Interesting article, what's your thoughts? http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2013/4/20/4245566/davone-bess-trade-rumors-dolphins More: Extended draft analysis Extended Dolphins coverage Lots of concussions Bess has been very productive for Miami over his five-year career, hauling in at least 51 catches and 537 yards in those years. Last season, Bess had 61 receptions for 778 yards, his second-best season. If Miami dealt Bess, it could probably get back something in the neighborhood of a mid-round pick. While Bess is a productive player, he's not a game-breaker.
As much as I love Bess, he won't be that hard to replace If we can package him to move up a round, I'd be on board. If we can't, then he's a good #3 or #4 WR
With this solid receiver class, I'd like to get one of these kids on our roster, if we're not serious about Austin at 12 because of the resources we've spent this offseason on the position, then I'd like to target Woods, Swope, or Bailey in the 2nd...Robert Woods is gonna be a steal for someone if he goes in the 2nd.p, been sayin that since the game started.. My whole problem is, is Gibson better than Bess, I'm not sure..I just don't understand that Gibson move with this receiver class and Davone Bess on the roster.. If There is a legitimate plan to get one of those receivers, than I can see us dealing Bess..
I agree with you in regards to the signing of Gibson. I also don't see him as an upgrade to Bess. I think Bess is one of the top slot receivers in the entire NFL. If Gibson was signed because the Dolphins plan to run a lot of four WR sets, the signing makes sense. If he was signed to replace Bess as the teams primary slot receiver, I just don't get it. There were rumors that Philbin and his offensive coaching staff were upset with the fact that Bess was injured last year and missed the last few games of the season. Injuries happen in the NFL and Bess hasn't been a player who has been injured much in his NFL career. I hope the Gibson signing wasn't made because the coaching staff just wants to get rid of Bess. I would have no problem with the Dolphins drafting one of the WR's you mentioned, but it usually takes a rookie WR a few years to develop in the NFL. I think drafting one of these WR's and also keeping Bess on the roster in 2013 would be the best plan for the Dolphins. If the rookie WR looks like he will be ready to play in 2014, the Dolphins could just let Bess leave in free agency or cut Gibson, if he doesn't end up being the receiver they think he will be for the Dolphins.
Bess has never shown us one sign that he is the kind of player being perpetrated by some media folks, I will not believe that story until there is legitimate evidence...Bess is now the hardest worker on the team imo, since Reggie left.. Bess is getting pigeon holed in his game because he doesn't have long speed, but this Guys quicks and lateral agility is at a high level, his catch radius is excellent for his size, and his hands are top notch..I would like to see Gibson up close and compare in camp.. If we do indeed have a Woods, Swope or Bailey targeted, then I can see the reasoning behind trading Bess, he will be a free agent next year, and with Wallace, Hartline, and the new rookie locked up, there is no way we could make him an offer at market price..
He's a pretty high cap hit for a 4th WR, has trade value and he pissed off the front office concerning his injury that the team felt he could play through. With 11 picks I could see Miami still drafting a WR and using Bess as trade bait.
I like Bess a lot, but the writing is on the wall I think. He's about as good an example of the archetype of a savvy underneath slot guy there is, but they want different. Gibson I don't think has anything to do with Bess, I believe he's primarily going to relieve Wallace and Hartline at their positions.
Never trade within a division....of course Mueller & Cam Cameron are too stupid to know that. Bess can be replaced surely, but I think he is still useful to this team, and I think it would be a reward for him to be here when we do get a lot better. He deserves that for putting up with the crap QB's and offense for so long.
Bess is one of those players you don't really appreciate when he is on your team, they go elsewhere and thrive and dolfans usually are like "really"? IMO, he'd be a great fit in Cleveland, as I'd really like a Tavon Austin type as I think Tannehill really doesn't need him to grow as a Qb but a Austin would just add more to the offense. Personally, I'd like to see Thigpen move into Bess's role if we don't take Austin, to me he has the tools.
I'd be okay with Thigpen getting a bigger role, but in regards to your first statement, we said that about both Welker and Camarillo. It held true for only one of them. My guess is Bess is a career #3 WR- occasionally #2 Wr. He's a very mediocre special teams player. Overall, very replaceable
Actually he is a decent STer, for me I'd like to see how he would do in NOLA. As for Thigpen, imo, he simply must: -Do more in the offense -Become more consistent at handling punts He had 1300 yds or so last yr, I feel he is a 2k all purpose yards type player if he does those two things, something I doubt we could expect from DBess
Considering Thigpen as a viable slot WR in the NFL? When did this happen? I thought people wanted legit weapons around RT.
I would trade him in the draft if we have a WR in mind and are ready to get him. I would not want to trade him before the draft and then feel forced to potentially reach for a WR to replace him. But, I'd like to trade Bess. Preferably if we drafted a WR in round 1 at some point (esp. if it were Austin) then I'd def. trade him (maybe as part of a move up in another round).
I don't have an issue with them trading Bess, although I wouldn't be surprised if we don't get much for him, given the market and whatnot but SBNation took what Barry Jackson said in his article and made it sound more likely than it is... All Jackson said is that they are looking at other WRs, particuarly slot guys in this draft and that the draft is deep in that type of WR, and that IF they were to actually draft one of these guys, it could possibly mean that Bess would be trade bait... Well, isn't that special... Kind of like adding 2+2 and coming up with 4....I don't get that this is any kind of rumor, just a deduction/guess from one of the local media guys...
Is Austin off the list? If Bess was traded would Austin be back in the mix? Gibson is ok but I still feel Ireland isn't finished giving Tanny some weapons or we looking at the likes of Swope etc in later round?
Thigpen saw significant snaps in the slot after Bess got hurt last year. With more reps and experience I think he can be productive there. I like him on kickoffs and long punts but he needs to do a MUCH better job fielding the shorter punts.
Tannehill has enough weapons as is. What he needs is more protection. Better OL, better running game.
I agree THill has enough weapons for next season. But what about past that. Keller, Bess and Gibson all FAs. That leaves Mike Wallace and Hartline as his only weapons on roster. Not good.
Oh did he? Esh my fault. I could of swore I seen he signed a 1 year deal. My fault. Point still remains though.
I believe we were top 10 in the league running the ball, but we are basically gambling that Miller can fill in for Bush, my person opinion is Miller probably won't be able to handle a heavy workload, And DTrain is just a mess, can't stay healthy, he'll flash then vanish, miss blocks, kind of disappointing really. I'd kick the tires on Ahmad Bradshaw.
He needs both. I've recently come to realize that the difference between good oline play and average oline play is about .5 seconds in time to throw, which can translate into Tannehill's QB rating going from the 70s to the 90s. On the other hand, Hartline is a weapon, sure. So is a billy club. Neither are necessarily what you need in a shoot out though. I honestly don't see a problem with drafting an Austin at 1 and trading for Albert with a 2. That solves both needs and leaves us with 9 other picks (3 in the 2 & 3) to improve other areas like pass rush.
We were 17th in YPG and 18th in YPC. A lot of that had to do with our lack of a credible passing threat and Bush's penchant for ruining running plays. Blocking wasn't the problem IMO, it was pretty damn good from what I saw. I'm excited about Miller but I share your durability concerns for both he and Thomas. I'd like to see a Stefan Taylor type brought in, Bradshaw is a non starter for me. Always hurt, oft injured, rarely practices, higher cost, no thanks.
You're right on the rushing stuff. Bradshaw, even if he lost a step, is the best blocking running back in the league, this is why I'd like to see him play for us in 2013.
I think you're oversimplifying things quite a bit. It's more than just throwing a .5 second earlier. Poor protection affects every facet of the offense from the QB's mechanics to the OC's play calls. QB's tend to hurry their drops, rush/abandon their progressions, evade pressure that doesn't exist, etc. The OC has to compensate for these things with extra blockers and less receivers in the patters, shorter drops, more run plays, quicker developing routes etc. And what good is paying Mike Wallace 60 million if we're not going to protect the QB long enough for him to use his speed down field? Austin is a giant question mark IMO and I don't think we need to be overly risky and swing for the fences, especially with a 1st round pick. I haven't watched much of Albert but if we don't like Martin at LT then it's either use a 2nd on Albert or trade up for one of the 3 LTs. Ideally, I'd prefer leaving JMart at LT and going after a RT in the draft, trading up into the late 1st if necessary. It won't cost us what'd it cost to move up from 12 nor will it cost us another big $$$ long term contract like Albert would. My dream draft is one where we turn the OL from a question mark into a team strength, on par with our defensive line. That's why I want John Cooper and Menelik Watson in the first. Smaller, faster OL, who can handle the up-tempo stuff. I like Jerry but he's not well suited for a ZBS conditioning will always be an issue, especially for a team like ours that wants to go up tempo. Martin-Cooper-Pouncey-Incognito-Watson, with Jerry, Samuda, Garner and Louis backing up would be friggin awesome IMO. If we can control the LOS, gash people with Miller/Thomas/whoever it will open up everything else we want to do. The deep game with Wallace, the seam game with Keller, Hartline and Bess working 1 on 1 all game long. We'll be able to move the chains, go up tempo, use our depth to wear teams down, allow our defense to play with a lead, take risks, create more TOs, etc.
Almost forgot. From all indications Miller is going to the starting tail back this year so any other RB we have on roster had better be able to play some ST. Hell, Miller was inactive for several games last year because he wasn't getting it done on ST. I don't see Bradshaw coming here to block, chase punts, and bust heads on the kickoff team. But that's just me.
I'm actually not oversimplifying anything. Here: If we had had Albert instead of Long, we'd have been in between WAS and SEA in terms of tackles. And you can clearly see, that Tannehill had very little time to throw and when he has 3 seconds or more he throws in the 90s.
One problem with those stats FinD is pressures come from other areas, and the time to throw may not be correalated to reflect that as it focuses on Tackles.
I love PFF and I hate PFF. They do a great job of mining game tape for out of context and often useless stats. For instance, you can't measure protection by how long the QB holds the ball before throwing. Is it a 1-3-5-7 step drop? Dropback, boot, half roll, play action, screen? Did the QB throw early by design or because of pressure? Did he throw late by design or after evading pressure? Is the QB facing 3-4-5-11 rushers? There are so many variables, you basically have to watch the games and see for yourself. Stopwatches aren't going to help much.
There's more to it than what I posted. https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2012/11/07/signature-stat-snapshot-time-to-throw/ So of course, there's more to it. But, from watching the games, are you going to say our oline gave Tanny plenty of time or not? The data does seem to correlate with what we all saw last year, which was less than stellar pass blocking.
Any one of the team could be traded, INCLUDING Bess. Philbin likes a lot of reliable productive WRs that don't demand the ball X number of times per game. Players that never drop the ball and always move the chains and show up when the game is on the line. That describes Bess more than any other player on the team. Bess is going NO WHERE!!!
Welker was a RFA, he wasn't traded as much as there was a poison pill in the contract which ended with the two owners getting together and agreeing that Kraft and Co. would throw in a 7th as a token of good will. Its not stupid when the other teams words a contract to have the other team guarantee the entire contract should Welker play 'x' games in Florida.
