I recently installed AVG 8 internet security. afterward my computer started behaving differently. the program updated and asked for a restart. i restarted and then windows (xp) asked me for a password. kind of odd i thought. i changed the settings to stop prompting me for a password.
i go restart my computer to check to see if it works. the dialog box is different this time. instead of the three icons in the small box indicating switch user, shut down and restart...i get a different box but with the options as now drop down options
i restart the computer. it doesnt ask me for a password. when it all loads, all my setting are gone. my desktop is different and minimal. the wallpaper is back to the original picture of the grass and sky. firefox loads as if it was the first time it was ever used, asking me if i want to import my settings from IE.
its like it was sent back to some restore point from god knows when. all my programs remain
is there any way i can get this stuff back? help lol :cry:

did you ever put in a password or did you just change the settings to not ask for one?

i never had a password, just changed it to not ask for one
as windows loads, all the programs that normally loaded at startup before do so now. but pretty much all the personalized setting to xp are gone. i had to turn on the quick launch icons next to the start button, the dumb volume icon is back in the system tray -
if you don't notice any major system damage just reset your settings and create a restore point.
i know it's a PITA but setting changes should be the least of your worries :)
maybe uninstall the program before rebooting and see if those things stop popping up and happening? -

actually, as i look, some programs are missing. my torrent program is gone. some of my games appear gone as well. wtf?

AVG does that, its a VERY invasive program. I know with at least some versions that after you install it it runs a scan and deletes anything it doesn't like, without asking you first.
I would never put it on one of my PC's. Avast is good, free, and none invasive. -
Go to start/programs/accessories/system tools/system restore and check restore my computer to an earlier time and it will take you to a calendar. See if you have an earlier date and restore to before you installed.
Are you sure you downloaded AVG from a good source and that it is actually AVG? There is all sorts of rogue software out there. -
You may be logged in under another account. Log out and then log in as admin or your account. Sounds like you are signed in under a guest account.

I have had no problems with AVG. In fact it is one the least invasive anti-virus programs out there. It shouldn't change any system settings. I have used AVG for about 5 years now and I haven't found it to be problematic in any way.like2god likes this.

Agreed, I've been using AVG for a while now and never had any problems.
Me 'thinks the problem may be from the torrent site, JMO though. You have to be very very careful when downloading things/programs/music/games/etc from the internet, P2P sites are a hacker's heaven. Which site do you use for torrents and which program do you use to download them? -
Anything but Norton's Anti-Virus or any of Symantec's system utility products. You want to talk about invasive? It is a huge resource hog as well. AVG and Avast are great free choices.
If you really want an anti-virus that is very easy on your resources and does a great job,then NOD32 is a great choice. However it will set ya back about $30. -

Very invasive program. I had a buddy who had the exact same thing happen to him as Maynard. He was running torrent and after giving AVG a try they all disappeared. Not just the torrent manager but tons and tons of files that had been downloaded that were NOT infected. -

I am a tech and install AVG for people all the time. Never had a complaint such as this. I am don't saying that some have not run into some problems but it's not and invasive program.
I have no idea whats going on with the torrent programs. Maybe AVG has started blacklisting torrent software. Now if that is the case I would agree that it's time to try Avast. However, until I run into that problem I will continue to use it. -
I am going to do a little research and see what is up here. If AVG is doing this then maybe it is time to start using something else.

Sounds like its a relatively common problem when downloading the software. If you get a clean download though you might be fine. -
i feel ya bro, just went through this about a month ago. i just FINALLY this weekend got my computer back to where i wanted it. i lost all my programs and files however. everything. :(

To the OP, it sounds like you were logged in under a different account than the one you're use to. How many accounts do you have on your computer?
Also, I always recommending backing up your computer. Get an external drive and a program like Acronis True Image. You'll thank yourself when (not if) something happens. -

They better have made SERIOUS upgrades to Norton. Last edition I had was a MAJOR PITA. It would block itself from updates and everything else. I spent the better part of 2 solid weeks going through every possible scenario setting what was blocked and what wasnt..then it would update itself, I had to call Rajib in India, I loaded a fix directly from his computer and ALL that work I did for 2 weeks was gone.... -
Well I can't comment on the stand alone AV or Internet Security programs from Norton. But I've been using 360 for almost two years now and it's a really good program. It will only run scans when you're away from your computer so it doesn't slow you down. It also has its own backup function for certain files or folders.azfinfanmang likes this.

update:
first of all, its good to see im not the only one to have this happen
last night i did a system restore to last week on the day before i installed AVG. everything was back. i downloaded the .exe from the AVG site to make sure that wasnt the problem. so far and after a restart it all looks to be ok
so i would recommend a system restore and a reinstall to anyone with the same problem
someone mentioned this happening to another person after a windows update. as i recall now, it happened after an AVG update that required a restart. but so far everything running exactly as it should. ill give it a couple of days. if it happens again, im using another product

Uninstall Nortons and then install AVG. I bet you see the difference. Norton is a memory hog.

Debian, Ubuntu and Suse for the most part but I do play around with some of the others. I really like the Debian based ones.
