Hey guys, given the current economy and layoffs I'm considering going back to school to try and find a skill that will provide job security for my future. I'm worried though given my age and for the fact I haven't been in school since my early 20's. Anyways, I'm thinking about going after a degree in medical coding and transcription. Is anyone familiar with this that could give me some advice? Appreciate any help.

Best of luck, you can probably take some classes at VCU since you're in Richmond.

That's what student loans and grants are for. I'm sure there is some sort of grant that you'd qualify for since you have a kid and are married.

My daughter did the Medical coding, she hasn’t had any luck translating it into a job, but she made some mistakes. The jobs are there, but my concern for you would be, that type of job can be out sourced overseas.

I personally stated taking Healthcare Administrator course. You have to manage a hospital from here. Starting pay is pretty good even at low level facilities. They are currently starting around 60-70K a year.

What ever you choose, best of luck brother.

    Go for it Jason.

I waited till I was almost 30 to go to school...actually, I went a couple of years in my early 20's but wasn't serious about it.
One thing for certain, at an "advanced" age, it is easy to realize how important every aspect of School is, and I think that actually helped keep me very motivated
I ended up at the very top of my class and Alpha Beta Cappa Honors Society. No way in hell either of those would've happened while in my youth, it just wasn't important enough. There is Zero doubt it was indeed the correct thing for me to do

It is never ever too late to better yourself, and as Pete mentioned, there always opportunities for Grants and Loans

    Good luck Brother

Go to school man, there are 60 year students where I go to school so you aren't too old.

I am surprise you aren't doing web design or something... You'd be pretty awesome at stuff like that, IMO.

Go back whenever you want and dont worry about your age. Just go back with an end goal in mind and not just going back just because there isn't junk else in the job world right now. If you want medical transcription then do it. I would make sure you want it first by following someone around their day to day tasks or quizzing someone who has been or works in the field.

A few years ago I was considering going back for Physical Therapy after my dad had his stroke and was rehabbing for partial paralysis on his left side. I knew the muscular system well because I had been working out since I was 17 and had experience using all the machines and knew where they would target. I also more about occupational therapy then I thought and how to rehab fine motor skills. In fact I ended up teaching the therapists at the therapy center quite a bit as far as different exercises and how they target different areas. But I realized soon that I only enjoyed doing it because it was my dad. When it was other people I was helping, which is what the therapists eventually asked me to do, I realized that I hated dealing with people who couldnt handle my aggressive nature. The people who sulked I tried my best to help but they were by far the most difficult for me because some of them were just kind of going through the motions and no matter how hard I pushed they just didnt want to work to get better, they just kind of wanted it to happen for them. The ones who were annoyed they were there in the first place like my dad I enjoyed helping because they had a goal in mind. Ultimately I decided against going back at least for now because of financial considerations and the fact that I wasnt sure this was the best avenue for me to go down.
