Carolina Panthers Welcome Barber, Edleman, Crable and Wheatley

Charlotte Observer--The NFL offseason is in full-swing with trading begining throughout the GM league. The panthers started off quiet....then smashed through the trade doors like Ragan Muai through a sheet of drywall. First the Panthers traded a 6th round pick to the nfc south rival buccaneers for veteran cornerback Ronde Barber. Barber (34) will bring veteran leadership to a young panthers defense, and will be a fantastic locker room influence. He knows the nfc south like the back of his hand....and will look to have a good season and finish his career off strong.

Rumors began swirling around the front offices that new Panthers GM Chris Cullen was burning up the phones and AIM buddy lists finding a trade partner for Jonthan Stewart. Trusting 100% in DeAngelo Williams to get the job done....Cullen shipped J. Stew to the New England patriots....for a 2nd round pick (44th overall) Slot Wide Receiver Julian Edleman, OLB Shawn Crable and Cornerback Terrence Wheatley

Edleman a young up and coming project receiver who played QB in college, will look to benefit from a good run game, and steve smith garnering all the attention on the other side of the field.

Crable, who has been hurt his short time in the nfl....had nothing but a specatcular career for the university of michigan. 4 year letterman, defensive captain, and 2nd team all-american as a senior. At only 25 years old, standing at 6'5 243 pounds Crable is a good young prospect to learn from Ron Meeks and be utilized in the panthers 4-3 defensive scheme as a Weak Side LB

Terrence Wheatley is a interesting player. Drafted in the 2nd round in the 2008 draft out of colorado. With great speed, he will also have a headstart to be the panthers kick returner in the 2010 season.

here is what scouts had to say before he was drafted.

"One of the more unheralded players in college football, Wheatley made professional scouts take notice of his ability as a shutdown cornerback. After sitting out the 2005 season following surgery to repair a broken wrist, Wheatley more than made up for lost time, establishing himself as the premier man-coverage cornerback in an extremely talented conference.

One of the fastest players in college football, Wheatley's sudden burst and running stride has also brought him success as a kickoff returner. His 937 yards on kickoff returns rank fifth on the school's all-time record list and his 506 yards on those returns in 2007 marked the eighth time in Colorado annals that a player amassed more than 500 yards on kickoff returns in a season, and he still has six games in his final campaign to improve those totals."

Panthers GM Chris Cullen Released the following statement

We thank Jonathan Stewart for his time here in Charlotte. He is a hell've a runningback. We are sad to see him go, he is a tremendous person as well. But we had more needs that delved deeper than running back. Deangelo is quite campable of being the #1 back, and in my honest opinion is top 3 in the league. Without a 1st round draft pick, we needed to accumulate not only picks, (2nd round) but players with upside as well.

I feel we did that today. Wheatley is a fantastic cornerback that played in a very elite division of football in college (the big 12) and has great potential at the kick returner spot where we are quite thin.

Shawn Crable is a monster of a human. At michigan he was a fantastic ball player....no doubt we have quite a good set of linebackers and DE's....with beason, peppers, brown, conner etc....this can be a very elite group, and gives ron meeks plenty to work with.

Julian Edleman impressed me with his short time at his position. Going from playing quarterback in college and in less than 1 season performing at an nfl level at the WR position shows great promise in this young man. Get him on the same field as steve smith....and watch some sparks fly.
