We had a guy on the team who wore one of these in High School. It may look goofy, but if it works - it works. Who cares what it looks like. Helmet redesign is probably one of the things that everyone is working on to stop the concussion problem.
To me if there is a technology that improves helmets enough to avoid concussions then that is the way to go. Maybe that would avoid the rule change evolution towards protecting the head, because it would no longer be necessary. Technology fix > rule change fix.
Oh man. Good luck getting the players to sign on to this. Yeah, they are concerned about concussions, as well they should be but I'd argue a great deal of them are more concerned with aesthetics (as well they shouldn't be). Mark Kelso looked like such a dweeb with that helmet... And let's talk about the fans. We had a 400 something page thread on this board about the new uniform. Ideally, we shouldn't care what the players look like. But we do. We absolutely do. Maybe it wouldn't look so damn stupid if every player was wearing these, but I don't know. 53 Mark Kelsos running around on a field is not gonna be a pretty site.
And give them more confidence to spear each other and go into head to head collisions? Worse yet perhaps they'd just use them to spear each others knees. The game will always find ways to deliver concussions. Sent from my LG-MS770 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
The league could mandate equipment standards, but the technology simply doesn't exist yet. Most concussions are the result of the brain impacting the inside of the skull. The only way we currently have to minimize that sudden deceleration is to have more soft area that makes the deceleration less sudden. Even those goofy looking helmets have very minimal impact. In short, they don't work. We don't have an effective concussion helmet.
