“I think it relates more back to fundamentals," coach Joe Philbin said of Smith's growth. "As we watched him play, I thought his fundamentals and his technique, his positioning both pre-snap (and) post-snap, during the course of the route, was probably as good as it’s been. There’s still a couple plays there he’s got to play better, but I thought he played well.”

Camp note on fundamentals by SS24.

" First flash of the day...SS24, has put on some muscle, I would say 8 lbs. and he practiced today completely focused on his technique, and it was impressive for a man that size... He was serious, Hes bigger, he's stronger, and he's quicker..no doubt..Very impressed by his balance during forty yard back pedal drills, the stillness of his head during, the posture, and he was flippin his hips quicker than the smaller cats.

I heard before that great coaches win because of how they stress and teach fundamentals.

    Nice hire Philbs.

SS24 has exceeding my expectations this year. I had high expectations when we drafted him. I still remember his awesome one handed INT his rookie year. I think he might of had 2 of those, maybe one was in pre-season. Then he became some what of a dissapointment but now he is back to form and better than I first imagined him to be.
Looks like Coyle is the difference maker. Its nice to know he wanted him in Cincinatti, and now he has him in Miami!
I had no idea his PFF rankings are as good as they are! That's exciting.
It would be nice to know if a healthy Marshall is the right guy to play opposite of SS24.
Of course I dreamed of our former shut down corner VD along with the current SS24 playing together but we all know VD turned out to be a dissapointment and is no longer on the team. I wish VD would have taken this year more serious and we could have seen how much Coyle could have elevated his game, but oh well!

Just glad we finally started shadowing our opponents best WR with him. No sense in letting the offense dictate the matchup. Drove me crazy seeing Jimmy Wilson lined up opposite Andre Johnson in HOU promptly before giving up a big pass because the safety wasn't smart enough to know that's where they would obviously throw the ball. Smith is a must sign. He's priority #1. You use the franchise tag on him if u have to. If I'm Ireland I'd be doing everything possible to re-sign him ASAP.

The problem I've got with Smith is he's still inconsistent. He's had two awesome weeks back to back, but we'd thought he was breaking out or going to what, in 2010? He gets benched or moved to a psuedo-safety position, then responds, and then the next year comes into camp allegedly like 240-something pounds and has a terrible year.

How can we be sure Sean Smith is playing well because he's found good coaching, scheme, and has developed rather than he's a lazy ******* in a contract year?

he's still inconsistent but showing steady improvement. to me, that's enough to lock him up before he hits the market.

Re-signing him is a no brainer to me. He's the best CB we have. I think this coaching staff will keep him from being a one-year wonder.

Slow down there! Surtain played at a level that Smith is nowhere near!

Steady improvement over what time period? 4-5 games?

    He's had good stretches before.

I'm not completely sold but I do like him and always have.

The problem for me is the 3 touchdowns. Corners playing at the level he's purported to be playing at don't let up 3 touchdowns over a 5 game stretch like this, all of them fully on him in his single coverage. Say what you want about the "perfect throw" to A.J. Green but it was still ultimately poor coverage by Smith. He had no choice but to bite on the inside fake against Andre Roberts but his inability to shorten it and recover quickly is a testament to his size and how difficult it can be for him to break in a situation like that. And then there's the Andre Johnson play, and Andre Johnson or not he played the ball in the air poorly on that one.

He's on pace for allowing 10 touchdowns and there isn't a single cornerback in the NFL that has allowed 10 touchdowns on their direct coverage in the past four years.

The thing that I'm NOT worried about is that he'll get complacent next year and suddenly not work hard again. He's been growing up year by year and I see his maturation as much more akin to a Paul Soliai's, rather than one you see from a guy that has his great year in a contract year then reverts. He has the desire to be the best, be a leader, and he's seen other leaders in action and is now starting to take what he learned from them and try to be them. That's more maturity than it is fakery or money driven.

Joe Philbin said it though, even with him performing "well" over the first four games from a number of standpoints, he still wasn't consistent snap to snap in his technique until the Bengals game. That's been a plague of Smith's since he's been in the league. He's one of those guys that will have multiple snaps a game where you're just scratching your head on what exactly he was doing because you're not talking about normal stuff like just getting faked by a double move or pump fake, or getting too pressed by a player's athleticism and in turn losing the football in the air. He'd do stuff like turn the wrong way or get his feet crossed up.

With his bulk, and the way it can be difficult for him to break quickly, the place where he's most vulnerable is the end zone where recovery time is minimal. So I would just keep an eye on those touchdowns. Like I said no corner in the NFL has allowed 10 on his direct coverage since PFF has been tracking. He's on pace for that now. If he allows 8, 9 or 10 touchdowns this year, I don't know how he can expect to get $10 million a year type money as has been batted around by the press.

Interesting those two have the same agent - I wonder how much something like that can impact a guy's development.

It's something you don't hear about but absolutely I think a good agent can impact a player's development and maturation.

He has definitely taken that next step this year. By no means is he anywhere near the level of a Surtain though. Sean just needs to keep this consistency up for a whole season!
