Exactly. And tackle is their biggest need. Everyone knows this. So what happens if KC takes Fisher? What happens if they take Joeckel and trade Albert elsewhere? Miami pretty much would have to trade up from 12 if they want to end up with a quality LT. At which point, Miami would have no leverage in trading up. Albert has to be in play for Miami if they want leverage trading up. The clock is ticking for Miami as much as KC. KC is in play for Albert. Either way, I'm not saying this is a dire situation for Miami. They have leverage right now. But KC could very likely take all that leverage away.
I agree. I just don't agree that waiting for KC to draft will necessarily give Miami new found leverage. Could just as likely take away their leverage.
You're looking at this backwards in regards to leverage. KC is not going to keep Albert if they draft an LT at #1. That's the leverage Miami has on them. We can still draft an LT or run Martin and sign Winston. We have options KC doesn't if they go LT.
And if they don't draft an LT? Also, I don't agree that they necessarily can't keep Albert if they draft an LT. KC keeping Albert and Fisher isn't a worse option for them as Miami having Martin and Eric Winston as their starting tackles this season.
Not sure on this rule, but I know Albert has already been tagged with KC's franchise tag. That means he is going to get $9.8 million. I do know that if you trade for him, you are going to have to do it with a new contract in hand for the man. My question is, can Albert refuse the trade ? Does he have that kind of power ? Can he decide to take the tag instead of the trade ? Does he have that right ? Because if I am Albert, and I have that power, no way I want to go to Miami unless I have some good money guaranteed, like 3 years at $8.75 per or something like that. I would just take the $ 9.8 tag money and then wait it out for FA next year. If I have a great year someone is going to give me $ 9 m next year and I get to decide which team I go to.

How? That means there is one less LT available for Miami to take. If they had no desire to keep him, they would have never tagged him. Teams don't tag players they have no desire in keeping.
Wrong, KC loses all leverage once the select a T at 1. Anyone they choose at 1 that plays tackle would result in Albert being malcontent and a distraction. KC will the be forced to make a move and they at that point will have no choice but to make a deal by the time Miami picks. The longer it goes on from the point the less leverage KC has and the price goes down.
Jake was coming off a season ending injury last year. And then again this year. And jake the entire time was not willing to give a discount despite his injuries.
Yes, it makes more tackles available. But it also takes away leverage from Miami trading up. Right now Miami can tell the Browns "hey we can always just get our LT with a 2nd round pick". And again, I'm not suggesting that Miami isn't in a strong position here. But this is a situation that can turn in anyone's favor as things progress.
Yes it is. If Albert isn't a very good RT, for the money he's gonna get, that's not only a huge waste but it will lower is trade value further. We're talking about the difference a 2nd and 3rd pick, that difference is not worth the negatives that could crop up by playing Albert at RT next year.KC is rebuilding, they need all the resources they can get. They want another pick more than Albert. The prospect of playing Martin at LT and Winston at RT is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Luck, had a horrible LT last year and an excellent RT, and they still made it to the playoffs. There's no reason to think the same couldn't happen here, when Martin should be better and Tannehill is way more mobile than Luck.
This certainly is going to be one of the most interesting drafts in recent years. The last few it's been really dull at the top because it was no doubt who was getting picked and sometimes they even had the top 2 or 3 picks signed before draft day.
"Anyone they choose at 1"...that could be anyone that doesnt play tackle. It also could be someone that could play RT. It could also be a trade down to a team that wants a tackle at 1. If you have to qualify their actions, then that inherently means they have leverage.
It'd be a great oline but you'd be spending over 20mil on two players who play the same position. It's just terrible use of resources. Plus, kc is obviously a bad team that needs players, thus they need picks.
But that's a given. We've pretty much known for weeks KC was taking a LT. They tagged him so they could hopefully get something for him. Sure, they'll keep him if they have to. I'm just saying I'm willing to play a game of chicken with KC and get them to take a 3rd instead of a 2nd. Again, not saying I know I'm right, it's just what I would do.
Well you're ending up having to pay Albert at least as much and give up a 2nd round draft pick at the same time. That is just plain bad GM'ing. You can defend him as much as you want but he blew this.

Wrong, they only have one team in pursuit of Albert. KC has the leverage right now to get the deal done at Miami's asking price. There is nobody knocking on KC's door right now to trade up to #1, so that is off the table. KC will be selecting at 1 and the only pic that makes sense is a tackle. No matter if they take a guy that can play left, play right, or play either it doesn't matter. The selection of a tackle, period, will send Albert off the deep end. Once that happens all of KC's leverage is off the table. The leverage then shifts to Miami as they are the only team in play for KC. Miami can then name their price and KC will accept just to get Albert off their hands. We know it will have to be for a 2nd, but what comes after that works into Miami's favor.

You have to wonder why the Chiefs are looking to dump Albert and draft a LT with the 1st pick in the draft. Almost by definition, he's not that good or there are some problems lurking, including salary demands. I'll be pissed if we trade for Albert and pay him Jake Long money, who by the way could have been retained at no draft pick cost as opposed to Albert. I'd rather move Jon Martin to LT and draft Menelik Watson, and in doing so save a boat load of cash and the draft pick (s).
They are rebuilding. They want a younger LT that will cost them considerably less than Albert's asking price. There's no QB in this draft worth taking #1 overall, so they might as well go LT since there's 2 at the top that are this draft's surest bets. If they were retooling instead of rebuilding, they probably wouldn't be looking to move Albert. Albert was in the top 10 at pass blocking efficiency last year, he is not a bad player. In fact he is better than Long who was 21st.
The reality is the Chiefs bungled in franchising Albert. He signed his tender and forced their hand. I think they are holding out for a 2nd so they can save face with their owner. Imagine those internal discussions if they committed franchise tender money to a tackle and only netted a 3rd in return. I'd offer one of the thirds in a take it or leave deal. At most I'd go with a 2014 2nd. If the Dolphins are bent on a tackle, a trade up to the Raiders spot should be possible.
Reports from whom exactly? Did Ireland ever say he offered the same or more money to Jake, but Jake turned it down? You may feel free to believe if it makes you happy. Far as I'm concerned it was simply being outbid.
I don't think the chiefs wanted to dump Albert. They wanted him to play RT IMO. That's why they franchised him and let Winston walk. He's not willing to move to RT. The chiefs know there are alot of really good LTs going in the draft this year. They know with the #1 pick, they can have anyone they want. IMO Albert threw a monkey wrench into there plans by insisting to only play LT and wanting a new long term contract. Going public and demanding a trade if he's not a LT there only pissed off the org and they are looking to get the best deal they can get. Right now KC doesn't have any tackles, left or right. If I'm Ireland, I offer them our 1st 3rd rounder. After the 1st round has been played out.
I'm not sure they are rebuilding. But I think you answered the big question; KC likely isn't looking to move Albert as strongly as most people believe.
If we trade a 2nd for Albert and sign him to a contract worth more than Jake Long and Duane Brown I will freakin lose it. The trade would be the downfall of our team for so many reasons. Trading a high pick, signing him to a huge *** contract despite injury issues and the fact that he is 29 years old. Unreal. Ireland must be doing everything in his power to save his ***. Look at all the successful teams Steelers, Seahawks, Giants, Packers, Patriots, etc how many have done a similar move? None. Because it is stupider than wipping before you crap.
I think there were a lot of moving parts to the Long situation. I wouldn't doubt the "leadership council" was a factor. They also had the full details on his injury history. Lastly, he's been struggling with the transition to more of a zone blocking scheme. I think the team showed reasonable interest considering what he meant to this team for 5 years but ultimately he was never coming back.
