Tomorrow night LSU will play Ohio State for the National Title, which as a Dolphins fan is interesting, but what is more on the plate is: What should "us" fans be looking for out of the top prospects in that game? Glenn Dorsey, Vern Gholston, James Laurentitas, Early Doucet All future NFL types, but what would make one of them more likely to be Drafted #1 overall by us this April? Glenn Dorsey splitting double teams with a swim move? Vern Gholston making plays in coverage? Either of those players beating a future NFL lineman? As a "joe average" fan, what would make one of those players really stand out?
I say let the audition begin! The display of talent is going to be great. I want to see Dorsey at 100%. I hope he rises to the occasion and solidifies his frontrunner status as our obvious choice in the draft. He probably has the most to lose or gain in this game.
Im intrigued by the "Merriman" comments about Gohlston (SP?) He does look like a beast doesnt he. Although Dorsey can basically toss guys aside and stuff a run like nobodys business. I just would like both of them to get through the game healthy...and then they can become wealthy and wise!!!
Yep, this game is worth MILLIONS of dollars for Dorsey . . . and Gholston for that matter. College athletes don't get paid . . . well tommorow night, their play will effect what they are paid . . . so its like they are getting paid.
The one thing I noticed about Dorsey on highlight reels is his ability to come off of blocks, I'll be looking for that to happen. And is there a CB involved in this game Jenkins is it?
Don't forget about the safety for LSU, he always seems to make plays . . . I think his name is Steltz? Jenkins will be able to showcase his #1 CB potential as well.
Yea Dorsey really is a talented DT, I'm hearing he is fully recovered from the injury . . . and this maybe his toughest challenge of the year as OSU has HUGE Linemen up front. Jenkins is the #1 CB prospect right now (if he declares, which he probably will) . . . he is a top 10 projected pick.
After watching Dorsey and Chris Long both play their bowl games i have to give the edge to Long by a sizable margin. Dorsey made a couple plays but Long was dominant. Vernon Golsten didn't have nearly as good of a game as he had last year against Florida.
I agree I was very impressed with Chris Long. Dorsey was good tonight, but he just looks "fat" to me. Chris Long looks lean & fit, and might work better in the heat & humidity of South Fla.
hes a defensive tackle lol you ever seen ted washington or grady jackson? If not, your in for a helluva belly.... but yeah i dont know if the heat will bother him or not, hope not .
what do you guys think about Chevis Jackson? the corner from LSU (number 21 i believe). He had a hell of a game guarding robiskie. He is a all SEC 1st team defender i believe. Also, doucet impressed me.
Gholston impressed me up until they dropped him into coverage for whatever weird reason. He's only a trade down option, though. If we stay at one, I'd be happiest with Glenn Dorsey. I still think Gholston can become a better player, especially in the 3-4. Hopefully we can move down 3-4 spots, grab a 2nd rounder, and land him. If not, then I'd be perfectly fine with having another Tim Bowens. (obviously more athletic and more potential)
Hilarious, Glenn Dorsey makes plays and is solid against double teams from Ohio St. while Long beats up on Texas Tech and Long is automatically better...
I know, but he was applying pressure on Flynn the entire 1st Q before they dropped him into coverage. I know that he can cover for a LB, but you stick with what works, IMO. I love the kid's game & potential though. I think he can be spectacular.
Tim bowens not David Bowens He is referring to our better than average DT years gone by... Hey does Dorsey have his all his toes...?
Dorsey was dominant against the run. It's not so much about making plays, it's about eating up blockers and doing your job so well, you allow others to make plays around you.
I thought he looked good rushing the passer. However, when LSU ran the ball at him he was just pushed way off the line and that is why I think they dropped him to more of a LB position. The LSU oline was destroying him on running plays. Since LSU had the lead, they were able to mix up the run and pass well, so he could not really tee off on pass plays.
Chris Wells I haven't followed college much this year but that Chris Wells looked pretty good. Man he stiffarmed that DB into next week!
for you guys saying Dorsey was just ok... what game were you watching? I saw him constantly pushing his guy back and slowing Wells down. I saw him eat up blockers so Jackson,Favorite, and Jean-Francois could get pressure, and I saw him hustling last night. Also remember this, Dorsey went up against double teams from an OL with a couple ligit NFL prospects, Long did not go up against legit NFL prospects against Texas Tech
Dorsey played very well. Not a spectacular stats night, but his play allowd the whole D to click, freeing up other people to make the plays. Would not at ALL be unhappy with him at the first spot. Gholston I think is looking to go around the 3-5 range perhaps. Dorsey will be 1-2 I think. If we dont take him I bet St Louis will. Long had a good game too, but as has been said, Dorsey played a game against a far superior team. I dont think we can go wrong with either guy, and if we stay at 1 I think currently its a race between them, unless some people start posting some outrageous combine #s while Dorsey/Long do poorly. Also, watch out for OSU LB Laurentaitis, guy had a big game as well and could be a dark horse, especially if we trade down a few spots. ATM, if the draft was tomorrow the pick would be Dorsey assuming his health all checks out. Looked fine to me though
he would not get past St. Louis(who needs DT help since they want Carriker at DE and Glover has been horrible)
well there is zero chance WE are taking those guys.. why should they throw away all that value for what they can still get by staying put
Boomer...do you think there's any realistic shot at a trade down this year or should we just take Dorsey/Long and count our blessings with the player we get?
Mate, I don't see who people would be wanting to deal up for. I think sometimes you look at players and you think, 'you know what, there's 2 brilliant defensive players at the top of this draft, high character, hard working, great players. I'm just going to take the great player'. This, IMO is the year.
Agreed, just dont see us being offered a chance (fair and reasonable) to trade down out of the 1st overall (other rounds i.e. 3rd round, yes perhaps). That said, agree, while I think Dorsey, Long, and Gholston can be put in a hat mixed up and you will pull out a winner everytime to improve this Defense for years to come, I lean toward Dorsey. We have Samsom Satele as our center and anchor of the O-Line to build upon, and Dorsey would be the DT/NT (center of our DL) to build upon. I like Dorsey for this reason. However, I still hold that FA will shape our draft and depending on our signings and losses there, will direct our draft and its picks more than anything else.
Well like everyone else I know we need a lot of picks to fix the team so I'm greedy! I guess the fortunate side for us is we have a number one pick and two guys that I really think are "can't miss" players in our sights.
