Billy the Kid...Could Pat Garrett REALLY kill his best friend?

I've always wondered about this. I know I couldn't kill my best friend (no matter what). And there are many theories surrounding the death of Billy the Kid. There are a lot of people that vouch for "Brushy Bill" claiming he WAS Billy the Kid. What do you all think?

Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett knew each other and worked together before Garrett became sheriff, but I would not call them best friends. Billy was buried next to Tom O'Folliard and Charlie Bowdre. There is a giant headstone with each of their names, and the word "Pals" inscribed across the top. They were probably the Kid's best friends.
