Indianapolis (AP) - The Indianapolis Colts didn't trim down their roster the past week, they took an axe to it. Only eighteen players remain on the Colts roster and four of those players are new additions to the team. New GM GridIronKing34 mentioned that it would be a rebuild in Indianapolis and it's safe to say that they are getting things started quickly.

The Colts are looking to move away from their cover 2 zone scheme and more towards a traditional cover 2 press scheme. Stanford Routt will join Indianapolis in their new press defense style. Routt is a player that struggled in zone in 2011 but it's unsure whether it was Routt's zone struggles or the defensive scheme in Oakland as the entire secondary has troubles with zone coverage. "Routt is a guy who we think can deliver the type of coverage we want. We're moving away from the previous cover 2 scheme and going to be more aggressive in 2012," said Colts GM GridIronKing34. Chris Rucker is the only remaining cornerback on the 2011 team that remains on the current Colts roster. It is said that because Rucker's contribution in his rookie year, he'll be given another shot to make a positive impact on the team. Antoine Bethea and David Caldwell remain on the team as the Colts safeties but it's unsure what roles they will play in the Colts new defense.

Earlier in the week, the team traded for All-Pro linebacker DeMeco Ryans. Ryans, only 28, will provide the defense with leadership as he will be the team's MIKE linebacker in their new defensive scheme. Colts GM GridIronKing34 commented, "DeMeco is a guy that I really like. I believe he is more effective in the 4-3 than he is in the 3-4. I think he'll make a positive impact on this roster no question." Kavell Connor will likely move to the team's WILL linebacker with AJ Edds taking on the SAM linebacker role.

Some offensive firepower was added this week as former Cowboys running back Felix Jones was acquired in a trade for Jerraud Powers. Jones has looked very good in Dallas in his limited role however an injury midseason made him expendable as DeMarco Murray surprised the world with his performance in Dallas. With Donald Brown and Delonte Carter already on the roster, the Colts may have their offensive backfield settled. Also added to the offense was former Jaguars wide receiver Jarett Dillard. Dillard, a former fifth round pick, hauled in 29 passes for 292 yards and a touchdown in his second season. The Colts look for him to make an impact in their 4 or 5 receiver sets.

With the Colts massive purge yesterday, they are now said to be nearly $47 million under the salary cap. Rumors are suggesting that Dwight Freeney may hit the open market in the near future but when we asked GridIronKing34 about the rumor he said, "Absolutely not. Freeney is going to be a big part of this defense and we won't risk losing him." However with 18 players under contract and 13 draft picks, that leaves 22 players to acquire in free agency. The Colts will look to find plenty of bargins in free agency this year.
