Ok so I am about to embark on a quest to install an SSD on my still viable gaming rig...I have many questions and I figured I would start a thread.
Im fine with nuts and bolts that wont be the problem...the questions I have are in regards to the options for transferring data...I I'm sure wrongly assumed I would install the drive and then put the game software on it and then run my games really fast...easy peasy..
I don't have a windows disc or if i did i cant find it...Im running windows 10 and it runs pretty good I keep it clean and defragged and I know my way around it pretty well..swapping drives is one of the few things I have not done.
any and all help would be greatly appreciated..Id like to get this done before fallout 4 lands.

Windows 10's activation is tied to the system hardware, primarily the motherboard. So your procedure here should be to back up your files from your old hard drive (use an external drive, or a cloud storage service, or whatever) and then use the Windows 10 install utility to create a disk or USB stick from which you'll install Windows 10. During setup, skip the part where it asks for your product key, and Windows should automatically activate when completed. If it doesn't, you can call Microsoft to see if they'll transfer the license or force an activation.
You can also use a program like Speccy to get your Windows 10 product key, then enter it during setup.
The absolute worst case scenario is that you'll have to buy a new Windows 10 license.Zeke0123 likes this. -

Just be sure to plug it in to the SATA 3 port on your motherboard. Consult your manual to find out which one that is. Odds are it's whichever one your hard drive is currently plugged in to.Zeke0123 likes this. -

But you should be aware of what some people consider far too intrusive system monitoring and telemetry. Personally, I have no problem with it, because most of it can be turned off, and I only use Windows for gaming.RGF likes this.
