A 1st round pick is just too much to pay for Anquan Boldin with the class of receivers coming out this year. In a class with Michael Crabtree,Jeremy Maclin, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Percy Harvin, Hakeem Nicks, Brian Robiskie,and Kenny Britt and us having a 1st rounder and two 2nd rounders it doesn't make sense to move the 1 for Boldin. That being said, none of the receivers I mentioned are anyway near Boldin's level at this point and if Arizona was willing to drop down to a 2nd, which I feel they will on draft day, I'd go for it.

 

Boldin is frosting not cake mix, he's a finished product and not what we need.

Besides, other then TO one year in Philly, when has a Wr ever led a Team to the Super Bowl? It just doesn't happen.

 

TO didn't lead the Eagles to the Bowl. Donovan did.

 

TO put them over the top though. He provided what the Eagles always lacked.

Donovan had what is by far his best statistical season the year he had TO.

And TO was a monster in the Super Bowl playing that busted ankle/fibula.

 

i would agree with you if we had a top 5 pick, but we have the 25th pick, the majority of the guys you mentioned won't be there at 25, he's better than any WR we can get in this years draft at the 25th pick. case closed!

 

Mcnabb has a laughable stat line in NFC championship games and the Super Bowl, he is very overrated and a product of Andy Reids system in my opinion....

The same system that made AJ Feeley look worthy of a second round pick.

Because, as the OP's article stated, in 2011 when the Fins are projected to be able to make their real run to the Super Bowl, Boldin will be 31 years old. A rookie to be had this year will be ~25 and entering their 3rd year in the league, the magic year for receivers. And anyway, no one said we're going to spend a 1st round pick on a WR.

While Boldin would certainly give us an immediate boost to the WR corp, giving up a first round draft for a 31 year old guy is not something the Trifecta are going to do. If a deal can be worked out for a lower compensation, great, I am up for him joining the team.

But I agree that we are building through the draft, if we were closer in other areas and all we needed to start making a true run was a top WR for a few years, then perhaps. But we are not in that position.

 

WHile I agree with you point, my thought is that I just don't see them going WR in the 1st round, therefore all the guys you mention maybe off the board by the time we pick in the 2nd round.

Hey, if one of those guys are still there and they think that some of the other guys we were considering for that slot still may be around in the 2nd, who knows. Maybe they grab a WR in the first. Perhaps we can move up in the 2nd taking both our 2nds for a higher 2nd round pick or even perhaps a lower 1st round pick like Arizona's spot at 31.

Now it may make sense that we package a trade with Arizona that swaps 1st rounds, perhaps we add a 2nd rounder for Boldin?

 

It was the combo of the 2 not one or the other. And it is clear that we need that #1 WR while we see if Ginn develops into that guy. Would be difficult for a defense to cover both Ginn and Bouldin while also attempting to account for Cam and Bess, the TEs, along with Ronnie or Ricky coming out of the backfield. Some combination of all that.

We know Penny isn't going to be tossing a lot of deep passes. What we need to do is find ways to open up the middle/short routes, taking advantage of Penny's accuracy and speed at WR. Thus also allowing us to keep the defense honest and not stacking the box for what we know will be the main point of attack, the run game.

 

Easy answer

The guy you pick in the 1st round, if done correctly has a ton of upside potential for the long term that Boldin doesn't have, not at his age. If he was 27, sure, go for it, but not at 31.

Just have to put the trust into the guys making the picks. They have a pretty good track record so far.

 

I don't think WR is that big of need. We have Greg Camarillo coming back. And we have young guys like Ginn, Bess and London. I think we're going to have a better year out of them. We don't need to break the bank for a big name WR when we've got young talented guys already here coming into their own.

no. maybe if he agrees to play under his current deal for the first year, but i doubt he would ever agree to that.

Yes, I would definately do that. I think the talent level of the spots we are looking at is relatively even between the 25 and 44th picks of ours. How many guys are we hearing about that we could take at 25 that many people say we could also skip and take at 44? Connor Barwin, Larry English, Clint Sintim, Sean Smith, Darius Butler, Hakeem Nicks, Kenny Britt, Ron Brace etc.
I think that would actually be a rathe lopsided trade for us.

btw, i hate the arguement its going to be 2011 by the time we are expected to compete, so he will be old by them...its ridiculous. we won the division last year and we are better now. we have no clue who will be on or off the roster next year, much less in 2011. by 2011 Ronnie will be over 30, will we have a good running game or a terrible one?

Agreed. Not sure what's so magical about 2011. Besides. everyone knows the world's going to end in 2012, so we're only giving ourselves a one-year window.

 

first off, who says that we are going to be making a title run in 2011? just because that is the blueprint we have now in now way guarantees us of anything.....how many people had arizona making a run this year? how many had the giants the year before?...if we have learned anything it's that a team can win at ANY time....i agree with not mortgaging the future for the present, but don't forget the present while preparing for the future....

also, boldin will be 31 come 2011....why do so many people consider that to be old? last time i checked his game is not dependent on his speed. he has great hands, is tough, and is good with the rac....you very very rarely see him straight beat a man off the line.

if we can get him for a 2nd and maybe a conditional next year i'm all for it. while i do love our young talent we have now, and i'm excited about possibly drafting a wr, there is NO guarantee that a rookie or anyone on our roster will make the leap to the #1 we need.....it seems like a shame that we missed on this guy once before, i'd hate to have it happen again....but i trust parcells and co...

Your argument would be pretty solid if it weren't for the fact you are assuming that every receiver drafted pans out in the NFL. We all know that isn't true. Now factor in the fact that WRs are productive until at least 35 years old and some longer. And where did you pull this 2011 date from? Newsflash: WE MADE THE PLAYOFFS LAST YEAR. Who's to say we couldn't make a superbowl run this year? Just because some talking heads say we can't? I think many projected us to be lucky to win 5 games last year. Add all that up and your argument has more holes than a sponge.

All except the last part. If the FO doesn't think WR is our biggest need, and takes a non-receiver in the first, which is a pretty good possibility, then I can see them thinking Boldin might not be worth a first. But there is just no way in my mind that it makes sense to spend a 1st round pick on a WR when you could trade that pick for a proven commodity.
