Chargers head coach Norv Turner said there will be changes to the team's special teams units, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
"One of the ways to address it is to get some guys who have done a great job in the past who aren’t featured on the coverage teams," Turner said. "Obviously, I’m talking about guys who are starting players who have been good special teams players in the past. We have some young guys that need to grow up and while they’re getting ready to grow up we need to put some guys in there that have done it so we don’t have the issue."
Acee notes that Chargers safety Eric Weddle and inside linebacker Brandon Siler were volunteering to play special teams after Leon Washington returned a pair of kicks for touchdowns in the Chargers' 27-20 loss.
Siler, a seventh-round pick out of Florida in 2007, totaled 47 special teams tackles for the Chargers in his first three seasons in the NFL, including a team-high 21 as a rookie. Injuries to Shaun Phillips and Stephen Cooper have increased Siler's role on defense, where he's totaled 11 tackles, including a quarterback sack of Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck for a safety on Sunday.
