It'd be good for the conference, but geographically I don't think it'd make much sense. It'd certainly make it difficult for fans to get there (compared to the typical Big Ten commute).
You guys leave the Big 12 alone ... The rumor I heard was either Pitt or Missouri was considering joining the Big 10, at least according to sports radio up here.
Makes zero sense. What's Texas' motivation to even consider this? Geographic? Nope Loss of cherished and long standing rivalries? Nope Less talented opponents?..... well maybe that.
God I hope so. Pittsburgh would become a doormat in that conference; Mizzou, not so sure. This would make college football so much better.
Makes a lot more sense on further review for Texas. The TV money alone is substantially (I was surprised) more in Big Ten than Big 12. Here is a really good blog that goes through all of the reasons why it makes sense and answers a lot of the objections: http://frankthetank.wordpress.com/ Really fascinating stuff. As a UT fan, I think we have to consider the move. Makes too much sense.
It might be a thing where Texas only joins the Big Ten in football? Like ND is not in a conference in Football, but they are for Basketball iirc.
Thats a scenario that is really out of the box akin to Alabama joining the Pac 10. I just dont see it happening because of the longstanding rivalries Texas have in the Big 12. Those rivalries generate a lot of hidden income for the teams involved as well as the communities where the games are played.
I would just say on the rivalry point, Texas only has 2 traditional rivals in the Big 12, Texas A&M and Oklahoma. While A&M was part of the SWC, the Oklahoma rivalry existed for 70 plus years while the 2 teams were in different conferences. Apparently, when the SWC exploded, Texas was willing to move on without A&M before the Big 12 was created. There are reasons why this won't happen, and rivalry issues may be a part of the reason, but I doubt it will be a major reason.
First of all, if the switch happens, they will play all sports in that conference. Meaning baseball is done for the big ten, at least for a lot of years. Second, those two rivalries would still be played, Texas would make sure of it, and those two games would be played somewhere in their season every year. I'm sure that they have that stamped if something would ever happen. Texas will never give those rivalry games up.
Lots and lots of talk still going on from the sounds of it here.......... BUT, it'll never happen. Too many hidden revenues, and a major contributor to the revenues is TV monies. Truth is, the revenues generated from closer traditionally played games is just too high for Texas to take away. Lots want to see Texas play OSU (Oklahoma State) as they do A&M and Tech.
The problem with that is that the lowliest team in the Big 10 makes around $22 million in TV money last year while UT maxed out in the Big 12 at around $12 million. So if this deal does happen it will be because of the TV money. I don't really understand the hidden money issue, but I feel confident that the majority of UT fans would trade OSU (Oklahoma State) for OSU (Ohio State). And I feel very confident in saying that the Ohio State game would create more revenue for UT than the Oklahoma State game. I think the main reason that this would not happen, assuming that Big 10 even offered the deal, would be the Texas legislature wanting to protect in-state schools (See Bob Bullock requiring that Baylor be added to Big 12). Who knows, but it is awful interesting.
Ok, I am fixated on this issue for obvious reasons, but I thought I would share this article: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/badgers/84822917.html and
