I don't think so. Mainly because we just doubled up on corner.

If we moved Smith to FS that would be horrible he cant tackle to save his life. as for drafting Joe Haden i dont really want him but having him and Vontae Starting outside would be pretty sick

 

I agree. He would be a great fit here but we already have two young corners and all they need is help over the top

I could see them taking Haden, if he was there, but he wont...he would be BPA most likely and in the NFL nowadays you really need 3 good CBs with all the passing.....I just dont know if they actually would take him though, as FS is a much greater need, than a 3rd CB u know??

 

I don't know really. I mean if you look at the Pats they continually play 3-5 WR sets. SO while its nice having two young CB's I'm not sure of its enough. Losing Nate Jones this off season hurt as He played very well for us last year. Will Allen is coming off a major knee injury and plays a position that requires him to constantly change directions so that's a concern as well.

Sorry for the above rambling. The point I'm trying to make is if the BPA on their board ends up being a CB then I would not be surprised in the least if they pulled the trigger. :knucks:

 

totally agreed, it is starting to turn into that type of league, I think 2 CB's 1 and 2nd downs are going to be a thing of the past in a few years...

 

P. Rob in the 2nd or even later would be a better value. Thanks to incredibly piss poor coaching somebody is going to get a steal.

its true that sean smith' range at FS would be ideal but the guy is not physical enough to play the position imo. i hear you about his hips. he matches up better against taller WR's but gets turned off the line quickly against smaller guys.

thats the rub. as a safety he has the height and the range but he doesnt tackle well and is more of a finesse guy. as a CB he might be too tall and stiff. im all for keeping him where he is at and continuing to develop him there at CB. i'm not sure how much he can change much of that with coaching help or if he will naturally adjust. i know i wouldnt give him the hook at CB just yet.

 

technique might be easier to teach than toughness. you have to give smith time to develop at the position
throwing another hat on his head and moving him now would kill his confidence
i was hoping nate jones would be back so we could try will allen at FS. looks like we see him at the nickel now.

back to topic i doubt we go CB early. i still think we take one sometime.

Come on Rocky, Moving a Qb to WR or a LT to OLB isn't the same thing as moving a Corner to a different defensive back position. Corners have made the transition to FS before with good success.

I'm not saying I'm for it but the analogy just doesn't cut it IMO.

 

I actually have my doubts about Smith (developing into a top notch corner at the pro level). He just looked lost at times last season IMO. And, he definitely doesn't have Davis' passion for contact. Draft Haden (or another top corner) early in the draft? No, I wouldn't think so. But, draft one on day two or three. Yeah, I'd do it (assuming there's one available worth drafting, and assuming you've already filled other needs).

Speaking of moving players from one position to another...what about trying Smith at WR? :confused2:

Thing is corners make that switch all the time with a pretty good success rate.

 

He was a WR before moving to CB. I don't see it though. I think he's got a lot of talent and a lot of room to grow at CB.

I think he's just raw and we knew that coming out. I thought he played pretty well last year despite having a lot on his plate early in his career. He just needs to learn positioning. There were several instances last year where I felt he could have made a big time turnover had he been in position. One of those plays was against New England, if I remember correctly. It's when Sam Aiken caught the pass over him? Might have been Aiken, can't remember for sure. Smith was falling down because he lost his footing but if he was upright, he had a pick IMO. There were other times too where I can recall saying that to myself.

I had him as the top cornerback coming out so I might be more patient with him than others because I like the player. I think he has a lot of upside but I've been wrong before. :)

 

I think you are more apt to get a corner/kick returner like Arenas or Leroy Vann later in the draft and if they develop ....THEN ,,, you evaluate the upside of Smith...until then "we" do not have excess talent on the corner to move a guy that has an upside you determined worthy of pick 42 or whatever as a corner......to safety......JMHO......

 

Well, I agree it's a little unfair to judge him based on one season, his rookie season after being thrust into a starting role to boot.

I really like Arenas also...reminds me much of Asante Samuel or a more talented Corey Webster....very good football instincts and maybe a bit short on long speed (not sure what he clocked...(been very busy business wise this "draft year") but smart instinctive and always around the ball with real solid fundamentals....so yeah ....I like him to.
