The Dolphins first three 2010 draft picks, defensive end Jared Odrick, outside linebacker Koa Misi and offensive guard John Jerry, spent the entire practice with the first units.

Wide receiver Brandon Marshall, acquired by trade in April, drew cheers just for catching a bomb in pitch-and-catch drills.

Then, Marshall twice burned cornerback Sean Smith for the type of catches fans hope are season previews.

On the first, Marshall lost Smith badly with a hard break outside and upfield to whistles from the crowd. On the second, the 6-3 Smith seemed to have position on the 6-4 Marshall down the right sideline.

Marshall grabbed the ball above his head like a fundamentally sound rebounder, then danced backward out of bounds

How good is this for Smith though? Seriously? He's getting his butt taken to the shed and hopefully learning from it so that this doesn't happen (or as often) on game day.

Yeah, there's always the other side of the coin here in training camp. But I'd rather it be this way RIGHT NOW, than the other way (Smith dominating Marshall)

This is good for our young CBs. Facing our collection possession receivers in practice wouldn't have prepared them for the #1s they'll get on gameday, and they'd certainly be exposed in the playoffs. Acquiring Marshall should help both the passing game and our pass defense immensely.

Wouldn't expect anything less from the best WR we had since Irving Fryer by golly.

:knucks: I have a sneaking suspicion that the coaches will give Sean a daily dose of the Marshall treatment to help iron out some of the kinks (not physical enough) in his game. I like the idea, but I'd love to see Vontae get his fair share also, him being our number one corner and all.

One problem here: Marshall is a possession receiver.

Not this again, D. I love reading your opinion man but it seems like you've had this discussion a million times. He's still going to cause hell down the field and after the catch. He'll gain big yardage at times.

Why so? He ran a 4.55 at the combine- dude is not slow, especially for 6-4, 230, and he's at the top of the charts in terms of WR physicality- called "The Beast" for good reason. His overall game demands a double team, and that's what you want from a #1- he is a #1. My guess is that he's faster than Michael Irvin and Jerry Rice were in their primes- were they not true #1's?

No, don't get me wrong, I'm not using the term to denigrate Marshall. I don't use "possession receiver" as a pejorative, though a lot of people will. Marshall's great after the catch, but his yards per reception has lowered every year despite having pretty good yards after catch, which tells me he's caught balls near the LOS and had to fight for yards. That's not how a classical deep threat plays WR.

All I'm saying is, if people expect him to be the same type of receiver as, say, DeSean Jackson, they're in for a rude awakening. DeSean Jackson catches balls 20 yards out and runs halfway down the field into the end zone. There have been games in which Jackson caught 4 passes for 100 yards, or 3 for 75, or 6 for 175.

Brandon Marshall is not that type of receiver. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Edit: If Marshall can catch passes a few yards upfield and then put his toughness/RAC to work, there's no reason why he can't bump his YPC up to the 15 range, which puts him in league with Andre Johnson. As it stands, his YPC is "only" in the same range as Larry Fitzgerald's. I don't have a problem with that.

Well, if folks recall the Brandon Marshall miked up episode on NFLN, he told Orton he was going to slip Ashmougha the way he did Smith because he had him set up for it.

It would be nice if some of the young Wr's, Turner, Wallace, et al learn that move.

It would be twice as nice if the young CBs can learn how he sets them up.

Marshall's says he's going back to the film so he can beat Davis tomorrow.

Man. I can't help but let myself be overly optimistic about this year. Brandon Marshall almost single-handedly made the Broncos competitive. I can't imagine that team without him, or ours with him. This is just...exciting.
