Sceetoforum_veteranOPDouglas is 6’4″, 304 lbs offensive guard and has experience in offensive tackle and offensive guard which the Dolphins need some of the most help with. Most of his experience is from playing on the left side of the center, which means he will be competing with 3rd year Miami Dolphin Dallas Thomas.
Douglas is also a 2 time All-Pac 12 selection and there is also no shortage of people pleading his case as more or less capable.

Even the Arizona State sports performance coach Shawn Griswold was quoted as saying…
“Jamil is a 303-pound guy and with his shirt off he looks like he’s 265, And he’s so big, so long, so lean, but what’s impressive is the things he does with those strength numbers. To clean 385 and be that tall, that’s hard to do. The only other guy I’ve ever seen do that – and I wasn’t his coach, he was at the University of Utah when I was at Utah State – was Jordan Gross, and he was a Top 10 draft pick and played (in the NFL) forever. And for Jamil, to bench 430 with those long arms, that’s a long way to press a weight.”
I think there is potential in some of these new guys like Douglas and D players like Luc, etc.. I hope. That would be great.

Skip to the 3:00 minute mark in the video and there's coach's film of Jamil Douglas playing LG at ASU. This is from his junior season. I like his pass-pro vs. Leonard Williams and Louis Nix. There's even a few snaps of him having to play RT on here. He knocks Leonard Williams way off balance at 3:09.
- I like his footwork and think he's a natural fit for this scheme and he does pretty well in space. If he wins the starting LG spot, he and Pouncey can both pull functionally.
- His ability to move laterally is pretty good.
- Has a tendency to pop straight up at times in pass-pro. When he does this, I think his initial punch is slow to hit and lacks requisite pop.
- His foot quickness is pretty good so even if he sets poorly, he's quick enough to get back into position to not get walked back into the QB.
- When he sets well in pass-pro his initial punch looks good.
- Not many clips of him run-blocking when he's not pulling; I think he needs to get stronger in his upper body.
- Has a tendency to try and cut guys when he's out in space instead of attaching to a defender and walling him off; there's some whiffs on his cut attempts.
- Certainly a fit in this offense and some nice tools to work with. I think at some point this year he's the starting LG, be it week 1 or later on.

Pandarillaforum_veteranLouis Tee gives good breakdown on Jamil. He said his lateral movement scares him. However, he's extremely mobile. He said they pulled him all the way from left tackle spot to seal the edge past the right tackle. That's extreme.
They might've made a great move with Jamil. The guy was asked to play left tackle his senior season. He was solid, but not great. Lateral agility is limited but his mobility is excellent. A freak in the weight room. Along with being in an offense that has a high snap count per game... I like him. Could work out right away as a left guard.

CrunchTimeretired_adminThe question is how long will it take him to get up to speed .If you remember Mathis struggled when he was on the team which is why he got cut.Now we want him back . If he is a student of the game and works hard its possible he becomes effective in the early part of the season.

early reports that Ive heard and read is that he's picked up the system so we shall see, it looks like their gonna give him a legit chance to win the job..

Starting Jamil may be a huge risk, but so is buying Mathis. If you sign Mathis you're basically conceding that we lose either Miller or OV next year. We need every penny after the spree we went on this offseason. And although PFF is in love with Mathis, the fact Kelly didn't see use for him in an offense designed to run the ball heavily with a fragile QB situation, is a real cause for concern. Every team has weak spots heading into the season, ours is OG, but I for one won't be upset if we let the young guys compete for a spot. Sure there's a lot of risk there, there's risk in every decision in this league, but something tells me Mathis isn't looking to sign cheap at all and I simply don't know if we can/should buy him.

I feel good about Albert being ready to start the season so your point rings well with me.

Mathis seemed itching to get out of his deal so I guess he thinks he has value above that (which seems odd to me). Mathis could be great and/or get a great deal, but I think there are limitations to his game and I wonder if any team will pay a higher price than he was making for a 33 year old guard.

I'm pretty much at the point where it wouldn't kill me if we didn't sign Mathis...but it would really suck to see him go to a division rival.

What limitations are you talking about? it sounds like pillowtalk for a letdown.
Because Philbin and Benton both emphatically denied any issues they saw with their guards. They can hang themselves with their bold off-season statements.
I've seen this movie too many times, though. You have too.
All I know is that PFF rated him top three for three years.

He can pull but he doesn't have the lateral mobility or size/length for tackle.
He could be the next prototype for guards, though.
