The regime will find a way to keep the Lex, cause we dont know what ricky is gonna do at the end of the year..Thats it, thats as deep as it goes right now..There isnt gonna be any messing with this team and its mindset..Ronnie and ricky are entrenched for the year. They do somethin nice for lex come game time, special teams, short yardage...Take polites job..
Because you could get better value. Whatever you get for Ricky wouldn't nearly match what he is worth to this team. When you hear about guys who are leaders on the offense, Ricky is one of the guys that seems to be always mentioned. Ronnie on the other hand could fetch a decent bounty on the trade market. Not necessarily the value we would want, but certainly a lot better than Ricky.
Getting slower? I realize he's not exactly the age that you want from your running back on the roster but Ricky's looked good this pre-season. He's showed wiggle and power. I've been impressed by him.
Look as great as lex has looked and i want to keep him around, hes also been going against 2nd and 3rd teamers while Ricky has looked fairly impressive going against 1st teamers.
I dunno, at the end of the day I feel much more comfortable knowing that Ricky is there to pick up the slack if something happens to Ronnie. I'd personally not want to give that up on a running back thats only got a few preseason games under his belt. If we can keep them both, great, but if not keep the vet. It's bonus points that Ricky can produce in small doses just as well as Ronnie. Being able to step in and have the defense treat you just as much of a threat as they do the starter says something. I doubt we'd get the same intimidation out of either of the other two.
I like Lex for the simple fact our current FB isnt a very good blocker either, and is less of a runner even in short down situations most likely.
Good point. The way they attack is different. Polite turtles along gaining a yard. Lex hits the hole already at mock speed looking to knock somebody over
Telling you Ron. I watched and re-watched the game yesterday. Threw me back to just being a tyke.... Very much the same style and result. Not ever a threat to break a 70 yarder, but always a threat, on any given play to break 15-20 yarder. Give the kid 5 yards to pick up steam and even big linebackers are cringing from the contact that is inevitable.
With the way Hilliard has been playing I don't know that I wouldn't rather lose a 32 year old Ricky and keep the much younger Hilliard. However I would want Hilliard to look good against first team defenses first, but if this team is looking toward the future losing a young RB for a RB that might not have but 2-3 years left makes senses. I'd like Ricky to stay but losing Hilliard could hurt worse then losing Ricky in the long run.
Ronnies value to this team is very high relative to any other offensive players are to theirs...iam mind boggled by your stance on this subject, and how little you value the talents of ronnie brown and how they fit in with our system.
i 2nd that, this is a ridiculous notion, a notion to create conversation for his radio show all based on some things we've seen from Lex...BS talk radio, it did its job, some for which have fallen for it.
were not gonna lose either of them this year, we'll hold onto lex for insurance in case ricky decides to walk away after the season.its that simple. You dont mess with the chemistry of this team at this stage of the game...
Ricky traded or cut? I'd hate to see it, but it wouldn't surprise me. You know what they say NFL stands for...
That's great if possible and I'm all for it. I'm just saying if Hilliard could play against first team defenses the way he does against third then I would take him based off age. However Ricky is proven whereas Hilliard isn't, but either way keeping both is ideal. My only worry is if the team would keep 4 RBs or if Hilliard is on the PS he could be lost that way. Hopefully both hang around.
For speculation, Bokamper isn't even close to the top tier of analysts that I would listen to. An aside: I actually met him in person at my golf course. Kinda dry personality.
I like both players. Well I really like Ricky but I think most everyone here does. I don't think Lex has the speed that Ricky has. That alone would make our wildcat weaker. Ricky streaking off that jet screen with the speed and power he has is very valuable. Lex might be 7 years younger, but he'll never be as talented as Ricky IMO. Lets keep Ricky and milk his talent and low contract as long as we can. I really think we can get 2 maaaaaybe 3 good years out of Ricky with the split carries he's getting. I hope we keep both.
I mentioned it in earlier posts before the preseason games, we have the strongest running game in the NFL & suggested then that we carry Hilliard as an extra RB or use him as a FB. SpecialTeams will be the denominator. He had two nice tackles against the Jacks. the other way is to use Jason Taylor as the LongSnapper, creating an extra spot on the roster of a run first offense. No coach in his right mind would consider breaking up the top running Tandem in the NFL. there are other ways to keep Hilliard, without destroying the foundation of your offense.
Ricky's not exactly a backup though. He plays A LOT for a backup to a probowler. It's also not that high for someone of his talent.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him get some reps with the first team in the next two games. I can't help but think that the organization is high on this guy after all he was developed in their system.
Ricky & Ronnie run Tandem, Cobbs is backup Hilliard would be a luxury & investment security @ RB however 5'11" @ 240lbs the guy could easily play FullBack & that may very well be the answer if he continues to play @ this level during the preseason. would like to see him run more against first team defenses while we're trying to gage his talent should be noted that our RB's averaged over 5.5 yards per carry running behind the Orca-5 last night
I don't think it's to smart to trade a player that actually provides depth and is part of what makes the team good. You keep those players. Also: The team seems to be looking for a kick return man. Maybe to protect their Wr's. Look for Lex to return some kicks this Thursday. If he does, I see it as the team looking and hoping for a way to keep 4 Rb's.
When we drafted Parmele and Hilliard I watched film (here) on both and something I saw in Hilliard told me he was the one to keep. I think the triumvirate find some way to hang on to Hilliard if he keeps showing up like he has lately. I just have no idea ho, and I do NOT want to get rid of Ricky or Ronnie or Cobbs. I want them ALL!
you may very well get them all, if Hilliard continues running north & south with conviction throughout the preseason. we can carry six in the Stable & may even be prudent to do so with a run-first offense. the Stable: Ronnie & Ricky in Tandem, Cobbs backup & utility, with Hilliard backing up Polite & Cobbs
He is a back up. I don't expect a 50/50 split with him and RB this year. Ideally the split will be about 65/35 between the two. (Last year it was 57/43 with RB coming off of a knee injury). And I expect that Cobbs will take some of his carries too. So yes he is a back up and his contract is quite high for a back up.
they can act like ricky has the swine flu like they did to jason allen and sean smith. Did you guys hear jason allen and sean smith's interviews yesterday? they weren't even remotely sick. sean smith said he sneezed a couple of times. jason allen said he wasn't even sick. i guess sparano just wanted to give vontae davis more playing time for that game. who know's? i hope i'm not getting off the subject, but my point is that if the front office wants to give lex more playing time, they'll make it happen.
Ronnie has always been a TandemBack, in college & has run best in Tandem as a pro. He has never been proven as a featured back & that is why he has contract problems that remain unresolved. Have you taken a good look @ Ricky? When you're getting 40 to 60% of the carries you are not a backup. They have run Tandem & will continue to run Tandem for as long as they are both Miami Dolphins. A 50/50 or 40/60 ratio will emerge, depending on who's hot & who's not. it is what it is My expectation is they both exceed a thousand yards this season. the one thing we know w/o a doubt is that Williams has demonstrated he is capable of carrying a Franchise by himself & Ronnie has not. I assure you, they are a Tandem for as long as they both play for the Dolphins.
apparently, the FrontOffice is not willing to negotiate a contract favorable to Brown until they see how the 2009 season goes lack of confidence? unsure of his true worth? whatever, they aren't even in discussions w/ him over a new contract. if they really valued the guy as an elite RB, a deal would have been struck by now. they obviously don't think he's worth an elite contract & are waiting to see how the up-coming season develops. like I said before, Ronnie is an excellent TandemBack but has never broken into to the elite (top five) RB category & there within lies the onion: they are not in agreement to his real worth to the Franchise. it is what it is
I have heard they started discussions just before August. It is not like this is uncommon to the point of calling this a contract problem. Ronnie Brown's contract situation is pretty business as usual
not for an elite RB who could sign as a FreeAgent @ the end of the year I politely disagree: they obviously have their reservations about Ronnie Brown as the featured/elite back. if they saw him as one of the top five RB's in the NFL, an Elite RB, the contract would have been @ least in its final negotiation by now. his personal history tells the story: he is an elite TandemBack & excellent RB. actions speak louder than words & this FrontOffice knows value when it sees it
RB was best when Cam stopped using him as a tandem back. And last year with RB's reps being controlled particularly early in the season due to him coming off the knee injury, RW only got 43% (actually if you factor in Cobbs, RW was under 40%). I think you're fooling yourself if you think his share will get higher this season. Add in the fact that they've stated they want to Cobbs more carries and I would be surprised if RW even got near 40% this year.
You're jumping to a huge conclusion here. The only reports we have are that in early August (?) the team approached RB about extending him and that they started preliminary discussions. That's it. There's no word that the team is disappointed or waiting or lacks confidence or anything. Any of those theories are just your projections.
