All of this stuff comes from leaders among the players who keep their teammates galvanized toward a post-season goal. Are there any of those on the team?

 

Philbin has the personality and charisma of a wet mop- coaches are supposed to motivate their teams and get them jacked up to play, and that being the case there is no worse coach in the NFL as to getting his team emotionally ready to take the field, imo.

Hate to say it, but also imo if you look at this game objectively- injuries, performance 1st two games- the Dolphins are in for a rough day. If the Dolphins weren't emotionally ready to play last week and came out flat- and the head coach realized that and wasn't able to rally the troops and turn that sh** around- then why is he the head coach? Wouldn't he better serve the team by checking for typos in the game plans and looking for gum wrappers on the locker room floor?

Philbin has almost no charisma or ability to motivate, he never should have been a head coach to begin with. If the Dolphins are exposed this week, after a horrendous and embarrassing loss last week and now at home against a division rival, this could be the beginning of the end for Queasy Joe.

 

We enter every game at a disadvantage just because queesy is clueless out there.

 

Vernon jumps offsides to negate a stop on 3rd down. Grimes loses a jump ball on a deep throw. McCain can't find the ball on another deep throw. Jennings drops a gimme on 3rd down in the red zone. Aikens bites on a double move. Franks missed a FG, Grimes drops an easy INT, McCain takes an ill advised PI, the refs give Jax give Jax an extra 3 yards to make the FG makeable. Theres the slow start right there and it had very little to do with coaching, it was the players not getting the job done when they opportunities to make plays.

Going back to Washington. Offense can't convert a 3rd and 1 on the first drive. Or a 4th and one in the red zone. Jones trips on his shoe laces and gives up a TD. Tannehill misses Sims and Stills for easy scores, then fumbles away another scoring opportunity. Again, players not making the plays that are available.

Blaming Philbin is popular and somewhat comforting I suppose, but it's simply not accurate.

 

So what was it that Philbin saw in pregame warmups against the Jags last week that he didn't like?

 

Lack of discipline is on the head coach whether you like it or not.

 

I like facts. And film. Not visceral, half baked analysis. The fact is that the Dolphins are one of the more disciplined, least penalized teams in the league under Philbin. The Jax game was extreme outlier.

 

An extreme outlier as per the team coming out flat during the tenure of Joe Philbin? How did the last two years end with the playoffs on the line, missing the playoffs because the team came out flatter than a pancake and missed the playoffs in do or die games, right?

There are coaches who have been excellent at getting their teams ready through great coaching, X's and O's- which btw is a responsibility of the offensive and defensive coordinators, and I would imagine that some HC's like Bellichick have more input than others. Other are also great motivators of men, the John Madden, Bill Cowher, Mike Ditka and Don Shula types. Philbin is neither, and that's a problem.

Does Philbin create the game plans? Does Philbin call the offensive or defensive plays? What is his level of expertise? The offensive line, is that even possible considering how crappy they've been during his tenure? Whatever it is that Philbin actually does, what he certainly doesn't do is motivate his players as a more charismatic coach should and would. Philbins strengths, I would imagine, are his work ethic and attention to detail. He should have maxed out as an assistant coach, never should have been a head coach to begin with. He is simply not an effective leader of men, no matter how you look at it.

 

I'd like to see more energy from Philbin on the sideline. I think people feed off of other people's energy, and an energetic, excited coach would help. Someone screws up... get on them when they get to the sideline. Someone does good....get hyped.

 

Those are good points. I honestly have no idea what Philbin does, he seems like more of a hands off guy. Just once I'd like to see him on the sideline coaching up somebody, anybody LOL.

What I take a bit of an issue with is the blame Philbin first attitude. These are professional football players not POP Warner grade school kids. They don't need a rah rah guy to get then going. IMO it's the captains and team leaders who bear that responsibility.

Overall I'll just say Philbin has plenty of flaws we can talk about, there's no need to go inventing new ones.

 

That video was really strange. I don't know if the guys were just embarassed to act fired up in front of the cameras, but it was weird. Worst part was when Landry said "If you want some!!!" and there were about 3 or 4 players next to him and no one answered. Some guy who wasn't even in the picture yelled "Come get some!".

 

Fifty games as an NFL head coach and he still hasn't figured out how to get his team prepared to defeat an inferior opponent.
Philbin is not qualified to be a head coach in the NFL, but unfortunately Ross is the only person who can make a change. Yet all Ross did was give Philbin a contract extension after finishing with a sub 500 record after 3 years as the Dolphns HC.

As his ownership continues, the more it appears Ross is the real problem with this organization.

 

My point is that lack of emotion wasn't a factor in the game or the "slow start". From what I saw it was the guys on the field failing to make plays. Do you seriously think Aikens, McCain, Grimes, Jennings, Wake, Vernon etc didn't make plays bc they weren't fired up in warmups?

 

I appreciate the input, but I strongly disagree with your point that motivating a team isn't a head coach's responsibility- it might be the main one. Should players motivate themselves and team captains motivate the team as well? Certainly. But a head coach, he's got to motivate the troops to play, get them fired up and on track. That's just a basic, intrinsic and massively important function of the job imo.

 

Yes- if they're not charged up and mentally/emotionally ready to go they're not going to give peak performance.

 

How about Jax made plays and Miami didnt? It shouldnt be so hard to credit the other team for playing well. It's like people forget that other teams have NFL players and coaches too.

Philbin himself noticed it, that should tell you something.

 

I am always a bit dubious when a coach of many years in the NFL gets a HC job, most successful HC's in the NFL had somewhat of a meteoric rise, they are leaders and that shines and they get promoted quickly.

Philbin got the HC job here because he was lucky enough to be Aaron Rodgers OC, and any of us would be successful as Aaron Rodgers OC.

 

We need about 4 or 5 more Landry types on this team. We should make it a priority in the draft. It seems like everyone we draft is soft spoken, mellow, and laid back... we need guys who can motivate the rest of the team.

 

Same her Bro, I Def appreciate your input. You're right we just happen to disagree on this one. Rex Ryan is a rah rah guy of the highest standard. But his team's get blown ouy/come out flat far more than Philbin's. They fell behind by 24 last week before they finally woke up and I'm not sure if they woke up of NE took their foot off the gas. We're the Bills fired up? I dunno. But I do know they took about a half dozen personal fouls in the first half.

I'd challenge anyone to watch what Wash did to the Rams D last week then say Miami came out flat in week 1. They have a really good run scheme with two physical backs, I credit them for that before I dump on the Dolphins and Rams for being flat.

I've watched all of his interviews on the team site going back to training camp. He says a lot of things. And what seems to be the case is people ignore him entirely until he says something they agree with. Then it's "even Philbin said this" or "Philbin admits that". I don't even like Joe Philbin, never have. But let's be real, he's been designated as the pre selected fall guy for 2015 and I'm not down with that.

 

Lol please don't go there. Philbin also says you gotta go back and study the tape to see what really happened in the game. Maybe this whole forum outside a handful of people should take his word.

Big difference there, the Bills say that they came out too fired up- that I would consider an anomaly. Ryan got outcoached by Bellichick (no surprise there) but I don't think that they came out flat, rather too jacked up, something I don't recall hearing before.
