No, you can't. The Atari 2600 was responsible for destroying the industry in the mid-80's.

The Wii didn't resurrect the already thriving industry.

Ooooooo, I like it. That may very well be true, but that does not make it the best. Who knows, had the NES not been there, maybe the Sega Master System would have been held in the same regard as the NES is.

Absolutely RIDICULOUS!! Oh my god, are you kidding me?

    1. REVOLUTIONARY d-pad controllers
    2. What's wrong with carts?
    3. The biggest game size/memory of it's time
    4. The best graphics ever before seen
    5. If you didn't blow on your games like an idiot, the hardware worked fine
    6. Did you want it to play Betamax tapes or something?

The Master System was the red-headed stepchild of the NES. It was technically superior, but just didn't have the library.

    How is it ridiculous?

They've obviously improved on all those things, so my arguments apparently aren't ridiculous.

I never said it wasn't the "red-headed stepchild" of the NES. Just that if the NES wasn't there, the Master System wold have been right there with many of the same features that the NES had.

The Atari 2600 brought gaming to the masses in their homes and yes their open standards towards games did hurt them but I would credit the fall of the Arcades as just a big of a reason to why there was a major gaming crash (it wasn't the 2600's fault alone).

Plus the Wii hasn't resurrected the video game industry but it sure has revolutionized it. The Wii has shown that graphics doesn't win the war but gameplay and being innovative does, which I tip my hat to them for. The Wii will shape games and the systems that play them for years to come why else do you think Sony and Microsoft want to rip off the WiiMote so bad?

I agree Stitches it isn't the best console but I have to disagree on some of your points.

    2. Cartridges - well that's all there were at the time and what else could they have put them on, BetaMax like TrueDolFan said.

    3. Limited game size/memory - once again goes back to the tech of the time...what could you expect.

    4. Not very good graphics - once again tech plus we all know Nintendo doesn't care about graphics.

    5. Hardware reliability - once again tech plus I know people that still have an NES that works which is more than most Xbox 360 owners can say. :wink2:

    6. Limited Functionality - are you serious? this was the 1980s we can't compare it to today.

Plain and simple your expecting too much from the system...you gotta look at it for its time not now as well. Still its not the best system.

True but the 360 has a $279 version and it sells nowhere near the Wii. Plus all I ever see is 360 commercials so as far as marketing to the masses the 360 does way more of that than anyone. Media buzz I agree wholeheartedly.

I'm not disagreeing just pointing out that I think the being innovative has put the Wii in the position its in.

If you go by software sales, the 360 is still the run away hit

Especially in terms of 3rd party software sales.

Not for nothing, but one of 360s biggest selling points, xbox live, brings the price of the console up to the cost of a PS3 after 2 years. Why more people who tried defending the price of the ps3 didn't bring that up I'll not know.

And I think I see more Wii commercials than 360. Scratch that, i see about the same for all 3. I love the ps3 one where the music asks for everyone's attention.

And yes there is a $279 version, but that is not typically the console people think of when looking into buying a console (people think of the premium). Again that is because of marketing (at least in my eyes).

Back to talking about xbox live and psn, for how the wii sells its price point and the stuff about making it a "friend/party system." Well you're limited to 4 players in most instances on the Wii at $30 a pop for a controller (not counting batteries, and they might even be $40 I can't recall), you can get LIVE for a year for barely much more and be able to play with much more people anytime.

I agree with that in principal because most Wii owners don't have much too chose from but first party titles. However most are content with WiiFit and the like and so the consoles keep being sold.

However I would say that for this generation the Wii is the runaway hit because of Nintendo's rise from the ashes. Although the 360 has surprised, everyone talks about the Wii whereas gamers know about the 360. Plus the 360 got an early start on the software sales by releasing a year early, so they owe that advantage largely too that (but if the PS3 had of had a PS2 like showing so far that wouldn't even matter but no one expects the Wii to outsell the 360 or even the PS3 software wise).

I never see Wii commercials all I ever see is 360 commercials telling me to come and play with my friends on Live. :001_rolleyes:

    I can't even remember a Wii commercial.

Those damn guys in their smart car come to a random person's house and holding a controller asking: "Can wii play?" Or something like that.

I'll confess it. I'm a bit of a video game nerd. Heck, in my back room I have a number of old systems hooked up - Atari 2600, NES, Genesis (with CD and 32x), Super Nintendo, N64, Dreamcast, Gamecube, and PS2. I've got a 3 DO, Sega Master System, X-Box, PS1 and even a Saturn that I haven't yet hooked up in my closet. I've got the newer systems in the living room - a Wii and a 360, but every so often I like to go back there to pull out vintage game and play it. My plan is to eventually move, and then wire them all up so that they are playable at any time. I'm going to need a lot of switches.

As far as which system is the best, well that's an entirely different question than which one is my favorite. My current favorites are the 360 and the Wii, just because they have the games that I play the most often, but I'll admit I'm partial to my Dreamcast, particularly the original Soul Caliber. I like the ability to stream video onto my X-Box, and I like the interactive nature of the Wii, including the menu design. As to which console is the Best of all Time, that's a bit more difficult question to answer. The NES immediately comes to mind, because it was the console of the 80s, my childhood. The N64 and original PlayStation ushered in 3D graphics, so there's an argument to be made there. The X-Box and PlayStation 2 took graphics and gameplay into the 21st century. Arguments can be made for all. If I'm picking my favorite, I guess it would have to be my 360 for right now, and as far as the Best, I'd go with the NES for creating the gaming industry.

I don't think I've seen a 360 commercial in a year or so. Likewise for PS3, though just a few months ago. I see Wii commercials all the time.
