1. Keep him on a pitch count in practice and in games, he'll be fine. Whenever he was healthy with the Texans, he was a bell cow (mega contract). He can't do that anymore.
2. Miami thinks their sports science and health management system is bullet proof so this makes sense on that basis.
3. They've got a three-man position now. That's not a bad thing.
4. As I've been saying for a while, Foster is a well-defined player. Gase (or any coach) will know what he's good at and what plays to call while he's in the game. That's a good thing.
5. His scheme specificity complements the specialties of Ajayi and Drake. Allows you options in game-planning, or in adjusting during game (ride the hot hand).
6. He's always been and will always be as valid on 3rd down as 1st & 2nd. Gase doesn't want to sub RBs during a drive. It limits your pace options too much.
7. Not a bad thing to have an Arian Foster showing the ropes to young guys who look up to him like Jay Ajayi and Kenyan Drake. There's too much ageism among fans. Vets have value.the 23rd, Pandarilla, dolphin25 and 6 others like this. -
Let's be honest here, when he's healthy Arian Foster is one of the best RBs in the league. His legs are simply made of glass.
Low risk. Extremely high upside. -
Could be a Chris Johnson type deal like last year

They say takes 9 months to heal. We are in the 9th month, and I believe so is Cam. Are we better off at RB now than 24 hrs ago? I think so. If Foster wins the starting job I don't think anyone here would be upset. Because Ajayi will play a big role and to me, it is who finishes.

They really didn't have a proven, every down back to supplement Ajayi. Foster is the only real choice at this point. It makes perfect sense.
- Daniel Thomas is not an answer - he's a liability at best.
- Williams is also not an every down back and has demonstrated very little thus far.
- Drake is also unproven as a regular backup to Ajayi. Not just that he's a rookie; he is very thin hipped, not a power guy but more of a 3rd down back, KR until he proves otherwise.
With Foster, you get a player who can run between the tackles as well as outside. You get a known quantity. You get a veteran who can lead the RB room, you get a player who can spell Ajayi regularly (as I noted in the other thread - he should be able to handle 8-12 touches a game) and you get a player who can actually start should injury take its toll - and not be overwhelmed by the game. This was a no-brainer for Miami. They do need to limit him early though.Tin Indian and SICK like this. -
How is this bad? He's 29, its literally 400k contract with possibility of 1.1mm being off the books if we cut him before week 1. He's a veteran presence in a young RB room, excels in pass protection which helps Tannehill, excels at catching out of the backfield which helps Tannehill, and gives us a very much needed solid #2 behind Ajayi.
He stays healthy, or even gives us 12 games, this is a great deal.Tin Indian and dolfan7171 like this. -
let's have some patience, camp starts in a week and a half. Miami made a move to add depth/a potential starter if he's healthy. We are better off at RB now, than 24 hrs ago. Nothing matters if the OL is atrocious or ravaged with injuries. If they are healthy, we all knew RB would be a position that would settle out after camp. Let that play out. There could be a camp star. Gase showcases the back, and maybe one of these young pups will seize it. OR, an established back like Foster has a Chris Johnson type season like last year

It should also be noted that Arian Foster is now the best pass blocking RB on our roster.
My guess is that Jay Ajayi will handle most of the 1st down carries, and Arian Foster will handle most of the 3rd down passing down duties.
After all, Arian Foster just said: "Adam knows how to use a running back out of the backfield, which is my best quality, route-running, catching the ball out of the backfield"
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/spor...-positions-some-perspective-and-thoughts.html
Which implies that around the time of contract signing, Arian Foster & Adam Gase came to an understanding that given his age, his pass catching, and his pass blocking, it makes sense for him to handle much of the passing down duties. -
Very good signing. Mitigates a rb catastrophe if ajayi gets hurt. Now we only need one more lb depth signing for a perfect offseason on paper.
-
I agree with all of this.
I think this was a great signing that makes alot of sense. And it is very inexpensive to boot. Sure with his recent injuries he is not an every down kind
of guy anymore, at least not for an extended period of time, but if you needed him to be the guy for a game or two I'm sure he can get it done.
This is a very good singing.LI phinfan likes this. -
Why would that be a surprise? Ajayi was a 5th round pick and we are relying on him to be the man? We knew going in RB was thin

Great point. He wants a complete back. It is a gamble but we need to start fast

If Arian Foster is taking snaps away from Ajayi, then I'm OK with it. At this point, I trust this staff explicitly to make the right decision, until they start a history of making the wrong one.
If Arian Foster winds up being the guy most of the time this year and that means Ajayi is a question mark heading into next offseason, then we draft/sign/trade for someone. I'm not worried about that. That's next year's problem.
Would I love Jay Ajayi to go off, show that he can be great and when he gets his carries, earns the majority? Like you, absolutely. If it doesn't happen, then I don't think it's bad or the end of the world. It may mean we thought more of him than he really was.Agua and LI phinfan like this. -

I would rather the future be here now, then have to rely on an known injury bug player. If Foster comes in and is a stud I am cool with that, but I don't want to not have the answer for the next year. i would prefer there be one less hole to fill. However, if you are putting all your faith in a known injury then you going to get burnt. Kinda like them thinking the guards were going to be ok last year.

We'll be lucky if he averages 30 yards a game. Waste of a roster spot, this guy.
-
Really? Kind of shocked how down on Foster everyone is. Sure he's not a world beater anymore but he's a vet who should be stable. He's one season removed from 1200 yards, and last season with injury was the first time he's averaged under 4 ypc.
Since we let Miller go in happy we got him. I'd take him over a lot of players in the league knowing he has maybe 2-3 decent years left.

Let's let Arian shake the rust, huh?
His first game action in nearly a full year.
We have no RB depth.
You really want DANIEL ****ING THOMAS on this roster over him?
