Edit: League is opened on NFL.com. Go here, search for league ID 152496. Password is theheat. League homepage is here if you need to bookmark it.

    League is full!

Anyone interested? Toying with the idea of making a 12 team keeper league, and I'd like to know how many people would join up. I haven't made anything yet, just gauging interest right now. Potential lineups and scoring:

    1 QB
    2 RB
    2 WR
    1 TE
    1 W/R
    1 PK
    1 DST
    8 BN

That comes out to a 17 round draft, which should be good for a keeper league.

6 points for all TDs, 1 point per reception, 1 point for 25 passing yards, 1 point for 10 rushing yards, -2 points for turnovers (INTs and fumbles), and all field goals are 3 points.

Next season, assuming there's any football, you can keep up to 3 players by surrendering a draft pick one round higher than the round you selected the player in. If you keep a 6th round player, then you surrender a 5th round pick in the 2011 draft; if you keep him again, then you surrender a 4th round pick in the 2012 draft, and on and on. Free agents would have an initial 10th round keeper value.

Anyone care to give this a shot?

I'm definitely interested, I've always wanted to do a keeper league. Is the surrender of draft picks pretty standard for keeping players? What happens if you keep a first rounder, just lose your first rounder?

Yeah, losing a draft pick to keep a player is standard. Just think of it as bargain drafting rather than losing a pick. And yeah, if you keep a 1st rounder, you just lose your first round pick.

Glad you're interested! Nine more slots to go.

Looking like a Yahoo league right now. Most people seem to prefer their setup.

    We're up to four.

Fair enough. I like CBSSports the best. Even ESPN is good. Yahoo, for some reason loads really slow on my computer. Can't figure out why.
But I'll deal if that the site you choose.

I've seen that happen before, and the best explanation I can give is that their Javascript code is both heavy and bad. A possible workaround is to use a modern browser with really good Javascript handling, like the latest Chrome, or Firefox 4 when that comes out. Safari is also very good, if you're on a Mac.

I'm not opposed to ESPN, but I've never used their fantasy football site before, so I don't know what to expect there. Yahoo seems to have caught up in terms of free features, too. CBS... well, I don't like paying, let's put it that way. Though if people want to plunk a few dollars down just to have a prize to work towards at the end of the season, and maybe keep owners involved and honest, I'm not opposed to that.

There are also some things we could do (not will do, but could do) with the order for next year's draft that should keep people active and interested even when they're out of the playoff race. For example, an NBA-style lottery for the non-playoff teams, to ensure that teams don't tank the last month of the season for better draft positioning. Not saying people will tank, just that in case it happens, there's a way to keep things fair.

Once we hit 8 commits, I'll create the league on Yahoo.

Doesn't really matter I guess. I'm good whatever you decide.
What about NFL.com. They've launch a new fantasy site this year, so who knows how good it will be. Might be worth a look.

    Never used NFL.com either.

How's their interface and league options? I can't find any details.

    Five now. :hi5:

Yeah, Yahoo has had keepers for a while, but I think you had to pay for them in the past. This year they've expanded their free lineup, so keepers are possible. I think they've even added divisions to the free side.

Edit: Alright, I managed to dig up NFL.com's fantasy help section through Google. (Their website is almost as labyrinthian as Microsoft's.) Looks just as customizable as ESPN or Yahoo, and it's free.

I don't have a problem setting up the league on NFL.com. Anyone opposed?

Alright, a couple of minor problems with NFL.com.

    1. The flex spot can only be either a WR/RB or WR/TE. There is no option to have one flex spot with all three positions.

    2. There is no Injured Reserve option.

Neither are really a big deal. Just means the flex position becomes WR/RB instead of WR/RB/TE, and if you really want to hang on to an injured player, you'll just have to make room at the bottom of your roster.

Anyone have a problem with those roster changes? If not, NFL.com looks pretty good.

The flex spot is not a big deal, IMO.

Not having an injured reserve slot kinda sucks, but it's not the end of the world.

    Agreed with both points.

Barring any reasonable opposition to NFL.com, I'll create the league there once we get three more confirmed commitments.

Same here, my one other league is In_Flames' league on Yahoo. So I'll be splitting between two sites in this instance. It's not really a big deal, IMO. Click one bookmark, manage one league, click the other bookmark, manage the other league.

If you guys know anyone looking for a serious league, by all means ask them if they're interested. I'd like to get the league filled with 12 teams by the end of the month, and get the draft going on or about Sunday, September 5.

Okay, out of boredom, I went ahead and created the league. Head over to NFL.com's fantasy section, log in with your NFL.com username if you aren't already, click Join A League, and you're off.

    League ID: 152496
    League Password: theheat

We also have a custom URL you can bookmark for quick access. Scoring settings should be visible to everyone, so make sure to give those a look. And keepers for next year are currently set at 4, but I might lower that to 3 for the sake of balance. We have a year to figure that out.

Playoffs are currently set for six teams, weeks 14-16. This might change to four teams, weeks 15-16.

Lastly, the draft is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, September 5, 10 PM Eastern. It's your standard run of the mill snake draft with random ordering. Next year, when we have keepers, we'll probably get rid of the snake ordering and just go straight 1-12 for each round, with teams 1-6 determined by lottery and 7-12 in order of playoff performance.

Go here, type in the league ID and password, and you're set.

I think it'll be pretty balanced, honestly. Yes, it's PPR, but there are an equal number of RB and WR slots, with the flex going either way. WRs are also at a premium: once the elite guys are gone, there's really no one who's a sure thing. Meanwhile, RB is pretty deep this year. TE is also pretty deep. Also worth keeping in mind is the rise of the running back by committee in the NFL, meaning that there are less truly elite RBs than a few years ago. Nothing we can do about that, but it's balanced out by the premium the top WRs carry.

Just to compare, Adrian Peterson would have scored 326.9 points in 2009 under this league's scoring system; Andre Johnson, 267.9; Maurice Jones-Drew, 319.5; and Randy Moss, 221.4. I did those calculations really quickly, so they might not be 100% accurate, but they're close enough.

I think the scoring will be pretty balanced on the whole.
