Jeff Ireland has come a long way, at least in terms of his transparency. I give him credit for that, not that he needs my approval. But when it's all said and done, I don't think Ocho ****in' Stinko is gonna be the feather is his cap the media is making this signing out to be.

 

I don't see anyone in the media gushing about this move.

 

The very story in the OPs post is painting a picture of a no nonsense Parcells who would have never taken a chance on Ocho, but the new and improved Jeff Ireland would! Gushing, no. Painting it in a positive light and as a more significant signing than it realy is? Yes. IMHO.

 

I get the impression that the story is about Ireland making decisions he never would have with Parcells. Its not saying its a good or important signing just representative of a change in philosophy.

My favorite thing about the Chad Johnson signing is the fact that it is his life dream to be a Miami Dolphin.

Through my years as a fan I have not heard many players keep their childhood allegiances when they make it to the NFL.

I think it is pretty neat.

 

I guarantee you, your junk just got bigger and you became more attractive to women. These are typical side effects of being like me.

 

I don't think Chad is as "colorful" anymore as he used to be. Seems pretty laid back and focused IMO.

The Dolphins have actually featured a fair number of players who grew up Dolphins fans. Chad Johnson's talk about it being a lifelong dream and stuff like that...well, I think that's the kind of thing Chad says that you kind of take with a grain of salt. I doubt it means any more to him than say, Olivier Vernon. And I think it meant more to Benny Sapp, who really did have a lifelong dream to play for the Dolphins...until he got cut unceremoniously after Week 1 for a mistake that was only half his.

 

As a Bengal he during bye weeks he would fly down to Miami to watch Dolphin games and his childhood hero was Mark Duper.

I take more grains of salt with Chad than I do with Olivier because Chad has been a NFL player for over 10 years.

 

I think that is pretty cool as well but if memory serves we don't have a great track record with Dolphin fans turned pro. Wasn't Dante Culpepper and Cam Cameron both childhood fans?

 

I do remember Daunte Culpepper being a fan, however I do not remember Cam Cameron.

 

I dont know that there is a shift in philosophy per se.....

To me it is smart business and smart football.....You have a once great WR, who had a bad season, and not much interest in him....

They got him for the vet minimum, tacked on a few incentives that could boost his pay upwards of 2M (which I am fine with if he meets them)...

They will get some business exposure, because of the name, and what he brings which Ross likes....it is a win-win situation and a smart signing...

and for the record 85 isnt and never has been a bad guy, people hate him for all the wrong reasons....he isnt a punk like the others...

Its somehting that wouldn't have happened while Parcells was here. Same with hiring a WCO coach. Going on Hardknocks. Drafting Tannehill. Drafting Martin. etc. These things show a shift in philosophy.

 

He was born and grew up in Miami. He was 5 when Marino was drafted. So, I'd guess most Miami kids around his age were fans of the that supercharged Air Marino offense.

 

I don't doubt it was his lifelong dream. I recall it being mentioned when since back when he was in the draft. It's been something that has been consistently stated.

 

Yes the philosophy changed more when Ross got there, which was the reason Parcells left, because it didn't mix with his philosophy....Ross is the one behind all the business decisions, and ultimately Hard Knocks.....drafting T-Hill was obvious though, they need a quaterback...before him, Henne was there, I believe they wanted to give Henne a full shot which they did....Martin? Miami is the king of drafting lineman, big or small, fast or slow....that isnt new...again there was a need at the position, a rather large one, just like at WR....the need is glaring and the price was right...

The WC offense coach yes I agree Dizzle....so for that, it says more about the way Ireland wants to go...maybe he sees the light about todays game, doubtful though....

 

I seem to recall him saying something about growing up in SC and routing for the dolphins but I could be wrong. I think Jay Feely was another childhood fan.

 

Parcells didn't have choir boys when with the Giants, he had no problem signing or keeping people with bad reps, as long as they produced!

Parcells never would have signed a 34 yr old flashy WR. Keyshawn was a Parcells prototype WR. They play nowhere near the same even though they are both fiery.

 

Just trade for James Jones and be done with it.

 

I really think its going to depend on which player comes down to Miami. If we get Ochocinco, then its pretty pointless. His confidense is just as depreciated as his speed and skill. If we get Chad Johnson, then we have something. We get somebody that has confidense and as much as I hate the word, bring some swagger to the team. That is what these younger players need, our young QB needs. They need that nobody can touch me mentality. Its one thing to have the skill, but what we really need as a team is belief. That is going to go a long long way.

 

Well he did bring Terry Glenn to the Cowboys at an old age (even after the she comments), but I see what your saying.
