Okay, with no Dolphins game on Sunday, I thought I would toss out a fun question for you guys. It is becoming painfully obvious that Cousins is not the guy Minnesota hoped they were signing, and the Vikings are definitely in win-now mode. Cousins' cap number next year ($31 mil) makes it really hard to move on from him. On the other hand, we are flush with cash. Suppose the Vikings offered us an Osweiler like trade to take his salary off of their hands. The trade would be this : Dolphins get - Cousins + 2nd round pick Vikings get - 6th round pick (We do not have a 7th at this time) Would you take it?
No thanks, a move like that only echoes what we've done in the past. It's time to draft a quarterback, and not just any quarterback, but the best quarterback prospect that we can absolutely get whether it's Tua, or Herbert, or whoever they feel is the guy.
I don't think the OP is saying we need to "Start" or even play Cousins I think his point is, since we'll have something like 140 million in cap space which will be difficult to spend in one offseason, would it make sense to just roster Cousins for the year as a backup in exchange for the 2nd round pick? So the hypothetical scenario would be: QB1: Tua QB2: Rosen QB3: Cousins Dolphins now have 3 2nd round picks in 2020 Vikings are free to go and get another QB
Another scenario could be to throw Rosen in the trade and maybe get MIN's 1st rounder Vikings get: Josh Rosen + MIA 5th/6th round pick Dolphins get: Cousins (31M contract) + 1st round pick
That's an expensive 2nd rd pick... are you thinking Cousins could still turn it around, and win the start here?
Its not even worth a first round pick considering we already have a lot of first round picks we have to mold. 5 first rounders in 2 seasons on a team is already a lot of young talent, nevermind that we still have a ton of second and third day picks, some of which will make the roster. We have to use our capspace on proven NFL talent to blend in with our future young stars.
I dont see the Vikes doing it. As bad as Cousins has been, they dont really have options unless they want to roll with Rosen or Fitz. That said, it makes sense to use empty cap space as long as Ross can and will take the hit. It's not my money, and we arent using it elsewhere for the moment.
I don't think the idea of the Dolphins trading some cap space for a pick is a bad one, I just think it's probably unwieldy from a roster standpoint. It'd put you at four quarterbacks under contract for 2020, and it seems like it might potentially be an inopportune time for getting rid of Fitzpatrick(some dead money and they like him as a mentor), or Rosen(you could probably maximize his trade value if you baby-proofed the 2020 offense for your rookie).
What if Dan Marino found Marty McFly and used the Delorean time machine to transport himself to 2019 and said he would play for the future Dolphins but in addition to his $100 billion dollar annual salary, every Dolphins fan would have to sacrifice their first born to the Cylon god... Would you take it?
You all crazy. Rosen is getting better and better. Put some pieces around him and I believe he could be our franchise QB. Of course let’s play out the season and see but if we did take cousins in any fashion he would be my backup to Rosen.
I don't have any kids but, I'd be willing to buy a case of Isotoner Gloves for Dan to bribe the o-line guys with. The Moderators are going to flag this thread for "Excessive Silliness".
After the season ends, Cousins would then have one year left at a fully guaranteed 31 million dollars. The Dolphins are currently estimated to have in the neighborhood of 120 million in cap space, and that number is likely to rise when players are let go. The Vikings, on the other hand, are estimated to be about 3 million in the red going into next offseason, and will have no choice but to cut bait in a few players. So, I think that it would be highly shrewd of the Dolphins brass to see what they can squeeze out of the Vikings (following the season, not now) to take Cousins off their hands, and then just cut him afterwards, like the Browns did with Osweiler. Everyone wins, and then Cousins is able to sign for less money somewhere else and compete for a job.
Correct me if I am wrong, but trading contracts is the exact same as cutting contracts. Meaning Vikings would be on the hook for his contract still?
Not in this case. Instead of the typical signing bonus, Cousins got a fully guaranteed MLB style deal.
I think the team is in the mode of building with talent on their original (i.e., cheap) NFL contracts, and Cousins isn't compatible with that.
He wouldn't. Remember when Cleveland traded for Osweiler and a 2nd, and dumped him after training camp? Basically, the Texans paid the Browns a second round pick to get them out of their mistake.
MLB teams will trade away good players with a huge contract for a fairly weak return at times too, just to be out from under the deal.
Or in my Marlins case as soon as a player proves himself the GM usually says something to the effect of "Lol you want to be paid now? Like...with real money? Lol This guy...."
