An NFL source familiar with the dealings between the Jets and Laveranues Coles told The Post yesterday the team is in the process of "tweaking some things in his contract." Asked if that means extending Coles' deal to give him the security he seeks, the source said, "Yes," and added that a new deal is "imminent." -- NY Post

    update
The Jets and Laveranues Coles are expected to finalize a contract by Friday.

The Jets' decision to not meet Pete Kendall's demands last year wound up costing them Kendall and the contract they paid Alan Faneca. They won't let it happen with Coles. Look for it to be an extension through 2011 or 2012.

    UPDATE
The Jets and Laveranues Coles have agreed to a contract extension.

Terms of the deal were not immediately available, but it's believed that Coles had two or three years added to his contract, with some guaranteed money up front. Coles is only 31, but as a smaller player who often plays through injury, we'd watch out for an early decline. A shaky quarterback situation won't help his fantasy value in 2008.

Jets: Coles receives $11 million guaranteed
    The News
The New York Jets have guaranteed the $11 million remaining on the final two years of receiver Laveranues Coles' contract, according to ESPN. Coles had been seeking a contract extension, but guaranteeing the remaining two years is an apparent compromise between the team and the receiver. Coles had been critical of the Jets earlier in the offseason for spending money on players from outside and not taking care of players already on the team.

    Our View
Coles has been a team captain and is one of the most respected leaders in the Jets' locker room. He appeared in 12 games last season, catching 55 passes for 646 yards with six touchdowns.
