Now we get to analyze this statement frame-by-frame, like the Warren Commission looked at the Zapruder film. I know that Ross' inclination is to retain Philbin regardless; but I think this only serves to underscore how clueless he is, even about simple business evaluation. Philbin is an executive who hires other executives and managers to work under him; HE CHOSE Sherman and Coyle, in addition to other coaches who were inexperienced in their assignments. That should be on him. In fact, in his first executive act he chose the two exact wrong guys. He FAILED as an executive.
Whatever the decision is it should be announced sooner rather than later. Today is the day to announance your intentions and begin shopping for replacements if any are needed. If it is Ireland then nobodys job should be safe under him. Leave that up to the new GM to decide who he wants to work with.
Here's a prediction: Philbin will can Sherman, Ross will can Ireland, and then, instead of throwing money at the best available GM, he will hire someone who is willing to work with Philbin. Cut to 2015: Ross will can Philbin, we've replaced one average GM with another, and the madness continues.
Yes this is my best guess as to what happens. Hopefully the 'mediocre' general manager they hire will end up actually pretty good, by luck if nothing else. This is all an inexact science. I'm generally skeptical of guys that are considered to be the "top" general manager candidates. I would avoid guys like Bill Polian and Scott Pioli like the plague. You could hire a Jim Popp, who is probably considered a crummy GM candidate because he's coming from the CFL...and he could turn out to be an excellent General Manager.
Sad, but funny!! If Ross is on board to keep Philbin, then he needs to find a GM that can work with coach. Rather have that then overspend on a GM that can't work with others.
Here's a prediction: Ross does nothing but stare straight ahead with that stupid f****** buffoon look on his mug.
Between that and keeping Philbin I think you could find a way to drag this franchise back circa 2007 in short order.
Polian would probably get rid of all the computers in the organization and have all the scouts submit hand written reports on the players. This is how out of touch Bill Polian is with all the new methods of scouting.
You really think he is that far behind the 8 ball now? I mean..not saying your wrong, I have no knowledge one way or the other. He just seems like a GM that could come in and work with Philbin.
The team is investing in state-of-the-art water coolers and posturepedic benches for our future #1 picks.
If they were thinking of firing Philbin...should probably do it soon. Mass layoffs today..teams are gonna get the jump on the Phins if they arent careful.
100% It's not like Sherman called a piss poor game this one time and then things changed. The play calling was pretty consistent through ought the season, which tells me Philbin was OK with it. If that's the case I hope he and Sherm learn from it and have a more flexible scheme in place next season. If it's the other thing, that Philbin disagreed and sat silent while Sherm was off the reservation then yeah, I don't think he's cut out for the head job.
Both Philbin and Sherman are responsible for not making some changes when it was obvious that things weren't working in regards to the offense. I can understand their reluctance - this is the offense that GB ran and blah blah blah. The problem is obviously that this isn't GB, and Tannehill is a 2nd year QB, and you can't hang on to players not being able to handle what you want them to handle.
I doubt it. The guy is 71 years old. While at Indy he started handing the reins over to his son Chris, and that was an unmitigated disaster.
This is exactly what I fear will happen. And it will be an extension of the mistake not to fire Ireland in 2011. At some point there has got to be a clean sweep. It won't be fair to either the coach or GM when it happens, but you can't just keep forcing GMs or coaches on your applicant pool or it's going to really limit the talent and quality available.
I'm interested to hear why you want to stay away from Scott Pioli. Isn't his draft record pretty solid in KC? Or at the very least his roster management solid? His choice in HC are repulsive, but if you're bringing a guy to simply develop the roster and evaluate talent, I think he'd be an asset. Again, I'm looking purely at KC's talent, seeing the guys he brought in and just assuming he did most of it.
Geez, I don't know what everyone is making of this, but Changes of “some significance” coming for Dolphins" sounds about the same as, "change is coming for Dolphins". Though he may have wanted to imply otherwise, Armando certainly didn't go out on any limb with this one.
We won't get a GM who is worth a damn if he is forced to retain Philbin. We'll get a puppet (who Philbin and Aponte will control) or a retread looking to get back in the game/wants a pay cheque (who Philbin/Aponte will control). The only way we see significant change is if everyone is fired. Everyone.
I'll keep the folks who do the work behind the scenes. Anyone involved with football operations should get a pink slip.
True story...on his first day on the job, Nick Saban was given the resume's of all the ball staff, maintenance, and lockeroom management staff (ball boys, equipment guys). He looked at the stack of resume's..and said..."fire all of these people..I got my own."
Ross is just waiting for the NFL attorneys to give him legal reason without paying him for next season.(Incognito)
By the way, each hour that passes without Ireland being fired reinforces what many of us have been saying about Ross. Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk
Joe Cimino has been with the team for 20 yrs. So apparently Saban wasn't serious or somehow he survived the purge.
Re: Changes of “some significance” coming for Dolphins Joe used to be a client of mine. Great guy. Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk
That feeling of melancholy you have right now, get used to it. We have the new Factory of Sadness But the Heat is back tomorrow
Re: Changes of “some significance” coming for Dolphins If they are making moves at HC or GM, they need to make them within the next day or two. You'll see teams making hires before next Monday. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
The sources I am seeing on twitter claim that people have already been fired. Granted, that source is me, but still...
