New technique using nano and microtechnology

Today, medications like chemotherapy and radiation used to treat cancer do not target cancer cells alone, but destroy all cells - whether they are healthy or sick. The result is that patients can suffer anything from exhaustion and anemia, to nausea, vomiting and hair loss. There is also considerable damage to the patient's immune system, making them susceptible to many additional illnesses.

Margalit's technology allows cancer medications to be placed inside tiny bubbles, which are so minute that millions can fit in an inch measurement. The surface of the bubbles contains an agent that allows them to distinguish which cells are cancerous and which healthy. When the bubbles "recognize" a cancer cell, they deliver the medication they?re carrying directly to that cell.

I sent this article to a coworker at my work. You see, I work at a cyclotron facility that specializes in proton therapy for tumors. Anyways she is a biophysicist. This was her response I thought you would find it interesting.

This is a variation on a theme. Everyone in oncology (the chemical branch of cancer therapy) is trying to figure out how to deliver therapy directly to cancer cells. Every one of these methods depend upon recognizing a cancer cell as being different from a healthy cell. The problem is that step one in cancer cell transformation is to become successfully disguised as a normal cell. Until that happens, a tumor cannot take hold. So finding something unique on a cancer cell that can be used to target tumors is pretty much impossible.
And yet NIH spends hundreds of millions of dollars a year funding this type of research…
