The football league "up north" is holding a draft on May 2nd, and this is a thread that will look at various mock drafts and post videos of the prospects and follow process culminating in the live webcast of the draft on May 2.

    A couple of mocks:

    http://www.cfldaily.com/CFL-Draft.html#anchor_43

Keep in mind, my rankings are based not only off of the best players available, but team need as well.

The player’s rank from my pre E-Camp mock draft will be noted in parentheses next to their current rank.

    First Round
    1.Toronto – Joe Eppele, Washington State, OL (1 -)
    2.Saskatchewan – Cory Greenwood, Concordia, LB (3 ↑)
    3.BC – Danny Watkins, Baylor, OL (2 ↓)
    4.Saskatchewan – John Bender, Nevada, OG (6 ↑)
    5.Calgary – Rob Maver, Guelph, K/P (5 -)
    6.Winnipeg – Shomari Williams, Queens, LB / DE (4 ↓)
    7.Montreal – Eddie Steele, Manitoba, DL (13 ↑)

Things stay pretty status quo in the first reason. The only move into the first round is DL Eddie Steele out of Manitoba and I feel like his stock could be even higher by May 2nd, as he had a great performance at the combine. Cory Greenwood moves up to #2 on my ranking because Saskatchewan seems to be a lot higher on him than they are on Shomari Williams, so BC and Saskatchewan will likely swap picks here. Wally Buono could go with a number of picks here as Williams could also be an option, but I think Watkins is the best available choice.

    Second Round
    8.Toronto – Taurean Allen, Wilfrid Laurier, DB (7 ↓)
    9.Edmonton – Chris Rwabukamba, Duke, DB (9 -)
    10.BC – Chima Ihekwoaba, Wilfrid Laurier, DL (11 ↑)
    11.Toronto – Shawn Gore, Bishop’s, WR (31 ↑↑)
    12.Hamilton – Joel Reinders, Waterloo, OL (27 ↑↑)
    13.Calgary – Brian Bulcke, Stanford, DT (10 ↓)
    14.Montreal – Joash Gesse, Montreal, LB (14 -)
    15.Montreal – Cory Watson, Concordia, WR (8 ↓)

Lots of movement in the second round after the evaluations. Taurean Allen fell into the second round because of the performances of those around him while Shawn Gore and Joel Reinders forced their way in with solid showings on the weekend. Taking the biggest tumble of all was Concordia’s Cory Watson. He didn’t have a bad e-camp, but he was outperformed by Shawn Gore and a few other receivers. Watson is out as first receiver taken, but still doesn’t go below the second round.

    Third Round
    16.Calgary – J’Michael Deane, Michigan State, OL (12 ↓)
    17.Toronto – Nasser Jamal, Louisiana-Lafayette, OT (17 -)
    18.BC – Curtis Dublanko, North Dakota, LB (18 -)
    19.Edmonton – Bruno Lapointe, Buffalo, DL (19 -)
    20.Toronto – Akeem Foster, St. FX, WR (15 ↓)
    21.Calgary – Steven Turner, Bishop’s, WR/KR/PR (46 ↑↑)
    22.Edmonton – Bart Archdekin, Minot State, OL (47 ↑↑)
    23.Montreal – Christian Houle, Montreal, DL/LB (20 ↓)

Two huge jumps by Bart Archdekin and Steven Turner from the sixth round into the third. Archdekin is a versatile lineman who was largely unknown by the masses, having played at little known Minot State. His numbers on the weekend impressed enough that I believe he’s now a fringe top-5 OL in this draft. Turner’s hype will jet him all the way from the 46th spot to 21st but I still have many questions about his ability to turn his elite athleticism into a polished product on the football field.
That about sums up the first 3 rounds of my post evaluation mock draft. I’ll be posting the final three rounds later this week. As always, feedback is always welcome on Twitter (@mdpeltz)

3 23 Edmonton v Tor v Sask Justin Glover McMaster OG
3 24 Montreal Kristian Matte Concordia

A couple of things, Jordan Sisco was at the Shrine Bowl, Christian Matte worked out for the Texans as did Justin Glover.

Steven Turner blew up the CFL's version of the Combine known as the ECamp with a record setting 4.31 40 and a 40 inch + vertical leap

    http://www.ridleyscouting.com/

A couple of the upper echelon players are also NFL prospects down the road:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLU3UjKqvU4&feature=fvw"]YouTube- Shomari Williams 2009 Queen's University Highlights[/ame]

Shomari Williams was Phillip Hunt's running mate at Houston, but headed to Canada after graduating from UH and led his CIS team to the Canadian Natl Championship

Another one who is certainly on NFL radar's is Chima Ihekwoaba:

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYqIkgfzH98"]YouTube- Chima Ihekwoaba Defensive End Wilfrid Laurier University[/ame]

A 4.6 40 DE, he is raw but has tons of explosiveness

    Wr Cory Watson:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8rUrpg6q-c&feature=related"]YouTube- Cory Watson | Concordia Stingers 2009[/ame]

    Akeem Foster

Should be fun, and the CFL draft is similar and disimilar to the NFL draft, high picks are valued, but they are not the precious stones they are in the NFL, for example in the CFL a top 8 pick can be used on a player who is still enrolled in the NCAA for another year.

I can see why Turner's stock has jumped upwards since the ECamp:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJiirbC5nyQ"]YouTube- steven turner highlight tape[/ame]

He is of a Joe Smith/Stefan Logan/Ian Smart mold of a smaller, explosive player.

Eddie Steele at a performance center, fairly straightforwards, he hit 33 reps at Ecamp, does 30 reps of 225 in the video:

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQ6dIpK_chA&feature=related"]YouTube- McDolesGym.com- Eddie Steele Path to the Draft Training Day[/ame]

The really interesting aspect is the end of the video, Steele claims the Colts called around about him, this is a CFL thread "but" over the last two yrs the Colts and Dolphins have led the NFL in signing CFL talent, followed quickly by the Jets who raided Grey Cup Champions Montreal.

Not as far as I know SilverP, the CFL draft is for Canadians, and for Canadians who have moved to the US.

If you are thinking of Rusty Smith winding up in the CFL, if he goes undrafted and a CFL team likes him, he could sign as "import" Free Agent, the CFL requires 21 Canadians, and 20 non Canadians on the roster of a team.

Good for him, and what I've noticed about CFL to NFL movers is, the better NFL teams do not mind giving them a shot, or signing them to contracts with Bonuses.

The Colts are particularly aggressive in scouting and signing CFLers, so hopefully Ireland takes that as a challenge and signs Chima Ihekwoaba.

    Updated prospect rankings

    http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/News/2010/04/07/13499416-qmi.html

The problem is, Shomari Williams really doesn't fit what the Argos need, which is basically everything, and of the top 15 players ranked, 6 or 7 are NFL caliber athletes meaning the team that drafts them has to then run the risk of a spending a prime pick on a player who will be on the team two years at the most,

For example both Cory Greenwood and Shomari Williams do carry grades on www.nfldraftscout.com, Taurean Allen is a legit 4.4 Cornerback and Steve Turner alread has garnered NFL interest after running a 4.31 at the ecamp.

The Argos would be wiser to select Bender or Eppelle over Shomari.

Not CFL Draft information per se, but interesting info about a CIS prospect who is rising in the NFL:

    Samual Giguerre:

    http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/profilexnews.php?pyid=81658&draftyear=2008&genpos=WR

4.49 40, 42 inch vertical leap, the Colts were out of options with him as he had used up his practice squad eligibility and he is a great prospect, they Colts and Bill Polian are large players in the Canadian Football scene adding Giguerre, Dudely Guice, CFL DPOY John Chick and are interested in DT Eddie Steele

Cory Greenwood is extremely athletic, Reinders is a surprise and Matte had worked out for the Texans in March.

The money is much better in the NFL.."but" if they are cut they will have a tough time then playing in the CFL this year, the CFL season kicks of in July, those players will be at OTA's and have to stay in the NFL system until September, which means they would not be able to play in the CFL as rooks until 2011.

    May 2:

The CFL draft is growing a bit, last yr I had a thread on it, and basically it consisted of a website that updated the draft picks, and that was about it.

It also will be interesting to see what decisions are made by those Canadian players who have been invited to NFL Rookie MiniCamps, if they receive invites to the full NFL camp and training camp, they will miss the CFL season, if they decline, NFL GM's maybe form the idea that those players are not serious about pursuing a career in the NFL.

To me, it would probably be wiser to play in the CFL for the two seasons, build up some film of how well they can play at a professional level, then shop themselves to NFL teams.

Fun stuff, this is one of the reasons why I like the CFL, those 8 players who have NFL Rook Camp invites more than likely won't be offered NFL contracts, but they might be, so CFL teams have to judge when to draft them and if they do draft them, the likelihood of signing them, or if they don't draft them, who to take in their place.

In the NFL they'd just sign everyone, the CFL doesn't have those sort of resources, they have to be savvier than their NFL counterparts.

Roughriders work a trade for the #1 overall

Shomari apparently has a 3yr contract in place with an option, I'd tend to doubt that as he has NFL aspirations and 4 yrs after 5 in NCAA and CIS football and he would be looking at being 29 or so and trying to make a NFL roster as a "rookie".

    CFL draft roundup:

    http://www.cfl.ca/draft

Now it may seem odd to NFL fans that a kicker would go #5 overall, the deal is in the CFL a team MUST have "X" number of Canadians on the roster, so teams try to find Canadian Kickers who can play which makes the roster more productive.

    And the Top 10:

Outside of maye Maver, are either NFL prospects in 2011 or in NFL training camps already or had offers to come to a NFL training camp, which is quite a testament to how far the Canadian version of the NCAA the CIS has come.
