He discusses two here. It is a very good read. CK makes a great point early in the article that it is hard for those of us who are not on the inside to really know about these possibilities when it comes to selecting a GM candidate. In fact, the guy Armando apparently spoke with for his article recently even states that it is easier to find a qualified head coach than a qualified GM.
I have a couple of concerns with Nick Caserio. One, I do not like the New England Patriots media policies. They are not that different from what Miami currently has, and I think Miami needs to get back to being a media friendly team. Second, as it is with anyone associated with Belichick, I am always concerned about what they will do when they get away from the true mastermind of that organization. Thomas Dimitroff has made his own way in Atlanta, but Scott Pioli could not replicate Belichick's success in Kansas City. Also, every assistant coach that has come from that tree with the exception of Bill O'Brien at this point has not made a good head coach. My big question to Caserio would be does he envision trying to recreate the Patriots, or does he simply want to make his own way?
Did you also know that Duke Tobin and Jeff Ireland are essentially best friends in the scouting circles? Duke is the personnel guy Jeff called and discussed Ryan Tannehill with. I think Duke and Jeff came up together as ball boys with the Bears when Bill Tobin was a personnel executive and Jeff's grandfather was one of their top scouts.
Nick Caserio went to John Carroll University. That's Don Shula's school. Their football Stadium is Don Shula Stadium. There are a ton of John Carroll guys that are currently NFL execs: David Caldwell, Nick Caserio, Tom Telesco, Chris Polian....

I like Caserio the best.
I'm wary of the media policies stuff but I've also seen Caserio's press conferences and he seems pretty explanatory. This is where Ross needs a team president that can set the tone.
Everything I've read about Caserio suggests he's just an extremely unselfish guy, will do whatever is needed, doesn't care about credit, just very serious about his job.Phins_Fan_87, dirtywhiteboy, SICK and 7 others like this. -
As a member of the media I can see how it can be frustrating dealing with the Patriots (I've had to in the past and it's not pleasant). But honestly, if the Dolphins end up going that tight lipped, limited to nothing info and they start winning, who cares about their relationship with the media? Think the Boston media would rather have more answers as opposed to cover a winning team? Nope. And the fans up here don't care. All they want is to keep winning. And that's what I want. Winning Dolphin football. Regardless of whether the GM and coach give up a ton of info or none.

CK if Tobin was the choice what are the odds that Kevin Coyle is kept around due his background with Cincy?

Remember, ultimately the reason Ireland is a bad GM is bad roster management.ASOT likes this. -
I think a Team President is needed regardless. The question is, do they need to hire someone that will serve as the head of the football operations, or do they hire more of an administrative guy for that role? It's very clear to me that Stephen Ross needs someone in Miami at all times that the GM and Head Coach answer to instead of himself.
I posted in the club forum that Brian Xanders is a guy who needs to be seriously considered. I absolutely love the fact that he is developing a proprietary scouting data base that utilizes analytics in addition to traditional scouting methods. He seems to be a fan friendly guy. He played college ball at Florida State. Even though he had the title of GM in Denver, he never really had the personnel power of a GM. -

Me as well... -
Oh, and there's no way Jeff is retained. He will be fired, and there is a decent chance Joe Philbin will be fired as well. -
You know what they call GM's with Ireland's history?

Obviously, we want a winner. But I also really want a coach and front office who are more fan and media friendly. Aside from one year with Clueless Cam, we've had a closed down, everyone else is the enemy team since 2005. I'm sick of it. You can be good and open or good and closed. I think that being shut down like they are gives them no advantage at all, so why not treat the fans and media with some respect and act like human beings.

I believe Irish is a deadman walking.
But I'm also suprised how many believe the GM can cut, draft, and sign FA without any input at all from the coaching staff. -
If you think there is no plan then I'm not sure your in a position to judge if he's doing a good job or not. -

Stephen Ross knows that if he keeps Ireland after this mess, it's going to effect him in the pocket book because ticket sales will go down drastically. He's already taking a hit over tickets as it is, and the flash of the Mike Wallace signing has worn off.
The fact of the matter is, this team will never be a winning organization as long as Jeff is making the personnel decisions and final roster.NolesNPhinsFan likes this. -

I like the idea of targeting Ron Wolf guys that came out of Green Bay like Scot McCloughan, if he can move from the west coast or Will Lewis, who's so far have been in KC for 6 months. These guys have been discussed before. I'm not sure if Philbin or Sherman have any relationships with them but they were guys Mike Holmgren took to Seattle when leaving Green Bay. One of those guys, Reggie McKenzie looks to be doing a good job in his first year as GM in Oakland.

Obviously that approach sacrifices short term success and that doesn't sit we'll with a lot of us. I get that. But that's the plan they are going with and frankly they are the first group to try it since Marino retired and given what I've seen since Marino retired this new approach is worth showing a little patience. -
As much of a failure as Wanny was as a head coach, he and his origanization were first class when it came to dealing with the outside world, and the team was among the most well thought of in the league off the field in many ways, regardless of record. Certainly not the case today. -
Both Croyle and Turner seem to be unable to "coach up" their respective unit. Philbin too loyal? Thoughts? -
