Looks like he's not returning to the school either after this year according to Saban. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/bowls08/news/story?id=3798417
Works for me, gives us a chance to get a look at Mike Johnson at Left Tackle. He looked pretty good at left guard in the games I have been able to catch.
Thats the problem, he probably didn't. I wonder where this guy will go? I can't see him being a legit top 10 guy.
I was thinking the same thing. Someone will reach out and snag him. He could slip into the early 20's quite easily really. I wonder if he will do an all star game?
I'd take Andre Smith to play RT at pick 24. Absolutely I would. I wouldn't pick him to play LT at 2, but 22 slots later on the opposite side? For sure I would. Would Miami? Given the work Mike Maser did with Jake Long's feet from draft day to week 1, then I think they might. I'd say he's have to lose some weight and really work on firing off the ball quicker.
24 is abouts where we picked Carey IIRC. IMO, the trade-off of Carey as a rookie vs Smith as a rookie is pretty steep in Smith's favor. That said, aside from Pennington, Carey is our most veteran presence in the starting line-up at a whopping 5 seasons of experience. Could replacing him with Smith (assuming of course he doesn't get re-signed) have too negative of effect on the line, and can Smith ever be as good as Carey is now? I would personally say yes to both, and I have a high opinion of Carey.
I dunno. Not saying there won't be teams happy to see him fall in their laps and gladly draft him as a right tackle but I don't know if I would. For starters, getting suspended before a Bowl game - likely because he wined and dined with agents instead of ... uhm ... preparing for the Bowl game - would be a huge red flag for me. It certainly depends on the exact details of the suspension, but I'm big on character and work ethic in a first round pick and I suspect Ireland is too. In addition, I don't see a determined, working his butt of kind of guy on the tape. I see a talented kid but I can't shed the impression that he thinks he's better than he actually is. So, in a way, the suspension doesn't surprise me. It kinda fits what I see on the tape. Which begs the question: Would I pick him with a first round selection? No, I probably would not.
Personally I'd rather have Garrett Reynolds or William Beatty - they can be had much later and could do the job at RT just fine IMO. Not much money and the risk reward is just right in my eyes.
Oh I agree there's red flags and issues that we've all talked about. But in terms of pure talent, you'd be hard pressed not to look at him pretty hard were he not there at 24.
Take it for what it's worth but I got an email that said Smith's Uncle was receiving money from agents Kirk Wood and Archie Lamb who are Bama boosters as well. Email also said that Terrence Cody might be involved.
