Their window of opportunity was very small dictated by the way they did business. They mortgaged their future for the success they had the last 2 years, and they fell short.

I like the analogy I saw at another site.

Sparano lost weight by doing things the correct way, he dieted, and exercised. It took him a longer time to do it but he did it.

Fat Rex did the ultimate quick surgery. Took all of a day, and like 10 days to lose weight.


The teams are each a reflection of that. Sparano et el has taken their time to draft smart, develop their own players and we are now very deep at a few key positions, we still have some to go, but D-Line, D-backfield and WR are pretty solid for many years to come.....

The jests tried to do everything with a lap-band surgery, and they are now where they were 2 years ago....

Its not just this draft they have traded away, they traded away an entire draft for Snatcho, Greene and a mediocre lineman that is probably gonna end up getting cut.

They have traded away their future for that short window. Now they are done IMHO.

I like all the talk about them bringing in Asoumugha or OuchoStinko et el. They have zero clout or leverage. IF the brought in Aso, he and Revis would send them sooooo far over the cap, they would have to cut any other value they had and hire kids off the street.

The Jets are going to franchise Harris because it is the most cost effective way to keep him. If he is left to hit the FA market, they would have to pay him more than what they will if they franchise him. It's the smart thing to do and it has nothing to do with his age.

LT makes a relatively modest 2.4 mil in base pay. If the Jets want him, he will be back.

The Jets won't pay WR money for Smith. If someone else is willing, they will let him walk.

That leaves Holmes, Edwards and Cromartie. I believe Holmes and Cro will be back. So that leaves Edwards. I think they can survive, as they did in 2009 with Edwards and Cotchery.

Taylor and Ellis are most likely gone. I love Ellis as a life long Jet, but he is old. Taylor is done and can be replaced with someone much younger and cheaper.

And I have no problem with them considering Plaxico (assuming the guy can still play). If Vick can get another chance after dog fighting, Plaxico deserves one for shooting himself in the leg.

 

Run the ball. Play defense. We're not re-building.

How about we talk when there is an actual cap number instead of speculating? Money is going to come off their payroll. The free agents also had salaries that would have counted against the cap. You have to take the difference between their expiring deal and the new one.

I'd bet dollars to donuts the Jets retaain at least 3 of the Holmes, Edwards, Harris, Cromartie, Smith group. And they are very stable at what is considered the most important position on the team: QB. I would not want to be entering the 4th year of a rebuilding program with huge question marks surrounding that position.

After some research, it seems to be very accurate. So as it stands right now, The Jets have $120,589,122 on the books. This doesn't include the expiring contacts of the FA's. Based on the numbers from this website, here is what I would start with:

Cut:
Jenkins: -4,600,000
Thomas: -3,700,000
Woody: -3,240,000
LT: -2,425,000
Taylor: -2,275,000
Hartsock: -1,650,000
Brunnell: -1,300,000
Turner: -480,000
Gholston: -466,666

That leaves them at $100,452,456.

I disagree that the salary cap will be lower than 09. I don't see the players caving on that issue. They will concede the 18 game season and the rookie cap. But until the CBA is done, it's all speculation. I am going to go with the 09 cap figure of $127,000,000. That will leave the Jets roughly $27,000,000.

Here is an analysis of franchising Harris. http://nyjetscap.com/harrisvalue.php 10.3 mil is a ton of money for Harris. I really don't think he would get that on the open market and the Jets would be better off negotiating a long term deal. But for now, let's whack 10 mil off the 27 mil and we have 17 mil remaining.

So with 17 mil remaining, they need to sign Holmes or Edwards. I say Holmes, but I don't know how they would structure the deal and what the 2011 cap number would be. Holmes is good, but he is NOT in the class of the top 5 paid receivers, which averages around 10 mil. I'd like to see them work a deal that has a cap figure of around 7 mil. We are then down to 10 mil and Edwards is gone.

Here is where I just don't know how to continue. I have no idea what Cromartie is worth without doing a ton of research to see what others at the position are being paid. He's above average...a little less than good. What would you pay him? Got me :) I'd bring back LT at a lower number, especially since he wears down as the season goes on. Hunter filled in nicely for Woody and I think they could go on without him. Jenkins hasn't played meaningful games for the Jets in 2 years, so there is no loss there. I also don't think they need to tie up 1.3 mil in a backup QB. Sanchez has proved to be pretty durable and all you need is a guy that can fill in for a half or a game. Anything more than that and the season is lost anyway.

They definitely have their work cut out for them, but I don't think it is impossible to keep their real good players and replace the ones that will have to be replaced. But then again, I am not an NFL GM. All the doom and gloom over the potential cap is found in this forum. But I've yet to read on any sports news site that the Jets won't be able to sign anyone. In fact, Gary Myers thinks the Jets should sign Nnamdi. I think reality lies between this forum's predictions of the Jets demise and Myers "sign everyone" recommendation. I really think there are a ton of factors that need to play out and it all starts with the CBA. But in the meantime, enjoy your prognostication of the Jets descent to last place :)

His cap number for 2011 is $17,753,125. From nyjetscap.com

His salary cap number drops in 2012 ($14,253,125) and 2013 ($8,003,125). His cap number was $8.9 mil in 2010, so this is by far the year with the biggest cap number. I wonder if they can rework his deal to spread it out and lower the 2011 number.

In 09-10 it was $607,740. Also, according to that site, the Dolphins total payroll for the 2009-2010 season was second highest in the league at $126,383,421. That was $6 mil more than the Jets. That surprised me.

 

I think the Jets are set at the following positions:

Entire OL, which is key to stability. Hunter showed me that he can be a viable and cost effective replacement to Woody.
QB - would like to see Sanchez's contract restructured though.
RB - Greene will take over as the feature back, and if LT isn't back, I believe McKnight will get the job done.
TE - Keller is signed and Hartsock can be replaced for less money. I don't think he is a "vital" piece to the puzzle
WR - this is where they need to spend some money. Other than Cotchery, the rest are FA's. The will need to sign Holmes or Edwards. Either way, they will have a corp of receivers that resemble the 2009 squad. It could be worse.

So on offense, I think they are in great shape and if Sanchez continues to improve (and improve he did from 2009 to 2010. No one can debate that), their offense should be fine.

On defense:
Revis is one of the best CB's in the league and he is under contract. You can not understate how important the CB role is in Rex Ryan's system and Revis is phenomenal. He basically takes away the other team's #1 receiver. He is a true impact player. Would I rather have our dominant player be a fearsome DL or linebacker? Probably. But having a guy like Revis is a serious defensive weapon. However, having Revis means that team's target the other CB's and they need at least an average to above average CB to play opposite Revis. Cromartie is ok and I would like him back. It all depends on the price. In a worst case scenario, they end up like 2009 with Revis and no one else worth a crap. I'd love to see Kyle Wilson reclaim the role. He was a rookie last year and CB is a tough position to step into straight out of college. Leonhard should be back from his injury. His cap number is a manageable 2.3 mil. And as much as I have hated Eric Smith, he played better down the stretch and could be resigned cheaply. Poole was a bit of a disappointment and I would not lose sleep if he is gone. Do you think he is irreplaceable? I don't.

LB's - Harris will be resigned one way or the other. Taylor will be gone. Pace and Scott need to step it up....way too much money invested between them. And yes - they are old :) But at the end of the day, basically the same LB group will be back.

DL - Is there anyone in this group that is irreplaceable....a guy that makes you say, "Man, they will be in bad shape if they don't resign X"? Gholston will be gone and not missed. Thomas is very ordinary and is replaceable. Jenkins has been MIA for 2 years. Not having him does not weaken the 2010 defense. Pryce? Come on. The guy is ancient and his loss will not impact the Jets significantly. Ellis should retire. Again, they have no stars on the DL and no one is irreplaceable. You can name names and say, "look at all the starters they are losing!" but none of them are impact players. I truly believe Rex can field a respectable defense with just about anyone, especially with Revis taking out the other team's top WR.

So really - who are the impact players the Jets could be losing? Edwards and to some extent Cromartie. Look at the rest of the list and tell me they are impact players. Folk? You said he sucked throughout the season. Pryce? Rented for the season with minimal impact. Woody? It has already been shown that he can be replaced. Ellis? His best days are long behind him. LT? Most likely will return and a decent price. Eric Smith? Show me a post anywhere on this board that sings his praises. Poole? Replaceable. Taylor? Come on.

I know it's easy to point at the sheer number of players, but you really need to look at the quality of players and how they could be replaced. I do not see the doomsday scenario that you predict. The Jets are set at the majority of the key positions. And Ryan will field a competitive defense with a bunch of retreads if he has too (which me might for the DL and a few DB positions).

I understand playing Devil's advocate. You predicted the demise of Folk through the year....the late season collapse that never happened....Sanchez's many int's that never materialized....his inability to play in cold weather which went up in smoke in Pit (twice), Chi, and NE. I get it and it's fun :) And I hope your streak continues!

 

I am not adverse to you calling it rebuilding. Seriously. Call it whatever you want. As I stated before, I *want* changes made - especially on defense.

As far as a booger receptacle, maybe the Jets will get lucky and Henne gets cut in the offseason. I think he would make a solid back up. Fo rizzle.
