all too busy pointing fingers and defending accusations of bad play call here, poor tackling there, bad penalty here, almost had a pick there, fire the ST coach, fire the OC... Seems everyone has forgot to mention the offensive and defensive lines. Fundamental football starts up front...
Offensively, from a pass protection and rush offense viewpoint, we had some problems tonight. Henne was running for his life for moments in this game. Early on, when we were trying to run the ball out of our base offense, we couldn't get anything (this was before we went down 14 to 0). Jets didn't have Kris Jenkins nor Calvin Pace. Didn't seem to notice. sure, there were some nice moments in picking up blitzes and such, but overall their d line was better than our o line.
Defensively, I thought Paul Soliai came out and played the best of our d line. Set the tone immediately... but they wore down as the game went along. I will include our pass rush in this group as being mediocre at best. Their O line beat our D line, plain and simple. They were able to run the ball better than us, especially later in the game. Just seems like we got tired there in the fourth quarter and couldn't stop them. Jets O line deserves credit... blech....
Both of these units were keys to us beating the Bills and Vikings. But just as they were keys in those two victories, they were keys to why we lost tonight. John Jerry and Jared Odrick for being rookies, were missed tonight. I suppose the silver lining is that we have two quality players there.

To be fair, how many times did we run in the 2nd half? We ran in the WC, but that's not a good indication of the running game.
We didn't get a sack, but the Jets got nailed on holding penalties because of pressure.USArmyFinFan likes this. -
The lack of pressure on Sanchez was really disappointing. Honestly, the defensive performance tonight reminded me a lot of last seasons defense. We have got to do a better job next week and make Brady uncomfortable.

We lost this game because we decided to be cute and throw consecutive passes at the 2 yard line earlier in the game. Period.

Forget the sacks, was Sanchez hit at all last night? The only time I remember seeing him actually hit the ground was from pressure up the middle by Starks (on what actually was called as offensive holding).

What happened to our exotic schemes, etc? I know we can't do it all the time, but dang, they looked pretty flat.
I have a feeling this won't be the norm, just stinks that it happened against the Jets. -
Not worried. the D has been better the previous 2 games and they will bounce back. I agree the biggest reason for the loss was the complete lack of pressure on Sanchez. Hats off to the Jets O-line they played a solid game, in fact they did the same thing last week against the Pats too.

I'm with ya...but we didn't really see any of that movement at the LOS, or guys showing blitz and dropping back, etc...like we had seen the previous 2 weeks. It looked like Wanny D where we lined up and said "this is what's coming, try to block it"
And to the Jets credit, they did. -
Not to call the Emperor naked, but I don't know that we have any exotic schemes and looks. I certainly didn't see anything exceptionally different tonight than prior weeks, save us getting beat badly one-on-one. If you're not going to pull something out of the hat in a close game against a division rival, then when? Against the Pats? Ravens? Pittsburgh? You gotta do it at some point.DolfanJake likes this.

I don't know, but from the first drive, our defense just seemed off balance. Nolan and the gang were reacting rather than attacking because of Schottenheimer and Keller's first drive. Not to mention the lack of a rush. The Jets set the table in their first drive.
IMHO you have to have a lead to reach into the bag of tricks. Or at the very least, show that you can stop their tight end from going ape**** on you.
Sucks that later in the game, when their defense was off-balance curtesy of Henne and crew, Dan Henning would bail them out of having to cover Marshall/Bess/Hartline/Fasano by calling an end-around to Cobbs or some other stupid ****. -
yeah, only Jake Long seemed to really do his job with the pass-rush last night

think at some point you have to credit the Jets offensive line. I thought coming in that we could attack their LG (Slauson?) and that he was no Alan Faneca. Woody was exemplary against Wake, one on one for most of the game. If they can start off the game doing that, we're facing an uphill battle in getting pressure from our base defense because we're not forcing a double team on Wake.
How many hits did the Jets get on Henne (other than the two sacks)? -
Our OLBs as a group were pretty bad. They didn't set the edge well or rush the passer. Terrible game from them. Dobbins wasn't very good either. He shy'd away from contact in the game a few times allowing easily blocking and big holes.

He missed at least one arm-tackle and completely over-ran Tomlinson on another play. Keep that fool on special teams.

TBH, I think the OL played superb and the DLine did well too. The OL gave Henne plenty of time to throw the ball on a blitz happy team and picked up Rush LB blitzes from all over. Some hiccups by Polite caused Henne to run for his life but not the OL...there is a difference...The DLine overall did well but not stupendous. They had a push here and there and contained large chunks of yards from the run for the most part. Their objective in a 34 is not to rush the QB so I cannot fault them for that.

The objective in the 34 is to get pressure from your OLBs and we didn't do that today. The interior of the DL held it's own, but they managed to take Wake and Misi out of the game and still were able to get their TE in the middle of the field. We have young OLBs and that's sometimes to be expected, but this team, again, came out flat...that set the tone for the entire game. Couple that with a few badly played defensive plays from Allen and Doggins in the middle and again poor STs play and you have the recipe for a defeat that you will look back on in Jan and say, "Geez, I wish we had that one back..." -
His contention was not the OLBs but rather the Defensive line, which I stated are not at fault for the lack of a pass rush...Again, overall the OL and DL did their jobs.
As an aside though, we did switch to a 43 late in the game. -
Too many times our offense was in third and long situations... it's the execution on first and second down that was the problem, when the Jets don't normally blitz. We did good against the Jets blitzes, converting third and long situations... saw the first two games they played, and the Ravens / Pats also did a good job against them, converting third and longs. Think the NFL has figured it out and they will not have the same success they had last year.
On the dline, I include our OLB's in pass rush situations into that group. Sometimes we're playing a 52 defense not a 34. Is the OLB's first responsibility to attack the LOS or drop off? We didn't get off the field in some crucial third and long situations and that was part of the problem. -

Paul, I agree with you to an extent and that is why I mentioned that we were in a 43 and yes 52 alignment at times. The 52 is principally used to stop the run and I imagine they opted for the 43 at times to do the same. Nonetheless, what I was mentioning from a defensive line standpoint was that Starks, Soliai, and TMcDaniel for the most part did a decent job. Out of the three areas on the field I think they deserve more credit than the secondary and LBs rather than a finger point. Overall the defensive is a whole and they played like sh*t in that I agree.
Concerning the 3rd and long, heck no one can argue that we flat out did not get the job done, especially when we needed it most with the Jets defense gassed. I recall a point in the game (after the Braylon TD) where Bart Scott, in reading his lips, says to Rex "you need to do something" ie get us off the field quick...
