    This part:

...is consistent with my belief that motivation is provided by leadership among the players, and the coaches' main job is to put the players in position to win by doing the work they do behind the scenes.

If I were coach Philbin I would start viewing Mike Pouncey, Reggie Bush, Jake Long, and Randy Starks as the cornerstones of the team culture I'm trying to develop, and get those guys locked up long-term.

Players can say anything they want to about Philbin, good or bad. It all eventually comes down to wins and losses and right now the Dolphins have yet to win a game under Philbin. It is still way to early to judge Philbin as a HC in the NFL. I think we will all know more about Philbin and the coaching staff after this season is over.

The key thing here is that the players like and respect the coach. You can have a talented team but if they dont respect the coach then they are not going all in.

I get Crowder's point but there's no player on the roster that carries the kind of weight in south Florida that Dan did.

Plus, everything has a context. Philbin is coming in as a first-year head coach trying to develop a team culture, and he's pointing these things out to players as a way to get them to pay attention to detail.

You can contrast that with a head coach who's been with the same team for a while (Shula), talking to a player who needs no instruction in that regard (Marino). It's entirely possible that Philbin would adjust his approach accordingly in that situation. It's not like the guy's an idiot.

What I want to know is how Crowder would know how Marino would react. He never played with Marino.
