Paramount Pictures approached producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott with offers to re-vamp the 1980s hit, according to New York magazine. They've also got their sights set on "The Usual Suspects" screenwriter and Oscar winner Christopher McQuarrie to bring Maverick's world into the 21st century.
Speaking of Maverick, Tom Cruise will be reprising the role in a smaller format, so long as it's not too "obvious." So flight instructor is out; maybe military advisor to the president? Russian double-agent? Janitor? Only time will tell."

The one thing I will say about this... is if they're going to do this, at least use real flight footage again. That was the one great thing about the original. Most flight scenes in movies now are pretty much 100% special effects. Im sure the original top gun had its share, but most of the flight scenes were actually shot with camera's attached to those f-14's and such. Either way, i'm sure this movie won't have a shot in hell.
