Bryant McKinnie, Miami Dolphins’ focus: Beat out the Baltimore Ravens

To think the player from the Ravens traded for a late round pick might be part of why they don't make the play offs.

This is an interesting little tidbit.

Still, he insists there are no hard feelings toward a team that benched and then ultimately traded him.

The way he explains it, McKinnie wanted to be traded to the Dolphins after his demotion, and the Ravens accommodated his request.

" general manager came to me and said, 'I understand where you want to go. Bare with me for two weeks and we'll try to get this thing done and make it happen,'" McKinnie recalled this week.


There were other teams interested in McKinnie, but he only wanted to go to Miami, the town where he attended college and where he lives in the offseason.

I guess we know what was being discussed the day Philbin and Ireland left Ross’ office with their tales between their legs.

hopefully he signs a cheap contract and sticks around one more year. Yes we can upgrade, but we learned a valuable lesson this year in regards to oline depth and vet leadership.

He gives me a guarantee in writing that he's going to eat and train with cam wake all off season I'd sign him to a two year extension..

I'm not joking, if he wants to stay and play in this league two more seasons put it in writing..and screw that workout bonus sh&$, I want 6 days a week and a strict diet regimen...get his ass down to 325-330, flip his body fat % and were golden son..

Lets go U, wucha got..

I stumbled upon one of those in Maui one day...not an attractive sight..

If by stumbled you mean got a ghillie suit, binoculars and a camera then crawled on your elbows and knees for 100 yards avoided guard dogs the security guards, then yes I believe you "stumbled" across one.

Knowing Ireland, he calculated the Ravens would waive him and McKinnie being a Vet could chose his team and he'd chose us saving the late rd pick.

THAT is Jeff Ireland, add in, he took Martin with a high #2, perhaps Martin's play would have improved in the meantime. Can see him trying to run that by Ross now..and Ross's response was less than pleasant.

Can't blame him really, he did drop big $$ in signing bonuses and the team was struggling mainly due to the OLine

Hell yes. If we can end up with a top 10 starting left tackle for a few more years what's not to like. For a late round pick? Sounds like win/win to me.

Say what you want about we got him later than we should've, or we could've got him for money only, whatever. He's been such a huge change for this team. He's doing for the Dolphins, what he did for the Ravens last year.

And there's no way I resign. He's untrustworthy after signing a contract and depending on.

As great as he was for us, he was as bad for the Ravens at the beginning of this year. He was phenomenal last year for them. He gets paid and slacked.

Let's enjoy the ride and find alternatives in the offseason.

we wouldn't have to search for LT in the offseason had we traded for Monroe. could've found our long term answer at the position by merely giving up day 3 draft picks. Then we wouldn't be in the position we're in now where we'll almost be forced to take a tackle with our 1st pick in the draft.

I don't know DJ. While it would certainly be beneficial for all involved, something tells me your reaching if you think McKinnie is gonna follow the Krakens intake regiment, let alone train with him.
I get the sense he is, who he is now, both proud and appreciative that he can still contribute, yet all too aware he's in the sunset of his career, perfectly content with an offseason training program that has served him well over the years, and will continue to until his playing days are over.

Well Cal, I'm just saying what I would do as a GM, I know your 35, I know your overweight, I also know your not to old to get in the best shape of your career, if you don't have the intelligence to do what is needed to change your ways for that last contract, then I'm not investing into you.. I need you to be better next year than you were this year and when your 35 and 350 lbs, there's only knew way to do it..accept my terms or move on.

He's 350?

Geez, well that casts some light, on an otherwise immense shadow.

Being overweight certainly opens the door to dictate ultimatums, but now its more about luring fourty some pounds of lard ass, back out of retirement.

I don't think Bryant McKinnie is an ideal resigning. If he can be signed as insurance, that'd be great.

He's another guy who is going to hurt your ability to run your run blocking scheme even if he's performing adequately at his specific game. The team keeps making exceptions for those kind of players, and it keeps biting them in the ass, and they've got to be disciplined I think in their acquisitions. No more Richie Incognitos.

After the mess this year on our line.....

I love McKinnie as depth next year....but I dont want any shortcuts here. In my opinion, we are a stud offensive line away from competing for it all, at least from an offense view point.

We have the center. Pouncey is one of the best in the league.

I wanted to sign the guy before the season, if he wants this final contract he's going to have to prove it at 35..I'm not sure he's 350, but I do know that he can be a better Bryant Mckinnie by training and nutrition with that body..and I'm not complaining about his game, he's a good player and has proved it, but he has a chance to be better, and if he's committed to it, I could be committed to him.

Your point is taken, but I'm trying to manage resources, and minimize the holes..if I can get a better moving Bryant Mckinnie, one that drops weight to fit the scheme, I would respect that..I mean the guy really wants to be here, so lets give him some strict terms and see how bad.

Talk to McKinney - if he gets and stays in shape over the summer - he gets a bonus
If he shows up in shape and about 320 at the beginning of camp - he gets a bonus.
If he makes the year end pro-bowl, or all-pro, or both - he gets a BIG bonus.
If he comes to camp out of shape and overweight - his pay drops $????.?? per pound/paycheck.
Then make the same provisions applicable to the next years play, with an increased penalty per pound.

If someone paid me to lose 40-50# I would be more encouraged to do it than looking at the mirror after being the guest of honor at a covered dish supper! Have you ever heard of someone making a pecan pie trifle?

Under those conditions, I would sign McKinney for next year, maybe two!

I think sometimes you have to be careful of these extra large men dropping weight to get their workout bonuses, they may be doing it last minute if you know what I'm saying..it's really about adding some muscle while dropping the weight and doing the correct routine specific to his craft...I wouldn't be suprised if some are just doing cardio and a crash diet to make those bonuses.

If he gets in and stays in shape over the offseason (as in beginning the day after the last game!)

Seriously.. If he were to drop 30-40# and do so in a healthy fashion, as well as working on strength/endurance - he could have a couple of years left playing at a relatively high caliber. Which one of the Matthews lineman played into his late 30's? Just dropping the weight could give him quicker movement, and he already knows what to do when he moves.

Let him know that if he is reaching the goals by the draft, he might have a chance beating out the rookie OL you know we are going to have to draft this year.

Sign a personal performance contract (not a football contract) that if he meets these goals by the beginning of OTA's he will get a previously negotiated contract for the season.
If he does not, it's adios, sayonara, see ya later, don't let the door hit you, Good-bye!
