Wow, kind of tells you just how tough things are right now! Per Rotoworld: The Arena Football League is reportedly ready to announce they are suspending operations for the 2009 season. There have been various reports, but they have been confirmed by Kansas City Brigade director of communications Pete Likens. The players union agreed to the deal Tuesday, and owners will have a final vote Wednesday. "It’s pretty much a done deal to suspend the 2009 season and work toward a single entity-league," Likens said. "We plan to start up again in 2010." Dec. 10 - 11:51 am et
Yeah, I expect many barely tenable sports and franchises to start shutting down. Here in Houston, the Comets WNBA team has already disbanded. I expect more of this stuff to come.
Not as long as they keep making video games. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FGI7R0u3TQ]YouTube - WNBA Live 2008[/ame]
I wasn't a big fan of the arena league, although I did work for a afl2 team for several years. I was the timekeeper and stood at halffield leaning on the wall. I did get to meet Wade Phillips one game, and during my 4 years of working gamedays, I did get to meet a lot of ex-NFL players. I also got the chance to meet Clayton Holmes. He was playing for the Topeka, Ks team for $200 a game. Does his name ring a bell? It should, he was a 3rd rd. draft choice in 1993 for the Jimmy Johnson's Dallas Cowboys and won a Super Bowl ring and playing in 15 games for the Cowboys that year. When Jimmy came to Miami, he signed Clayton, but later cut him after he returned from a suspension. I meet him after the game and he was a nice guy, but drugs cost him his NFL career.
