The value of mistakes by the kicker or kicks away from the returner certainly is something that would be able to give us a better idea of the return games impact.
Returning punts has not been a staple of his game in his career so far ?? He's exciting and the Saints definitely used him for punts in certain situations. I don't see this as a big deal. I'd like to see him return punts, but not at the expense of injury, if in fact, he's going to be a feature back for us...
Yep, like asking PFf why they did not also include holding flags a passrushing DE/OLB draws, they merely said "it is not a good play on the rusher part, it is just a mistake on the Olineman's part" The idea of forced mistakes is foreign to Stat Monkeys, so no matter how many times Ted Ginn caused a kicker to put it out of bounds rather then kick it to them, it just won't be counted..this is fertile ground.
Bush in 92 Returns has 4 PR TD's, Bess in 74 returns has ZERO. Bush has 10 PR's of over 20 yards...Bess has 6, Bush has 5 fumbles, Bess has 6. so....no. This is a waste of talent and further stupidity by our favorite fist pumping meathead.
and lets stop with this "5 yards more per return" nonsense. the difference over their careers is 2 yards per return, trading 1 TD in a season for 2 yards more per return and MORE fumbles doesn't pass the giggle test.
Eh, true, however DBess is usually in the upper echelon of punt return avg, up around 10 ypa, Bush is in the 6's. That and it makes no sense to yoke the key to your passing game to such a dubious bet, he has been in the league for yrs now, you know what you are getting, DB may not be perfect, but the risk/reward curve for Bush as a punt returner makes little sense.
Must have been stupidity when Sean Payton did it? Sure, if we are taking into account their entire career. Here are his numbers by year (yds-TDs) 2006 - 7.7 - 1 2007 - 4.0 - 0 2008 - 13.5 - 3 2009 - 4.8 - 0 2010 - 6.6 - 0 Seems like a guy who had one great season as a PR, and not much more.
if you are gonna say that Bess is "around 10 ypa" then you have to say that Bush is in the 8's. not the 6's. Bess sucks as a returner. There is no chance he can change or impact a game as a punt returner. Bush can. if he contributes to one win this year, it will be worth it.
As this is a passion of mine, I looked into it, Bess as a rook had a good yr on punts, a down yr, then a good yr. 10 ypa on punt returns is the gold standard. That being said, a team is far better served having a designated Returner, they perform far better overall.
He was in the top ten in average last year, which I would consider good. But if we get the 2008 Bush, then I'll take him over Bess. Any of the other ones, no thanks.
Ginn was terrible at PRs because he was afraid of contact and while he had good acceleration and straight line speed (good for KOs) he lacked the lateral speed/agility that is needed. If Gates can display the lateral agility to jink and juke a bit then with his speed he could potentially be a DJack type punt returner. If he doesn't work out though, having Bess back there is an admission of failure at the spot imo - settling for average instead of striving to be better.
I don't believe for a second that Reggie Bush will not be returning punts. It makes sense for Sparano to lie and say Reggie won't return punts, and then use him in certain spots, just like the Saints did. Of course, if they don't ever use him as a punt returner, I'm with Section126 on this one. That would be stupid.
I guess it's just one of those things. Do you prefer a guy that will probably only get you about 6 yards per return, but may break one for a TD, or do you prefer a guy that will get you 10 yards per return, but no TDs. I think anyone that acts like that's an easy question is kind of being a little unreasonable. It's not an easy question at all. I come out on Davone Bess' side but I can see the other side of the coin. One thing though...this front office is giving the job to Bess because he's the #3 WR while Reggie Bush is going to be the featured #1 RB. So to me they're making the right decision for the wrong reasons.
And that was certainly a weakness of ours. However Bush, ironically enough, only averaged 6.6 ypr as a PR last season... Once again, unless Sheets or Gates or one of the other 'camp fodder' guys shows something, this regime has yet again not addressed the KR and PR duties...
Sure in a perfect world. Problem with that idea is that Brandon Banks is the exception, not the rule. The odds an UDFA comes in and does better than a Reggie Bush who has already proven to be an electrifying punt returner are slim to none. Other problem with that is I'm not so sure Reggie Bush is the centerpiece of an offense. I think Sparano might try and force him to be with limited success or failure if he ends up injured early. I have no problem with this if it's just to try out some guys during preseason. But if it continues into the regular season, IMHO, it's a mistake.
Hmm, I suspect one has no idea what one is talking about: http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/player?stat=returning&sort=kickReturnYards there is the list, you tell me, how many are late rd picks or UDFA's? Henne will use him as his safety blankie..bet it. guy has a Td, and a 29 ypa avg that tune may change.
Lol...We haven't played a freakin game yet and some of y'all are *****in about special teams...I watched some ghetto footage of Gates returning punts...I watched Bush returning punts.. Also, In the past I have *****ed about Bess on returns, however last year, I saw him make a concerted effort to immediately TAKE the ball upfield as soon as he secured it, there was a much bigger improvement than his previous years, and the average showed it..I think situational returns for bush is the right way to go, most definitely not on kickoffs for Bush..
