DAVIE— Coach Tony Sparano safely estimates the Miami Dolphins secondary dropped at least two dozen interceptions last season. He's optimistic those figures should drop in 2011 because the cornerbacks and safeties have been clutch bringing in bad passes during training camp. And there's been plenty of bad passes. During Tuesday's practice cornerback Benny Sapp picked off a pass from Chad Henne he would have returned for a touchdown. Cornerbacks Will Allen and Nolan Carroll also brought down interceptions during the 11-on-11 portions of practice…. Backup defensive ends Tony McDaniel and Jared Odrick have spent plenty portions of practices the past three days working with the first-team defense…. OLB Jason Taylor continues to be a disruptive force while working with the starting unit, routinely getting to the quarterbacks.... OT Marc Colombo continues to struggle against quick pass rushers like OLB Cameron Wake. At one point backup Jason Trusnik blew past the 10-year veteran for a would-be sack. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/...-rail-0816-20110816,0,1749548.story?track=rss
Ya gotta love training camp. When it's Dolphins versus Dolphins, the Dolphins are always getting the upper hand. "We can't run the ball" turns into "Our defense looks DYNAMITE against the run!" "We're getting sacked a lot" turns into "Cam Wake is even more ferocious than last year!" "Our quarterbacks throw interceptions like pirate coins at Gasparilla" turns into "Our secondary players are finally holding onto interceptions!"
I'm still disappointed that Donald Thomas didn't work out. Not to mention, turning the clock back, Eddie Blake.
I thought they could have had two INT's on the first two drives against the Falcons, Davis was in position for one that Jones came back on, and on the second Falcon Drive two DB's (not sure who they were) banged into each other and missed one.
This catching of all these interceptions is a two edge sword someone is throwing all theses interceptions, just saying
I remember when Surtain had trouble holding on to INT's at first. Then the next season it was off to the races...
Absolutely. Nothing new. It's always hard to tell what to read into the Dolphins getting the upper hand on the Dolphins. In my experience it usually means both things are significant. For instance, when we got into the Atlanta game, our QBs continued to throw interceptions like pirate coins at Gasparilla (3) but our secondary did also pull down multiple interceptions (2).
I feel the same about Billy Milner and Andrew Greene. They were gonna be the right side equivalent of Webb and Sims. Good times...good times... We gave up on the Wades too soon too. Todd Wade was a solid RT who we let walk and poor old Wade Smith, every Miami fan's whipping boy as a LT is currently the starting left guard for the Texans.
