never forget...as a kid I didn't understand the moment but felt really guilty anyway. And scared...I remember feeling very scared.
LOL, that's not a good memory at all.Last edited: Jun 30, 2018Claymore95 likes this. -
My friend I second that remark. Very smart and thoughtful. In particular that 1972 team members.DenverDolfan likes this.

Instead of an "All-Time" Dolphins team, I'm going to give my favorite players from my own time as a diehard fan, which is the late 80s-present. In some cases, I'm also going to list good players who are personal favorites over some guys who may be objectively or statistically better.

Man have we lacked great players on offense over the past 3 decades, besides Zack and JT, the same for the defense
The linebacking unit besides Zach has been pathetic..
Just really bad front office work for a very long time.. -
Linebacker has been a problem almost my entire 30+ year time as a fan of the team. There were a few good years under Jimmy, but everything before and after has been lousy. Frustrating to see so many other teams make it look so easy.
-
No body outside of Zach and Offerdahl that made any real impact or that we could say, he was a very good player, and no one who was considered great outside of zach.
I guess dansby was good for a couple years, I wouldn’t say very good or great
I’m my whole existence I haven’t seen anyone but him and I got a few years on ya.
Like I said pathetic.. -
Dansby was a real kick in the pants. Pro Bowler with the Cardinals for multiple years, then signs a big contract with Miami and his play falls way, way off. We cut him, he goes back to Arizona and puts up big numbers again.

One guy that always gets overlooked in these compilations is CB Curtis Johnson. He was a true shut down corner. So much so, no one threw into his area during the three year Super Bowl run back in the 70's. That side of the field was walled off. Shula once said he was sorry that Johnson didn't get his due because his stats as to int's were low. But that was because no one tried throwing his way.

I actually had no idea who he was until a few years ago when some of you were talking about him. Like you said, with all of the acolades that the other players from that era get, he's virtually forgotten.Ohiophinphan likes this.

No love for Patrick Cobb in here. tsk tsk tsk.
Thumbs up. -
IMO the coaching staff and how we used him was a big factor. People underestimate how much situation matters. They like to think that great players will be great regardless, but that simply isn't true. All players have weaknesses and strengths. You put any player in a situation where their weaknesses are exposed and they don't get to use their strengths and they will look much worse.
