...still sucks. I didn't watch the game. But I did read that he threw the ball away on 4th down during a crucial drive. But who knows, maybe he'll go on to "tear it up" if Gabbert is out longer as so many Henne fans here prognosticated.
The fourth down throwaway was a smart play. His receivers, namely Justin Blackmon who was the target, couldn't get open on the sprint right option call. Blaine Gabbert's expected to be back next Sunday.
Someday he might get a chance to start some and will probably win a game, then some on the forum will make a thread saying, see! Then the next week he'll suck.
I can't tell if Marcedes Lewis is open but it's the same thing I've seen Peyton do before. I checked and I believe its a two-man read. If neither are open, run if you can. If not, throw away. Same way Bill Walsh taught it.
A Jax offense that lost MJD, leaving them with..? Lewis? Not a bad player, the fact they had to lean on Rook Blackmon speaks volumes.
He's got position on the defender that's behind him. Just needs to gun it in there. It's 4th down..at least try. Sent from my Samsung Epic 4G using Tapatalk.
Let me see: you're at midfield, rolling out to the right on a two-man read, both of which are covered, and are under pressure and up 17-3 toward the end of the half. What are you going to do, throw it up for grabs?
Yea honestly he should. He could get a WR going up and making a play. He could get a pass interference call. And at worst he gets a pick 20 yards down the field and even that's better then turning it over on downs.
What do you not agree with. What is worst case scenario if he throws it up where you wouldnt want him to?
In that situation, with the lead, you throw the ball away. If it was a different situation, I'd agree.
On 4th down, a pick 20 yards down the field is still better than throwing it away. The odds the ball is returned further than the line of scrimmage on a deep pass are not good. Running the ball on 4th and 1 is better than throwing it away. Really hard to defend that play, but I'm glad to see Henne still has his defenders.
Discussing one play makes me a Henne defender because he had nowhere to throw nor run? Ok then, I'm not going to waste my time conversing with you if that's how it's going to be looked at. Throw it to who? There's no one open. By the time Marcedes Lewis comes into the frame, Henne has already gotten rid of the ball due to pressure. His only two reads both ran away from him after running their short and deep outs.
There is a receiver 15-20 yards down the field. Throw the ball up to him. Again, what is the downside? None
I forgot. That's the only guy out on a route. And regardless he could still throw the ball up to that guy even.
Given the position of the defense, I would say they could easily get a pick six on a poorly thrown pass due to pressure. There are black jerseys everywhere.
I don't think I've ever seen a pick six or much of a return from a ball being thrown up down the field. 99% of the time it's the WR going up fighting for the ball with a CB or S and if someone goes down with it, they go down right away.
I watched some of this game when henne was in there. The same ole henne. He stared down his receiver the entire time. Amazing.
And...Henne is moving away from him...do you expect him to plant his right foot and pivot and throw back across the field to try and complete the pass? Only guys I've seen be able to do that were Elway and Favre.
We've seen Henne make those throws. We know he has the arm strength to do it, that was never a question. It was his accuracy and decision making (as seen in the clip) that were a question. When he is at the top of the Raiders logo, he has time to stop and throw the ball.
The chance of a big return on this play is minimal imo - if you get it close enough to the receiver, they will have a chance at the ball and can either tackle or at least slow the defender and likely draw a blocker. Putting a little air on it also allows the rest of your team to get into position to make a defensive play if needed. Instead, you are just surrendering the ball at midfield. You may as well surrender the FG right then too.
Henne ran for the 1st down. It was 4 yards to convert. Barely made it back to the LOS; but a penalty for illegal hands to the face converts. Money.
