They've been saying this for two years. It's nothing new. All Microsoft is doing is keeping its options open in the event of HD-DVD losing the format war. Microsoft would clearly prefer to see HD-DVD win, but it does them no good to spend years saying "Blu-Ray sucks, we won't support it" if it turns out that HD-DVD tanks and loses.
Microsoft is just bracing for the inevitable. Supporters of HD-DVD are droping like flys. HD-dvd lost Warner Bros. a few days ago.
HD-DVD is on it's last legs. Not only did Warner bail but Paramount has an "out" in it's contract with HD-DVD/Toshiba if Warner went to Blu-Ray exclusively.
For once I'm glad I waited to buy either one. I'm usually the boob who buys crap as soon as it comes out.
which is why M$ was smart to not include an hd-dvd drive built in to the 360....and why it was so risky on sony's part. looks like it will pay off for sony, but M$ doesn't really lose anything
I'm sure they'll look pretty smart in a couple of years when Blu-ray wins, gets cheaper and begins to become the standard. MS may also regret going cheap with the DVDs. They could always make a new console I suppose. How much longer are good games going to fit on a DVD, even with compression? Not to mention not all 360s even have hard drives to uncompress the info onto. How many pissed off customers will there be if the best 360 games start being released as HDD only? I'm no techno whiz by a long shot but it just seems like 360 will be forced to incorporate a blu-ray drive at some point in the future. HD-DVD is about to lose b/c MS was too cheap to make the drive standard in 360s. Imagine if every 360 owner, what are there 15 million or so now, had an HD-DVD player? I think things would be considerably different. It makes me happy though, I love Blu-ray.
im glad i didn't get the HD-DVD add on for the 360, id probably get a Bluray addon though since it appears that will be the future of the high def dvd market
I don't really regret my HD-DVD add-on. Just means I can still play Transformers in HD for a while and my PS3 becomes the new movie entertainment hub on the TV/projector.
