According to multiple reports, the team has parted ways with offensive line coach Matt Applebaum. Applebaum was hired last year to be part of Mike McDaniel’s first staff in Miami. The Dolphins job was Applebaum’s first in the NFL since he spent the 2014 season as an offensive assistant with the Jaguars. He was the offensive line coach at Boston College before making the move to Miami. Dan Roushar, who spent several seasons as the Saints offensive line coach before working with their tight ends the last two years, has already met with the Dolphins about the vacancy.
It does seem odd to fire a guy who had to work with an endlessly changing cast of characters due to injury. We always hear about the key to a good line is having a consistent five starters who grow together to form a unit. These guys didn’t know who they were lining up next to from week to week.
Maybe, but then again a great OL coach can really make the difference in an OL’s performance. Our OL played better this year than last…but that’s still not saying much.
Grier needs to remove the turds from the offensive line but he's too stubborn to move on from his draft picks. The biggest difference in the OL this year was just the big money we spent on it in Connor and Armstead. A new coach isn't a miracle worker. Fix/improve the actual roster.
Guess I'm going to say let see. On one hand having constant OL coaches sucks for the players and progression, but on the other hand I like that Gase who's an offensive minded coach saw enough to tell that there was an issue and has made moves to rectify the issue. Apple had been a low hanging fruit that I assume McDaniel grabbed to put together a quick staff and is now tweaking that. Also that offensive line even without injuries couldn't produce a run game.
Looks like that opening has been filled: https://www.si.com/nfl/dolphins/.am...colleague-for-new-miami-dolphins-o-line-coach
Barry also was let go. At the time, the Broncos had allowed a league-high 57 sacks and ranked 23rd in the NFL in rushing.... that does not sound promising.
