Analysts say Miami Dolphins pick Jared Odrick 'dominant,' 'perfect'
http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/04/23/1593959/analysts-say-odrick-dominant-perfect.html

Mayock believes Odrick is better suited to play defensive end than nose tackle in Miami's 3-4 defense. Nose tackle is a Dolphins need and DE is not.

``He's got a great motor, heavy hands,'' Mayock said. ``He's a guy that will start out as a rotational player with Kendall Langford, Randy Starks and Phillip Merling, but ultimately will be a starter for Miami.''

I like the pick.... did we have different needs then he feels, probably, but I don;t think you can go wrong by picking best player available and he to our front office was obviously that. You can never have enough good big linemen.

He's on the ground a lot so he's not dominant. He doesn't fit our biggest need so he certainly wasn't perfect. It was a bad trade and a bad pick.

A bit too early to make those judgments.

What if he turns out to be Ricahrd Seymour?

Far from perfect, another dum move if you ask me.

We had a few options at 12 and we blew it if you ask me.

i hate the what if.......
we have certain needs on this team and DE isn't one of them
to justify a pick thinking this guy will turn into someone else is only speculation
Odrick is a project at NT and was added to a crowded DE position

All picks are based upon speculation.

There are no sure things.

DE might well have been considered a position of need if we play more 4-3 this year due to the absence of a true NT

He's going to play DE but now I believe Randy Starks is now a NT. I think we decided to deal with that position in the family.

Starks was a NT prospect coming out of Maryland, but I cant see us moving him after the season he had last year. Wonder what the FO is thinking....its not as if they dont have a plan. I just wonder what it is.

I'm happy with it. I think our run-D will be better and Mike Nolan will have a plan for him in our Nickel and Dime formations.

Im completetly fine going BPA in that spot, and love that we traded down and recouped half of the Marshall compensation. I'm gonna trust the FO on this one, these guys know what theyre doing.

It is probably more likely that the FO is successful in picking a D lineman than that you will sprout wings and fly.

Just going to throw this out there as it's been discussed partially the last couple of years ... Maybe they look to have Merling lose some weight and play more of a SOLB (ala the surprisingly departed Roth). After Merling was drafted, he was asked to gain some weight to play DE. Maybe they ask him to get back to where he was or slightly lower and move him.

We made our D line better with this pick and regardless of what the fans think our biggest needs are, the front office spends hours upon hours upon hours analyzing these players and figuring out what's best for our team. Have some faith, at least they didn't trade up and take Jacoby Ford or some random *** pick like that. I think this was a great move and I'm not the only one.

I realize that these are just fan opinions here but some good points are made and I thought I'd share.

Odrick was a great pick still being on the board at 28. He was big ten defensive player of the year that itself says something.

That's why they play the games!

I think we wanted Dan Williams and thought he would be there. after that they tried to find a guy who was like him and blew the pick
i feel like they just turned in the card
Odrick won't be special he will just be another one of those mediocre guys

Parcells / Ireland know what they're doing, and I'm very satisfied. We recouped a 2nd round pick by trading down, and also landed a very promising defender at #28 in the process. We need defense, and Odrick has the size, strength, and motor to become a very solid player for us...

Ok, here's the other side of that:

Yes, he's on the ground a little too much for my liking, but he can be taught to avoid that with hand and feet placement.

Second, he doesn't fit our biggest need, but this regime doesn't draft in the first on need. Why take a lesser OLB (Hughes or Kindle for example) and not take a better DE, who is versatile enough to play inside a lot like Randy Starks, arguable our best DL ?? This regime drafted very true to it's mantra. Core positions first, but BPA.

Third, it was a good trade because even as our 3rd ILB, Dobbins is better than Ayodele ever was, and he plays excellent STs, another mantra of this regime...(i.e. if a player can't start, he needs to play STs, Ayodele couldn't).

I have to disagree, although I would have loved to have seen Hughes (even tho he was a better option at WOLB, which we have less of a need) or Kindle, who at #28 would have been right where his value was figured at, and of course we don't know if the rumors of the micro-fracture surgery are true either, which would put him down in the mid 2nd range. But Ireland did what he has done in the past. I think the Dobbins pickup is a much better part of this trade than most seem to think. The kid can play...

EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot the most important thing, they recouped that missing 2nd round pick in a very deep draft. If you think of it, lets suppose they draft Kindle (OLB), Morgan Burnett (FS) or Jason Worilds (OLB) then what do you think of what they've done in this offseason...arguably the best D player in FA and the best O player in FA, and filling at least one of the major needs in the draft...

No, this was a very good deal for us if you consider all the moves they've made.

The rumor from the local journalists is that if we couldn't trade back Thomas would have been the pick. And that when we traded back we expected Hughes to be the guy that was still around. They didn't expect Odrick to still be there. And obviously they had Odrick rated higher.

Also IMO Odrick is being brought in as a NT first and as a DE second.

All great points Larry. I agree with you 100%. I'll only add that the FO must have a plan in place to take Odrick over Hughes. Still not sure what it is, but I trust their judgment, and I think our D got better last night (with more help coming tonight...I hope).

Mr. Parcells...please draft Jason Worilds tonight. :praying:
