First I have ever heard of these critters. BRANFORD - When Sharon Touchton says her life was altered by a collision with a fish, it's hard not to chuckle. But then she rattles off her injuries: bruised spleen, fractured cheekbone, broken collarbone, tongue bitten almost in half, fingers nearly severed. "I was in therapy for about six months," says Touchton, a 51-year-old legal secretary from St. Petersburg. "The medical bills have just been ridiculous." Last year, Touchton was one of nine people injured on the Suwannee River in the freakiest of freak accidents. She collided with a leaping sturgeon -- a prehistoric fish wrapped in bony scales -- while zipping along on a water scooter. http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/state/orl-sturgeon0508apr05,0,7357532.story
Really, Den? It seems like recently, every six months or so, somebody else needs a surgeon after getting whacked with a sturgeon.
Not that I'm aware of. We got alligators. They don't jump out of the water but, I bet they eat caviar from the container..
and you pretty much have to be crazy to go in any vessel under 20 feet in a body of water in FL if its not either a pool or the ocean. and even in the ocean you have to watch out for smaller sharks...but, wacky flying sturgeons, gators, the risk of hurting manatees...too much going on in them waters man.
no i live in jersey, we have pools and an ocean that warms to a delightful 58 degrees by mid august and we have flying guidos instead of sturgeons
i still claim that it couldnt have been an eagle ray..ive seen them scuba diving, those things are the size of trucks...
I've seen 3 jump....one was a LOT bigger than the one that killed the lady and two were much smaller, no more than 2 or 3 feet, tip to tip.
Glad I live here. 58 degree water turns hair gel into cement, making that spiked hair a deadly menace. No thanks, I'll take my chances with the gators and angry sturgeon.
I been in a canoe on the Suwannee when they were jumping. Very impressive to see one fly out of the water next to you
