How is it possible in today's day and age of technical advances, virtual software and planning systems that this stuff would still happen. Its been solved in the past, why would a state of the art brand new stadium make such an error?

Fenway Park was built with that design flaw as well. Except that was about 100 years ago... -
It isn't necessarily a mistake by the architect. Those pillars are necessary, they just decided that they may as well put seats there. The Redskins have the same thing, and those seats are always filled. When tickets are hard to get, some fans would rather sit behind a pillar than watch from home.
